For context, SALEX is a proposed elevated expressway that connects the Metro Manila Skyway to the Shoreline Expressway and three segment extensions in Quirino Avenue, Buendia Avenue, and the C3-R10 Intersection.

While the project will give motorists more direct access to different corridors in Metro Manila, according to the Philippine News Agency, hundreds of trees were permitted by the DENR to be cut in order to commence road work.

SMC SALEX says the clearing was necessary to build the elevated expressway along the approved alignment. “Several design options were studied, and the current alignment was found to be the most feasible because it meets structural and engineering requirements, while reducing displacement of residents and avoiding wider disruption to public and private infrastructure,” added the company.

Out of the affected trees, 94 were found suitable for earth-balling and relocation. “Earth-balling is being pursued where technically feasible, but not all trees can be relocated using this method,” said the company, citing limited road space, underground utilities, and nearby structures that make extensive excavation required not viable.

Under permit conditions, SMC SALEX is required to provide 50,700 replacement seedlings to be planted in designated sites within Metro Manila, which will be maintained for a mandatory three-year period. The company says it is also coordinating with the DENR and other agencies to identify opportunities to strengthen the greening program.

The company further says that replacement planting is part of a longer-term effort to restore green cover in areas affected by the project, in compliance with the Environmental Compliance Certificate. This includes mitigation measures during construction and urban greening components upon the project’s completion.

Two trims for the Seal 05 are indicated on the EV registry: Essential and Dynamic. You may remember that the current Seal 5 also has two variants in Dynamic and Premium. As we get into the specs, it becomes apparent that the Essential trim is a new entry-level option for those willing to skip out on more creature comforts in favor of more affordable access to the PHEV sedan.

At 4,780mm long, 1,837mm wide, and 1,515mm tall, the Seal 05 is slightly taller than the current model, but otherwise has the same physical footprint. It’s still larger than both the Honda Civic and the Toyota Altis, and just shy of the Toyota Camry’s size.

Total combined system output figures aren’t indicated, but the 1.5-liter engine makes 99hp and 126Nm of torque, while the motor makes 161hp and 210Nm of torque. The 7.42 kWh LFP battery also gives it a pure electric range of 55km. Acceleration from 0 to 100 is 8.8sec, almost a second slower than the current Dynamic Seal 5.

While the Seal 05 Essential and Dynamic trims share the same powertrain, they begin to differ with equipment. First off, while both run 16-inch wheels, the Essential gets simpler steel wheels compared to the more premium aluminum wheels on the Dynamic.

Moving onto the interior equipment, the Essential skips on the front row side airbags and force-limiter seatbelt. And while the Dynamic keeps the leather hardware, presumably from an unrevealed Premium variant, the Essential also skips that. Seats are fabric instead of leather, while the steering wheel gets wrapped in ‘integral skin foam.’

Other creature comforts that the Essential skips include electric folding side mirrors, all-around automatic windows, and NFC keycard entry. The available spec sheet makes no mention of BYD’s DiPilot ADAS suite, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the Essential gets a pared-down version of it with less features, if it doesn’t outright skip it.

Despite the cost-saving feature omissions, the Essential still appears to be a decently equipped option on paper. If BYD does push through with adding it to the lineup to further undercut the compact sedan market, things could get interesting. However, the absence of a range-topping Premium variant with extra power and features would be a loss for customers willing to spend for a more complete pacakge. For now, we’ll have to wait and see how ACMobility rounds out the updated lineup for the PHEV sedan.

The latter car is what you’d call ‘rapid’: it’ll reel off 0-100kph in less than 3.5s. Both are available with either a 10-speed auto or a six-speed manual for “traditionalists.”

We’re told the generously proportioned and equipped cabin can accommodate humans measuring over six feet tall, features leather and “subtle heritage inspired touches,” analog bits, digital bits, and such luxuries like electric windows! Climate control! Satellite navigation!

While it remains broadly true to the original Cobra’s size, it’s actually a bit bigger and heavier, AC Cars telling us it’s now 4,200mm long and weighs around 1,600kg. It’s also… expensive. The nat-asp cars start from £234,000 (around P19,437,530) plus tax, while the supercharged versions kick off from £256,300 (around P21,291,020) plus tax.

Though while production will be “extremely” limited, AC Cars is looking to build more overall. “AC Cars continues to invest in its operations and develop new partnerships,” said boss David Conza. “This will provide the catalyst to take AC Cars from around 100 hand-built cars a year currently up to no more than 1,000 cars across all models in total.”

“However, we will still retain the craftsmanship and exclusivity that our clients respect,” he added. That includes roofs.

Little has been revealed about EMTA’s first vehicle. But what we do know is that it will be a fully electric kei car with boxy styling, measuring about 3,400mm long and 1,480mm wide. The fourth-gen Mazda MX-5 finally gets its own green paint job

Early photos of the kei car show a two-tone paint scheme, black accents on its headlights, bumpers, and side skirts, as well as thin mirrors that might come with rearview cameras. Other features shown include black wheel covers with body-color accents and angular LED headlights similar to the Land Cruiser FJ.

The other vehicles in EMTA’s upcoming lineup seem to include a hatchback, a crossover SUV, and a van—all of which we can presume will be fully electric. With BYD and Chery battling it out to claim the title of China’s biggest car exporter, it will be interesting to see how things play out in the niche car segments.

For the week of June 2 to June 8, 2026, gasoline prices will go down by P4.76 per liter, while diesel prices will decrease by P9.26 per liter. Kerosene will also receive a rollback of P10.86 per liter.

These reductions effectively return gasoline and diesel prices to start-of-May levels. Major fuel rollbacks at the time, especially for diesel, came with ceasefires in the Middle East temporarily halting conflicts. Likewise, the rollbacks this week reflect optimism that a peace deal between the United States and Iran can be achieved soon.

No oil players have released price advisories on their social media pages as of writing. However, as with last week’s hikes, it is expected that companies will directly follow the price adjustments mandated by the DOE.

The rollback was announced by Secretary Sharon Garin during a DOE press conference on June 1. The official claims that the Philippines is steadily approaching prewar pump prices—around P55 per liter for gas and diesel, depending on the gas station’s location.

The xLine variant is a less extreme version of the X5 xDrive50e M-Sport PHEV. It leans more toward comfort than athleticism, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t sporty; it’s still an X5, after all. The xLine retains the same powertrain as the M-Sport: a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 489hp and 700Nm of torque.

Power is sent to all four wheels, propelling the SUV from 0-100kph in only 4.8sec—a humble claim compared to what we’ve experienced in the past driving this motor. The xLine has a fully electric range of up to 118km. With a discharged battery, fuel consumption averages 10km/L.

For the exterior, the xLine features 19-inch light-alloy wheels, BMW’s signature kidney grilles with the ‘iconic glow,’ an automatic two-piece split tailgate, and satin aluminum accents. Moving inside, you still get a widescreen display for your instrument panel and infotainment, fine-wood trim, a leather steering wheel, sport seats, a HiFi sound system, and a wireless charging tray.

BMW says the xLine is a highly practical choice, offering cost-efficient, emission-free driving for daily urban travel with robust power and long-range flexibility for weekend road trips. The xLine comes with a portable flexi-charger, a five-year comprehensive warranty for up to 200,000km, and an eight-year battery warranty for up to 120,000km.

With nearly a P1.5 million difference between this and the M-Sport variant, the xLine is worth a second look, especially if you want an X5 with a less aggressive exterior without sacrificing power.

Two trims are currently registered on the list: SX and EX, both front-wheel-drive variants. While a technical specification document is attached, it doesn’t specify any features exclusive to a higher trim (likely the SX based on Kia’s variant naming scheme for its local lineup).

The document lists the Kia Sportage’s measurements at 4,685mm long, 1,865mm wide, and 1,660mm tall. Different height measurements are also listed to account for an equipped roof rack. An X-Line Sportage (as driven by our executive editor Sharleen in South Korea) with a roof rack is 20mm taller than standard, for example.

Given these numbers, the Kia Sportage is virtually the same size as its Hyundai Motor Group cousin, the Tucson—makes sense, since they share a platform. Next to counterparts from Japan and China, however, the Sportage is slightly smaller than the Toyota RAV4 and the BYD Sealion 6.

The turbo-hybrid setup’s combined system output has been left blank in the specs document, so we can only state power output from individual components. The 1.6-liter turbocharged engine makes 178hp and 265Nm of torque, while the electric motor makes 64hp and 264Nm of torque.

From this, we can still expect combined system power similar to the hybrid Kia Sorento’s 232hp and 367Nm of torque. If we’re right and the Sportage makes around that much power, we can also expect it to be on the frugal side with fuel consumption (in mixed conditions, the Sorento was able to hit 15km/L).

All in all, the available spec sheet doesn’t reveal as much as we would like. Looks like we’ll need to wait a bit more until more information officially reveals itself. In the meantime, Kia will be present at the 2026 Philippine International Motor Show. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about the Korean brand’s plans.

Two mobility advocates took it upon themselves to design a detailed system map and database answering this frequently asked question among cyclists.

The map creators

Jacob, a graduating college student and commuter who happens to be a railway and aviation enthusiast, created the map to benefit bike or multimodal commuters.

Inspired by Berlin’s BVG system map, he collaborated with Matthew Gan, a software engineer who drives a car, bikes, and uses public transport, to design the map.

“There are plenty of maps of our current railway system that show our lines and stations, but I have yet to see one that shows where you can park your bike near a station and take the trains from there,” Gan said in an interview with Top Gear Philippines.

Gan compiled the information on bike parking from his personal experience, social media posts, Google Street View, and actual site visits to various stations.

“Bike parking at LRT-2 and MRT-3 stations is usually outdoors, so I was able to verify the bike parking just by using Google Street View. For LRT-1, however, most of their bike parking is inside the stations, so I asked LRMC (Light Rail Manila Corporation) for a list of stations with bike parking and then visited those stations to confirm and evaluate them,” said Gan.

Since not all stations have dedicated bike parking, Gan also included nearby establishments within an approximate 1km radius of each station and checked them out personally.

“I also strongly considered this because I usually bike to either Starmall EDSA-Shaw or SM Megamall, park my bike there, then take the MRT-3 or EDSA Carousel,” said Gan.

With this map, the two hope to give bike commuters and persons with limited mobility a quick reference for city rail travel and encourage more establishments to factor in active and sustainable mobility.

Clear and easy to understand at a glance, their system map shows the three train lines (Light Rail Transit Line 1 and 2, and Metro Rail Transit Line 3) with accessibility icons showing which stations have bike parking, elevators, and escalators. The map also integrates the stations of the Pasig River Ferry Service line, which notably allows both folding bicycles and full-size bicycles on board for multimodal transport.

Below the map is a rundown of which stations in the LRT and MRT lines have dedicated bike parking, the capacity of bikes, and their exact location, with the data enlarged on another sheet for easier reference.

A separate database for the bike parking near LRT/MRT stations provides pictures of various bike parking racks and ratings from 0 (not recommended) to 5 (excellent) in terms of each bike parking facility’s location, design, and usability.

They also share tips for those planning to bring their folding bikes on the LRT/MRT. The MRT and the LRT currently allow users of folding bikes or e-scooters (with wheel sizes up to 20 inches only) to bring them inside train carriages. However, users of full-size bikes can’t bring bikes on board, and will likely find the bike parking guide map useful if they want to take the trains to far stations.

Issues for bike parking improvement

Based on their rating criteria, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of good or excellent bike parking options, with most being assessed as fair. According to Gan, this reflects the sad reality for bike commuters in Metro Manila. The main consideration for cyclists is the location of bike parking.

“Many establishments offer bike parking, but they are often placed in not-so-friendly places, like under a staircase, next to loud and noisy machines, in areas that block entrances, walkways, or sidewalks, or in the same place where they store garbage, event props, and construction materials,” Gan told us.

During his assessment, he noted how bike racks are often placed behind car parking spaces, where bikers risk scratching vehicles going in and out. Others are often located on the lowest basement level, limiting mobility for those who can’t climb steep ramps.

Gan said that most spaces were obviously not designed with bike parking in mind, and just made use of whatever limited space to squeeze bike parking into. As a cyclist, he stressed how bikers consider the safety risks and only park in places where they can securely lock their bikes to a bike rack, and if parking areas are guarded or secured by a parking pass or ticket.

“Despite cycling being popular as both recreation and transport across different income classes, some places also seem to discriminate against bikes (whether directly or indirectly), and the way that some places design their parking for bikes shows that. I could only hope that establishments can do better to give bike parking the same care they would give to cars and motorcycles,” said Gan.

And while limited space issues are understandable for older LRT/MRT train stations, sadly, the lack of bike parking is also evident even in newly built stations.

“As a map maker, I felt displeased with the lack of bike parking facilities at the premises of the five new LRT-1 Cavite Extension stations and a few other stations in the current railway network,” said Jacob.

Another point for improvement is the bike rack design itself. While there are some decent bike racks, Gan pointed out that many seem to have been designed by people who “have never even tried to lock a bike on them.”

“Many are designed in a way where it’s hard or impossible to securely lock the frame of the bike to the rack, and others that compress the bikes way too close together to save space. If you think of it, if tight parking spaces for cars and motorcycles are inconvenient and risk scratches and dents, it's the same for bikes,” Gan said.

Opportunities for bike parking areas

According to Gan, establishments near train stations, such as malls, could benefit by integrating proper bike parking and supporting bike commuters, which could, in turn, encourage more foot traffic. 

“The best transit systems around the world are multimodal ones where they recognize that a journey begins the moment someone leaves their home. So with new public and active transport projects in the pipeline, I can only hope that both the government and private sector will learn from the mistakes of the past and be proactive in having secure and accessible bike parking in the plans for future train lines and stations,” said Gan.

Jacob pointed out how many developed countries around the world actually prioritize public transport, bikes, and walking for all ages over private vehicles. Many encourage bike and train commutes by allowing all types of bikes on trains.

“I hope that transport agencies and operators promote sustainable and inclusive transport, such as providing secure, accessible, properly designed bike parking facilities at every train station, if possible, and the ability to bring full-sized bikes inside trains like in the Netherlands and Germany. This must be a requirement in all present and future railway infrastructure,” said Jacob.

Mazda’s ‘Zinc Green Metallic’ is a new body color debuting on the current MX-5, both on the hardtop and the convertible. It’s quite different from any shade of green historically offered for the two-door sports car—it doesn’t share the deep hues of Neo Green offered on the NA and NB, or the neon flair of the NC’s Spirited Green Metallic.

The Japanese automaker describes the color as “a modern green that combines toughness and refinement, creating a strong presence while harmonizing seamlessly with both natural landscapes and urban settings.”

The reveal was made at Karuizawa Meeting 2026 on May 31, an event organized by and for MX-5 enthusiasts. An ND MX-5 finished in Zinc Green Metallic was on display, drawing crowds of fans excited to see their first look at the new paint job.

Mazda claims that Zinc Green Metallic draws inspiration in color and concept from zinc chromate primer, an anti-corrosive coating used in industrial applications to enhance durability. This translates into a grayish shade of green with a metallic finish, its visual properties transforming based on lighting conditions.

In darker settings, it appears as a solid color that gives off a sense of solidity and stability. Out in the light, the metallic sheen comes through and accentuates the MX-5’s curves and creases. Mazda also shares that the cool tone of Zinc Green Metallic and its color-shifting properties were achieved through bluish metallic flakes in the paint’s formulation.

As of now, we don’t have confirmation whether the MX-5 in our market will receive Zinc Green Metallic as a color option down the line. However, given the Philippines’ love for the Miata, we’re betting it’s a matter of when, not if.

The Mio Gear S gets added amenities, such as the Answer Back System that can be triggered using a dedicated remote. It has a digital instrument panel, a 12V socket, and an 18.6-liter underseat storage. It also gets a 5.1-liter fuel tank.

Mechanically, what’s new with the Mio Gear S is that it now packs the same engine as the Mio Fazzio. This is the 125cc air-cooled Blue Core Hybrid engine with the Smart Motor Generator technology. It provides electric power assist when accelerating from a standstill or when going uphill. It improves both performance and fuel efficiency.

The kind of thing that a big-tech ‘mobility provider’ would describe as a ‘last-mile personal transportation solution’ today, the Honda Motocompo was brilliantly ahead of its time. It was a tiny, boxy foldable scooter designed to stow in the boot of the City hatchback, so if you needed to get into a city centre, you could park on the outskirts then complete your journey on two wheels, leaving a stinky trail of blue two-stroke smoke in your wake. Well, it was the ’80s after all.

‘What’s so weird about a car having a clock as an optional extra?’ you may be asking yourself, and that’s a perfectly valid question. But what about a clock that costs the same as a terraced house in some parts of northern England? That’s what Bentley offered when the Bentayga first launched in 2015, in the form of an optional Breitling tourbillon dash clock that set buyers back around £150,000 (P12.4 million)—roughly the same as a Bentayga cost in the first place back then.

Of course, a car as opulent as the Bentayga is likely to have a few extravagant optional extras, and the brand’s Mulliner bespoke division also hoped to reel a few people in in 2016 by offering a hand-built fly fishing kit in the boot. Featuring space for all the stuff you’d need for an afternoon by the (presumably private) riverbank, we can’t find too much info on whether many Bentayga buyers took the bait or whether Bentley created a rod for their own backs with this accessory. Maybe it was all just a red herring.

We’ll move away from Bentleys soon, we promise, but we can’t simply ignore the fact that in the Batur, the company’s ultra-rare, £1.65 million coupe from a few years back, came with the option of having several pieces of the interior finished in 18-karat gold. This wasn’t the first time gold had been used in an automotive application—McLaren F1 engine bay, anyone?—it was the first time we could think of that it was there purely as a way for the owner to say ‘I have more money than you mere mortals could possibly even comprehend’.

5) Chrysler Highway Hi-Fi

Subjecting your passengers to your terrible music taste is easier than ever these days, but in the ’50s, you were largely limited to whatever fuzzy nonsense your local AM radio station was broadcasting. Chrysler was one of the first companies to try and tackle this, briefly offering ‘Highway Hi-Fi’, an optional dashboard-mounted vinyl record player. It took special records designed to withstand the bumps that came with playing them in a moving car, but this… didn’t work, and Highway Hi-Fi was discontinued in 1959 after just four years.

8) Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead teak decking

Wood panelling on cars was quite a big thing in the ’50s and ’60s, but trust Rolls-Royce to go all extra with it when it brought it in as an option on the Phantom Drophead Coupe in 2007. Just in case the owners of this opulent convertible were worried about getting separation anxiety from their yachts when on dry land, the DHC came with the option of a tonneau cover finished in a nautical-inspired, handcrafted teak decking. Ahoy there, etc, etc.

9) Rolls-Royce picnic hamper

We’re not done with Rolls-Royce yet. Oh no. Currently, you can order a special picnic hamper designed to perfectly fit into any of the company’s current models. If you’re picturing a wicker basket with a scruffy tartan blanket inside, though, you’re going to be disappointed. This thing’s made from aluminium, teak and leather, and contains Hungarian crystal wine glasses and Wedgwood porcelain crockery. Perfect for laying out on that little grassy bit at Watford Gap Services.

10) Rolls-Royce cigar humidor and whisky chest

You absolutely, categorically should not drink and drive, and you shouldn’t really smoke and drive either. In a Rolls-Royce Phantom, though, you’re probably not doing the driving, which means you can stretch out in the back seat, happily puffing away on a fat Cuban and sipping on your favourite small-batch 18-year-old single malt from Rolls’ Cellarette, an all-in-one cigar humidor and whisky chest designed to slot into the rear of its cars. Yours for a very reasonable £40,000.

11) Vauxhall Adam starlight roof

Right, we’ll move away from Rolls-Royces now or we could be here all day, but not without a mention of the company’s Starlight Headliner, which embeds hundreds of tiny fibre-optic lights into the ceiling to recreate a clear night sky. It’s a bit of a Rolls signature, making it all the more incongruous that a similar—albeit much less intricate—copycat version was offered on the Vauxhall Adam, of all cars.

12) Range Rover Event Seating

If you’ve ever been driving through the British countryside and happened upon a gaggle of people trying to shoot themselves some dinner, there’s usually at least one Range Rover nearby. Knowing its audience, Land Rover capitalised on this with its ‘Event Seating’, which makes use of the Rangie’s split tailgate to provide a pair of comfy leather seats, allowing you to take the weight off your feet after a day of shooting—or perhaps, for practicing your drive-by pheasant-bagging skills.

13) Fiat 500L espresso machine

According to some (possibly nebulous) sources we found, the typical Italian drinks anything between four and eight cups of coffee a day. No wonder they drive everywhere so fast. With such a prodigious consumption of caffeinated goodness, it’s no surprise that Italy’s biggest carmaker saw fit to offer an on-board espresso machine in the otherwise forgettable 500L people carrier.

14) Toyota Century doilies

The Toyota Century is proof of how notions of luxury differ vastly between cultures. Japan’s homegrown take on Rolls-Royces and Bentleys features an interior trimmed not in leather but in wool, curtains instead of tinted windows, an ostrich-feather duster for keeping the interior clean and, as an option, lace doilies for the headrests and backrests. Yes, what might put Brits in mind of boiled sweets and weekday daytime TV is considered a must-have luxury feature in Japan.

15) Mercedes-Benz CL granite trim

Things granite is useful for: sculptures, curling stones, slippery pavements and countertops in Cheshire kitchens. Note that car interior trim is not on that list, but that didn’t stop Mercedes from offering it through the Designo customisation programme on the second-generation CL, buyers of which could opt to have the centre console, steering wheel and door panels finished with genuine blue pearl granite. Funnily enough, not many people went for it, although Bentley’s Mulliner programme now offers a similar—if slightly less garish—treatment.

16) Mercedes-Benz Swarovski crystal headlights

Never a company to let considerations like taste and practicality get in the way of a good old-fashioned display of wealth, Mercedes later went on to offer the CL’s successor, the S-Class Coupe, with the option of no fewer than 47 Swarovski crystals embedded in its headlight units in 2014. Unlike the laser lights BMW and Audi were rolling out around the same time, these had absolutely no practical application whatsoever, but they did let passers-by know how filthy rich you were. And probably made you much more susceptible to headlight theft.

17) Renault baguette holder

One of our favourite things about Renault’s reborn 4 and 5 is how distinctively, unashamedly French they feel. Just stepping inside them makes us feel like we could be zipping around the cobbled streets of the 18th Arrondissement. That said, the option of a wicker baguette holder attachment for the centre console may be pushing our appetite for kitsch to the absolute limits. Oh, who are we kidding? We love it.

18) Mini Convertible Openometer

Ever owned a convertible car and found yourself wondering how much of your time driving it had been spent with the roof down? No, of course you haven’t—you’ve got better things to do with your life. That didn’t stop Mini from offering its second-gen Convertible with the ‘Openometer’, an additional dial that told you exactly that. Truly, one of the most pointless car options ever, especially because the main analogue part of the dial was maxed out after just seven hours.

19) Porsche leather-wrapped air vents

Having your seats and other parts of your car interior wrapped in peeled cow has long been a signifier of luxury, so it stands to reason that the more leather is in your car, the more luxurious it is, right? It does in Stuttgart, apparently, because Porsche has long offered buyers the option to trim every conceivable bit of the interior in leather, including the air vent slats. We jumped on the 911 configurator while writing this, and found that it’s currently a £1,233 option. Yikes.

20) Volvo heartbeat sensor

Carjacking was a big concern in the 2000s, which prompted Volvo to develop the Personal Car Communicator, a system that, among other things, could detect a heartbeat in your car and alert you via a flashing light on the keyfob. Frankly, its use case feels a bit limited, especially since it would only work if the alarm had already been triggered, although if you had a habit of accidentally locking your significant other in the car, it might also have come in handy.

We’ve all been there: driving along, wishing that a very specific part of our car interior was more reminiscent of the kind of 1970s house where something slightly seedy might be going on. Thankfully, the Nissan Cube had you covered with the option of a small circle of shagpile carpet that sat on the centre of the dash. Why? Well, firstly, you could use it to pop your sunglasses on to stop them sliding around. Secondly…erm…

It’ll drive around like this as a reminder of what it once was. A humble little sports car with two doors and four seats that lived a life until one day someone got hold of this pleasant little air-cooled device and swallowed it (almost) whole. As an analogy to the restomod business, it’s a pretty good one.

We know Singer’s work, it’s a master of the tasteful modification and restoration process, the gold standard to which all others must hold themselves. But this DLS Turbo tested us, didn’t it? Oof, it caught some flak: ‘the moment Singer jumped the shark’ some said, ‘too cartoonish’ and ‘comical’ said others. That last one I can get on board with, and when I walk round it, it makes me snort at the sheer improbability of it. Looking at pictures I’d thought it was a bit much, but out here the shapes, curves, and lines resolve. It’s curiously beguiling. And faithful.

The 934/5 racer. It was dominant across 1977, a huge influence on Singer’s founder and chief designer Rob Dickinson and therefore the starting point for the DLS Turbo. It follows on from the original Dynamics and Lightweighting Study, obviously, that a paean to natural aspiration and rear-engined driving dynamics, this to those bulging muscular ’70s racers. I mean, you knew it was turbocharged just by looking at it, didn’t you?

It’s a mullet on wheels: business at the front, full width, wide body party at the back. Now, it’s tempting to think that Singer is so fixated on cosmetics that everything else takes a back seat. To a certain extent that’s true – the design comes first and dictates the engineering that follows. But the engineering is fabulously comprehensive.

The 964’s petite engine bay is packed out with the 3.8-liter flat-six. There’s still a fan to air cool the engine block and that block is still original. But the four valve heads are new and water cooled, there are oil coolers as well, radiators at the front and a pair of giant monoscroll turbos, each mounted low behind a 345-width barrel of a rear wheel, exhausts venting out the side. Air is pulled in from arches, rear windows and deck lid—it takes a lot to both stoke and cool 710hp.

But not visually represent it. Those haunches communicate everything and right now they dominate the little ducktail.

Tomorrow it’ll be dressed in the giant loop rear wing for track work, but in most places that’s not road legal as it projects out further than the rear bumper. About 75% of owners are having both by the way. You just would.

I approach it with a sense of trepidation. Old turbocharged 911s had a certain reputation when they had less than half this power, and no matter what Singer has done this has a short wheelbase, wide tracks and a rear end that looks like it wants to catch up with the front and duff it up. I hop in. The door clicks open and clacks closed just so and I find myself nestled low behind the familiar upright windscreen and five dial layout. It’s simple in here, both in layout and trim design. Pared back for sportiness. A bit too pared back for me – I miss Singer’s cabin artistry when it’s not there.

Twist the key to start. There’s a sudden guttural, motorsport bark. It’s deep, low.

Unmistakably flat-six, but the noise is somehow bigger, more menacing. What follows next will, you assume, be a challenge. And true enough, every control has heft and weight. But they’re all in tune with each other. And they’re all fabulously precise. I blip the throttle, revs soar and die in an instant.

There’s an urgency to the way it gets moving, but most of all a sense of connection with the machine. This is nothing new to us, it’s simply the advantage restomod firms have in updating old masterpieces. But those old masterpieces had slop and slack in them as well. This doesn’t.

A good original 964 has torsional rigidity of around 7,000Nm per degree of twist. With the DLS that rose to 15,000Nm. Now it’s 25,000Nm. The original chassis is still under there, but it’s been reinforced, braced. There’s a full roll cage tucked away, there’s no luggage room under the nose as space has been donated to new damper turrets, an extensive strut brace and extra links. Reinforcement is everywhere. You might not see it, but you notice it.

It means when I accelerate, there’s no flex in the platform, no bucking from the suspension. I surf the torque and nothing’s misdirected, it all goes into forcing the car down the road. Which is an addictive experience. Singer’s stated aim was to try and recapture the excitement of the Ferrari F40. Job done, people.

There’s a level of intimidation here as the turbos spool and gust, and pressure builds in the car and your back and neck muscles, and your brain confirms that, yes, the DLS Turbo is bound to have more power than grip. However, let’s manage any old school fire n’ fury expectations here.

This engine has near faultless manners. The throttle response is beautiful, so there’s real pleasure in just rolling on and off the throttle on light openings, and the ramp into the boost is super smooth—no lag to speak of, just effortless linear thrust that builds and builds and... ooh, public road.

Driving it along Ojai Canyon is so satisfying. It’s quiet up here, the weather is bright, there’s no rush and the DLS Turbo isn’t histrionic. It’s happy to just spring between corners in third and fourth, surfing the torque. But it is a short, wide car with trailing arm rear suspension and it will twitch if you back off mid-corner. So it should. But it rides expensively on its adjustable Exe-TC dampers, tracks true and feels together.

The only thing I wish for is better rear visibility. The roll cage blocks the view out the back (this is a late prototype car and apparently that’s being changed for production) and the tiny side mirrors don’t do much more than remind you there’s a lot of width back there.

Important to remember that actually. You don’t want to get too greedy with an apex only to find the rear wheel is now steamrollering a rocky verge. Before I get that wrong, and while I’ve still got fuel in the tank, I turn round and head back towards LA.

Singer’s facility in Torrance is quiet this evening. The traffic round here is so bad that shifts start early and finish early to help the 450 staff dodge the worst of it. I’m back here for the wing switch over—and while the body panels are off, a good prod about underneath.

It takes two people over an hour to switch road parts for race. Exchanging the front bumper necessitates the removal of the front wheelarch liners, and you’re not going to be lifting that loop spoiler by yourself.

Opt for both panel sets (a P15-M/P11-M option) and the spares come in giant flight cases. There’s a third flight case if you want the other wheels. Might as well, eh? Average spend on a DLS Turbo is around $2.9 million (P178 million)—Singer doesn’t quote a base price as everyone goes wild with bespokery. The DLS Turbos aren’t built out here though, but at Singer’s other facility near Daventry in the UK. That’s where the engineering is done as well.

Not enough of the car is removed for me to see much underneath, but there’s a lot to talk about. As well as the chassis, everything else had to be uprated from the DLS to deal with the torque and grip the Turbo is capable of generating. The Sachs clutch can cope with 960lb ft, the six-speed manual is now from Ricardo rather than Hewland, there’s more assistance in the steering and more weight overall.

And that weight, like the visual balance, is focused on the rear—62% of it sits on the back axle.

The next day I’m at Willow Springs racetrack. Singer, together with a development partner, bought the circuit last year—that’s right, Singer is now at the ‘branching out into other areas’ stage. It’s new territory. The track has already felt the benefits—new surfaces, barriers and runoff. But no drainage.

Not usually an issue out in the desert north of LA, but the locals are in a flat spin about the rain. Tractors have been employed to bulldoze the water. Some are fitted with jet blowers. If we were at Anglesey I’d be describing conditions as ‘standard.’

Patchy, puddled, blustery conditions are revealing. The DLS Turbo’s fat Cup 2’s do their best but standing water detaches rubber from road, magnifying boost, wheelspin and handling traits—and their various consequences. But I can change this. There’s a five mode traction and stability system from Bosch. And it’s brilliant.

In Weather mode I can drive around and there’s not a trace of wriggle—the car seems able to read the surface better than I can. As conditions improve during the day I ramp it up through Normal, Sport and Track and it gives me more leeway. It’s not quite as uncanny as Ferrari and McLaren’s drift control systems, but for a restorer of old Porsches to have a safety net this sophisticated is stunning.

I end up turning it off of course. Just to get a better sense of its on limit behaviour. It’s all about managing the light nose. Get greedy with speed on the way in and the front end will push past the apex. Get back on the power while carrying too much lock and you’re into understeer. Try to push past that with power alone and you’ll probably eventually succeed, but you won’t be in a happy place, instead a world of scrappy, sudden oversteer.

Instead go in deep on the magnificent brakes (Brembo’s top line carbon-ceramics) to keep the nose loaded, get everything pointed in the right direction and then sit back and enjoy take off.

But contained in that process of cornering is so much satisfaction and communication. From the floor-hinged pedals and rev-blip downshifts to the weighty steering, barking flat-six and considerable weight transfer, this is a car that both engages and challenges.

No shortcuts, you’ve got to learn it. There might be a level of finesse and capability here that’s alien to a 35-year-old Porsche, but this is still not as clean, direct, forgiving and effortlessly fast as a modern supercar.

Good. It’s dirtier than that, thickly coated with attitude and smeared with charisma. The engine snarls, turbos whoosh, rear axle squats, nose rises, steering chatters and round I go for lap after lap. I’m only removed from my reverie when the fuel light comes on. The regular DLS is light, supple, rev hungry and intoxicating. I feared this might be a blunt instrument. And yes, it’s rolling thunder, heavier in my hands, more muscular and boisterous, more of a route one performer.

But the rewards, not least that slingshot thrust, are just as great. It’s addictive, I crave just one more hit of turbo, to feel that tension as torque twists tarmac and I brace for boost.

But I also know the truth—those powerlifter haunches and that loopy rear wing flatter to deceive. The DLS Turbo is just a big, friendly monster.

1) Alfa Romeo 155 Q4

The fact that Alfa Romeo is in the game at launch this time is a victory in itself, with Forza Horizon 5 having launched with nary a cloverleaf in sight. We were tempted by earlier models, but the touring car pedigree of this confrontationally boxy 155 wins out.

2) Aston Martin DB5

The 1964 DB5 has appeared in Forza titles all the way back to Horizon 3, and every time it returns it looks better. A genuinely timeless chassis design, sure it has the 007 factor in its favour but it doesn’t rely on big screen appearances to retain its cool. It even drifts pretty well…

3) Audi Sport Quattro

Simply a perfect car. Not only do its analog dials and abrupt right angles conjure a dearly missed motoring era, it retains incredible poise and purpose over 40 years after the first one rolled out of Ingolstadt. “The car that did more to further the cause of the performance car than almost any other,” we say in our review, “Audi’s 4WD icon still has relevance today.” Worth having in your FH6 garage, then.

4) BMW M3 (2005)

Feel free to mentally swap in your M3 of choice for this entry if you feel passionately enough about it, since FH6’s car list features all the important ones. For our money, though, it’s the E46 and its beautifully balanced, Need For Speed cover-gracing looks that warrants an immediate Japanese road trip.

Plus, in videogame form, you don’t even have to worry about the harsh gear shifts—the only con in our BMW M3 CSL review.

5) Ferrari 250 GTO (1962)

Another entry that could be occupied by any number of equally gorgeous models from the same manufacturer, since FH6’s Ferrari list is particularly voluminous. Designed for GT racing, where it dominated, the 250 GTO was built in small batches—only 33 of them in total. Scarcity like that isn’t an issue in the digital world, though, as many Forza players will attest having been overtaken in their hypercar by a perfectly tuned 250 GTO in an online race.

Imposingly elegant and still incredibly competitive against other cars in its class in Horizon, this one’s a heart and a head pick combined. Better looking than that other Ferrari, in any case.

6) Ford GT (2017)

It’s not easy trying to follow in the GT40’s footsteps, but subsequent GTs have done a spectacular job of retaining the fundamental shape and performance while cramming them full of modern tech that makes them even faster.

Enter the infinitely grippy 2017 GT, a joy to drive on each and every corner in Horizon 6’s Japan. Just know that this car’s being immediately dropped from the list if we see even one of them suffocating in gaudy vinyls and a massive cartoon girl design. You have been warned.

7) Hennessey Venom F5

“A blood-curdling, eye-rattling earthquake of a car” is how we described the Venom F5 after spending some time behind the wheel. A bespoke model from Texan tuner John Hennessey, this one’s not short on horsepower. 1,817 of them, in actual fact. That, obviously, makes it a perfect daily driver for popping down to the 7-Eleven and picking up a strawberry cream cheese sando.

8) Hyundai N Vision 74

Somehow Hyundai’s attention-grabbing 2022 concept looks more at home in a videogame than on the real road. We still want one for both realms, of course, but they’re considerably easier to acquire in this setting. The hydrogen fuel cell and electric powertrain give you 670hp to play with. As long as you don’t meet a Hennessey Venom F5 at the traffic lights, that should be plenty.

9) Koenigsegg Jesko

Hypercars can start to feel a bit rote and homogenous in this series. Fast is fast, after all, and after a certain top speed there’s not much discerning one billionaire’s track toy from another. Unless you’re driving a Jesko.

A terrifying nightmare of carbon fiber, seething brake discs and untamed power, this is “the hypercar’s hypercar” as we note in our 10/10 review. You could drop the better part of three million quid on one, or you could drive one in Horizon 6. Or both, we suppose.

10) Lamborghini Revuelto

A controversial pick, we’ll concede, but fast with a massive back catalogue of the fighting bull’s heritage, we just keep coming back to this one. A marriage of nu-school battery power and combustion engine, the Revuelto is named after a famously rebellious 19th century bull who escaped the arena and into the alleys on multiple occasions, and somehow—if you squint—that maps to this hybrid. Aesthetically it’s still in touch with the Diablo and Countach, but it’s bleeding edge enough to look at home on Shibuya crossing.

11) Lancia Stratos HF Stradale

A brutalist wedge of pure performance that simply doesn’t care what you think. The heritage alone makes this a prime candidate for your garage, being the first rally car built for purpose rather than converted from an existing road model.

Plus, the Hoonigan RS200 drivers get really cross when you beat them in this.

12) Lucid Air Sapphire

Its name may sound like a vape flavour, but this is, in fact, “without question the best-handling EV on sale” as we point out in our 10/10 review. It debuted in FH5, and still has an air of exoticism which, frankly, the Porsche Taycan can’t compete with.

13) Mazda Savanna RX-7

What it comes down to is this: you’re going to want a drift car in this game about driving around Japan. And you could be contrarian about it, or you could just do what your heart wants and put a widebody kit on this gorgeous ’90s incarnation of the RX-7. Who are you trying to kid?

14) Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II (2002)

To an entire generation of gamers, this is the videogame car. Always in the upper echelons of Need For Speed and Gran Turismo’s rosters and almost never spotted in the wild, the Spec II Skyline GTR has an agricultural look and feel to it, almost as though it’s angry to have been taken away from its far more pressing work in the fields to entertain you on the road.

Don’t you dare get it in anything other than standard issue blue.

Is there another car in FH6’s collection that more succinctly sums up a country and a decade than this one? We’re betting not. The post-war fins, the domed roof and more chrome than a Noughties rapper’s mouth—it’s a driveable time capsule that’s distinct from the other vintage US models in the game, which are all vying for dominance in the same very specific muscle car field.

17) Porsche 911 Turbo S (2023)

The “fastest and most driveable 911 there’s ever been,” the Turbo S is another highly technical marriage of electric power and combustion, like the Revuelto. Also like the Revuelto, it’s stayed in close touch with its ancestors and looks just as primed for a coffee table book cover as the earliest models of 911.

18) Renault Clio Williams

Renault automotive and Williams F1 had a mad idea in 1993—what if they worked together on the popular Clio hatchback to create a special edition that was far too scary for anyone to actually drive? And thus, the Clio Williams was born. A landmark moment in hot hatch culture, and a car that retains far more dignity than its aggressively styled descendents.

19) Shelby Cobra 427 S/C

Ultra-rare—only 53 were built in total—and effortlessly gorgeous, the Cobra has been a mainstay in Forza games for years but still makes us stop and have a gawp when we see one in a multiplayer race.

Its low centre of gravity converts 425hp to something useable, a huge number for 1965, and a number intended for the race track until it was converted to a road-legal model at the last minute.

20) Toyota Supra RZ

Forza Horizon 5 went to great efforts to place the newer Supra model at center stage of your Mexican adventure, but it’s still the ’98 incarnation that has our hearts.

Jaguar has responded to the reveals of the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupe and the Ferrari Luce by throwing its arms out wide and shouting, ‘How you like me now, suckers.’

Despite suffering an international backlash from so-called ‘fan’ communities upon the reveal of its Type 00—and now Type 01—electric vehicle, the British carmaker is basking in suddenly becoming the subject of the automotive world’s appreciation.

Sources close to Jaguar have said it now plans on driving prototype Type 01s—with door graphics of Sir William Lyons wearing sunglasses—relentlessly around the streets of Affalterbach and Maranello, once it has figured out a route that takes in fast charging points.

“Bet we’re looking pretty sweet right now,” a source said. “National scandal over a sodding concept car and advertising campaign? Leave it out. Have you seen what the others are doing? Forget a bold and forward-thinking concept making the front pages of the rags—those things demand that parliamentary committees be convened.

“Suddenly, a pastel-pink Jaguar that looks like it came out of the cool Batman cartoons is now your automotive savior, and after the two years we’ve just had, we’re here for it.”

When pushed on how Jaguar would capitalise on this about-face, the source said: “Just wait until you see the SUV version of the Type 01. It’s a brutalist critique on humankind’s automotive folly intertwined with sensually expressive premium luxury for the super-mega-ultra-highest-net-worth consumer.

“Basically, we’ve put the Type 01 on massive stilts to create a road-going naval destroyer,” the source added, “and it’ll still somehow look prettier than that AMG and Ferrari. Yeesh.”

This crowdfunded attempt to bring the fastest production car record back to the U S of A in 2017 saw a Dodge Viper ACR, supplied from a Texas dealership, lap the Green Hell in 7min 1.30sec in the hands of Lance Arnold, before tire failure (it was on street-legal tires) on the second lap put an end to further attempts. Still a hugely impressive effort nonetheless.

Ferrari famously doesn’t give an (official) toss about flinging its cars around the ’Ring, so it was left to Christian Gebhardt and German publication sport auto to set this time in the 488 Pista back in 2019. It’s a real shame Ferrari won’t play nicely—imagine what the marque’s full technical team and its bottomless pockets could do...

20) Lamborghini Aventador SuperVeloce LP750-4: 6min 59.73sec

The Aventador SV squeaked into the elite sub-seven minutes gang when it managed 6min 59.73sec in 2015, helped by a diet that saw around 50kg of weight shredded, thanks to the use of carbon-fiber door and sill panels, as well as stripping the carpet, the sound deadening, and even the stereo in the name of lightness. A noble sacrifice indeed.

19) Yangwang U9 Xtreme: 6min 59.15sec

Shortly after it hit 496kph to become the fastest production car on the planet in 2025, the Yangwang briefly became the fastest electric production car around the Nürburgring with a time of 6min 59.15sec. That’ll be the combined 2,959hp from its four electric motors—each of which can spin up to 30,000rpm—in a car that weighs 2.5 tons. Woah.

18) Ferrari 296 GTB: 6min 58.70sec*

Ferrari’s current production car record holder around the Nürburgring is the 296 GTB, which recorded a time of 6min 58.70sec in 2023. That was in the hands of that man again, Christian Gebhardt, while the car was also equipped with the Assetto Fiorano package, which shaves off around 12kg from the 1,470kg dry weight. Every little helps...

17) Porsche 918 Spyder: 6min 57.0sec*

The Porsche 918 Spyder set a landmark record around the Nürburgring when it became the first street-legal production car to break the seven-minute barrier back in 2015. Driver Marc Lieb knocked 14sec off the Gumpert Apollo Sport’s time at an average speed of 180kph, securing his and the car’s place in what was back then a very exclusive club.

16) Porsche 911 GT3 RS (991.2): 6min 56.4sec*

The 911 GT3 RS became the third production Porsche to break the seven-minute barrier when it recorded 6min 56.4sec in 2018—some 24 (twenty-four!) seconds faster than what the previous GT3 RS model could manage. That was in the hands of Porsche works race driver Kévin Estre, who went head-to-head with Porsche development driver Lars Kern to set the fastest lap—with their combined four laps reportedly only tenths of a second apart.

15) Lamborghini Huracan Performante LP640-4: 6min 56.45sec

Ahead of the car’s official debut at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show, Marco Mapelli took the camouflage-liveried Performante around the Nordschleife in under seven minutes, thanks to a new ‘Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva’ active aero system and a 40kg weight reduction over the standard Huracan. That’s one way to get everyone’s attention. Lambo’s press department led with its 6min 52.01sec time afterwards, but that was over the 20,600-meter lap. It did also release the full lap time, so that’s what we’ve gone with here.

14) Porsche 911 GT3 (992.2): 6min 56.29sec

In 2025, Porsche set a new record for the fastest production car with a manual gearbox around the ’Ring in its latest 911 GT3—a full 9.5sec faster than the Dodge Viper ACR (which set its time around the shorter loop, too). Jörg Bergmeister’s lap was also 3.6sec quicker than the previous-gen 992.1 GT3 with an auto gearbox. Some talent.

13) Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Manthey Kit: 6min 55.53sec

In April 2024, Porsche sent a Taycan Turbo GT equipped with the Weissach Package around the Green Hell in a time of 7min 07.55sec. Two years later, it returned with a Taycan Turbo GT fitted with a new Manthey Kit and smashed that time by 12sec. It was also 9sec quicker than the production-spec Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, meaning Porsche reclaimed its title of fastest ‘electric executive car.’

12) Porsche 911 GT3 Manthey Kit (992.2): 6min 52.98sec

Not the first and not the last time you’ll see a Porsche 911 with a Manthey Kit on this list. Seven months after Porsche sent its new GT3 around the ’Ring, it returned with another car dressed up by the German racing team turned tuner, and recorded a time of 6min 52.981sec, shaving 3sec—light years in the motorsport world—off its previous best time.

11) Radical SR8 LM: 6min 52.70sec

The best of British—or at least Britain’s best effort to date—set a blistering time of 6min 52.70sec in 2009, though it wasn’t without controversy. The car divided opinion on whether it had stretched the production car definition a little too far to be considered a proper contender, but hey—it’s got a passenger seat and everything, so that definitely makes it a legit street car in our eyes.

10) Porsche 911 GT2 RS (991.2): 6min 51.45sec

Back in 2017, Porsche’s then-VP of motorsport and GT, Frank-Steffen Walliser, said he’d be perfectly happy if this car lapped the Nordschleife in the ballpark of 7min 5sec. Chopping 14sec off it, then? Quite the achievement. The then-fastest and most powerful road-legal 911 averaged 183ph on its way to setting the milestone.

9) Chevrolet Corvette ZR1: 6min 50.76sec

A mere couple of months after Ford set an American production car Nürburgring lap record in 2025 in the GTD, Chevrolet one-upped it with a time of 6min 50.76sec in the ZR1. It was helped by a ZTK track-focused package bringing improved aerodynamics, suspension, and tires as it responded to Ford in emphatic fashion. Although that wasn’t the end of the battle...

8) Lamborghini Aventador SVJ LP770-4: 6min 49.42sec

Lamborghini held the Nürburgring production car record for two years when it set a time of 6min 49.42sec in the Aventador SVJ back in 2018—until the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series came along and stole its crown. Our own Ollie Marriage described it as “composed” when he tested the same record-setting model later that year. Ha!

7) Porsche 911 GT3 RS (992.1): 6min 49.32sec

In 2022, Porsche took its then-new 911 GT3 RS to the Green Hell and set a time of 6min 49.32sec—over 10sec quicker than the ‘standard’ GT3. Essentially a full-blown race car with number plates, it develops twice as much downforce as its predecessor—helped by a huge swan-neck rear wing that sits higher than the roofline.

6) Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X: 6min 49.27sec

The fastest American production car to lap the ’Ring is currently the Corvette ZR1X, and they didn’t even use a professional driver—Chevy vehicle dynamics engineer Drew Cattell whipped the ZR1X around the track so furiously in June 2025 that he’s now the quickest non-pro at the Nürburgring. We tip our hat, sir!

5) Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series: 6min 48.04sec

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series got one over the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ (2018) and Porsche 911 GT2 RS (2017) when it managed a time of 6min 48.04sec around the Green Hell in 2020 in the hands of German racing driver Maro Engel. Merc also said the track was “not yet totally dry”—so it could have gone even quicker still.

4) Porsche 911 GT3 RS Manthey Kit (992.1): 6min 45.38sec

In April 2026, Porsche returned to the ’Ring with another 911 GT3 RS, only this time equipped with a Manthey Kit consisting of major aero, suspension, and brake upgrades—the most obvious being that simply ginormous DRS-equipped rear wing. Careful, or it’ll have your head off. Anyway, the result? A nearly 4sec improvement. Wow.

3) Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey Kit (991.2): 6min 43.30sec

Further proof, as if it were needed, that Manthey is rather good at what it does. Porsche bettered its previous result in the 911 GT2 RS set in 2017, courtesy of a Manthey Kit including a new rear spoiler, modified diffuser, and aerodiscs on the rear wheels. The resulting lap time was 8sec quicker than that of the ‘standard’ GT2 RS.

2) Ford Mustang GTD: 6min 40.8sec

In 2024, the Ford Mustang GTD became the first American car to dip below 7min, and it then returned in April 2025 with an improved time of 6min 52.072sec. Chevrolet then went and stole its American-spec crown...but then Ford hit back in April 2026 with a time of 6min 40.8sec in a pre-production GTD Competition. As Ford CEO Jim Farley said, game very much on...

1) Mercedes-AMG One: 6min 29.09sec

The only production car to break sub-6:30—and sub-6:40 for that matter—is the Mercedes-AMG One. Merc achieved the feat in October 2024 when it beat its first record set in 2022 by over 6sec, helped by ‘perfect’ conditions (20-degree track and 15-degree air). You can remind yourself of that lap and behold Engel nailing it by clicking these blue words.

Lotus has added lightness via an optional ‘Lightweight Handling Pack,’ which, again, for a lightweight sports car designed to handle feels...yeah. In any case, this optional Handling Pack gets two-way adjustable Multimatic dampers, rides a whopping 5mm lower, and features a new titanium exhaust, lithium-ion battery, carbon-fiber components, and something to record how fast (or slow) you are around a circuit.

Elsewhere, Lotus has refined the Emira 420 Sport sports car via new body components designed to better manipulate the air around it: new vents, a new front splitter, larger sills, a lip spoiler, and a louvred tailgate. There are numbers attached to how much it improves the airflow. You might care, but you might care more that these additions “subtly reference” old stuff like the Esprit Turbo.

There’s more optional stuff, including the chance to add lots more carbon fiber to the exterior of the car, different wheels, new colors, and a removable tinted glass roof panel available for the first time.

“Adjustable dampers, increased downforce, sharper responses, reduced roll—every detail obsessively engineered to put the driver more in control,” said Gavan Kershaw, Lotus Cars’ handling expert.

You’ll pay for such control, mind—the 420 Sport starts from £105,900 (P8.75 million before taxes).

Modellista’s treatment of the new Hilux is pretty much what you would expect from the brand. The bodykit features gloss-black hood garnish, matte-black headlight garnish with Modellista branding, LED lights beside the foglamps coated with Line-X, and taillight garnish also texture-coated in Line-X.

Modellista includes a matte-black hard cover for the truck bed equipped with an LED lamp. There’s also an aluminum under protector for both the front and rear portions of the pickup truck, which could be useful when going off-road, and 18-inch wheels finished in matte olive and polished silver. Other exterior accessories include door-handle protectors with a faux carbon-fiber finish in white, silver, or black.

Alpine itself is having a much better go at racing this year, currently ranking fifth behind Red Bull in the team standings. Much better than the 2025 season, which saw the French team dead last with just 22 points. Flavio Briatore, Alpine’s de facto team principal, adds: “With the improved performance on track, and Alpine having its best-ever points total to start a season, this new collaboration with Gucci shows the growing momentum behind the team.”

Little else has been revealed so far, not even a hint at what the team’s new identity or kit will look like. Fair enough, since we’re not even halfway through the 2026 season yet. Monaco is up next on the race calendar, from June 5 to 7 next week.

Still, it has to make you wonder: Will Alpine’s signature blue play well with Gucci’s green, red, and gold on the livery next year?

But we now live in a world of instant responses and polarized opinion. Love or hate. Thumbs up or down. A fire emoji or a poo. Car designs and the Internet’s thirst for controversy are a potent mix.

So the new Ferrari Luce EV is...going to take some getting used to. Okay, a lot. Even more than other recent marmalade-droppers, the Jaguar Type 00 and the Bentley EXP 15. And that Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door thing with too many rear lights.

A good time, then, to reflect on other unloved designs from Ferrari’s storied past. For every qualified success like the perfect 458 Italia, the dainty F355, or the gorgeous 275 GTS, there’s often another Ferrari disparaged for looking like a horse’s breakfast, not a prancing stallion.

We’ve rounded up the most controversial Ferrari designs of all time (in no particular order). Are some aging better than others—and is the Luce destined to be the most hated of all time?

Ferrari 849 Testarossa

The facelifted SF90 uses an angular wedge theme to go with the historic Testarossa name, but it’s decidedly not retro.

Those twin-tail rear aero ramps are inspired by endurance racers of the late ’60s and ’70s. But the blacked-out ‘pillar’ in the creased-up side and the black eye mask up front sit uneasily on the rest of the car. Oh, and what’s with those sharp cheek implants on the nose? Very spec-sensitive, this one. But don’t forget, the ’80s Testarossa wasn’t initially adored. Now, it’s the most iconic thing with slats besides a Venetian blind.

Ferrari 400

Is time finally being kind to the much-maligned Ferrari 400? It, and the 365 GT4 that came before, plus the 412 it was developed into, have been roundly slated for unimaginative business-barge looks, not to mention the infamous (American) three-speed automatic gearbox.

But what was once dull styling now seems crisp and unfussy. And if the 400 can look cool five decades too late, then maybe the Luce will be a stunner...in 2076.

Ferrari Mondial

Usually top of the charts in lists of ‘awful Ferraris’, the Mondial was a bold attempt to make a cost-effective grand tourer with four seats in the middle. The only problem was that ‘the middle’ was already home to a V8 engine.

It started as a 2.9-liter and was later enlarged all the way up to a 3.4-liter, but never amassed more than 300hp. Meanwhile, the proportions were off, thanks to that confused mid-engined 2+2 brief. The side intake looked like accident damage, and the whole thing now looks like some sort of luxury Toyota MR2.

Even pop-up headlights can’t save this one. Speaking of which...

Ferrari 512M

The 512M doesn’t have pop-up headlights. Reason? It was a facelifted Testarossa—a car from way back in the mists of 1984, still trying to mix it with the supercar elite in late 1994. And like the de-aging tech used on Robert De Niro in that gangster movie...you could tell.

The peekaboo headlamps were binned for gormless flush items, there was a dodgy attempt to graft on a F355’s chin, and the quad rear lights were round pegs in the Testarossa’s square hole rear.

Add in the split-rim throwing-star wheels—surely Ferrari’s worst rim design until the aero-rims of the Luce—and you’ve got a car that simply lived too long, into an era it no longer suited.

Ferrari Consisco

This one-off (thankfully) was once an innocent 328 GTS. A German designer decided he would turn it into a roofless lightweight speedster and stunned the 1993 German motor show with this cross-eyed roller skate.

It was auctioned in 2018 and only made around £100,000, which is a lot of money for an old Italian car with literally no spare body panels on Earth, but peanuts for a unique Ferrari.

Ferrari 575 GTZ

Whether or not Zagato has ever actually improved a car is a hotly debated Internet topic. One of the cases for the prosecution is this inflated take on the 575 Maranello, which was fitted to a bouncy castle pump in 2006.

Six were built in total, but Ferrari didn’t borrow any themes from this car for the 599, which came along in the same year. Wonder why?

Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione

There’s no argument: The 288 GTO is one of the most perfectly proportioned supercars ever made. And the fact it was ‘omologato’ to go racing (before Group B was canceled) makes it even cooler.

So at least the Evoluzione version—effectively the race car that never was—has a pedigree reason for looking so brutal. Only six were ever made, so despite the piggy front lights and the front grille made out of some allotment fencing, it’s one of the most valuable ’80s Prancing Horses.

Ferrari FZ93 Zagato

Of course, we had to mention Zagato again. They’re just so wilfully...weird.

The FZ93 was, like the Consisco, another ’90s one-off, this time based on the pretty 512TR. There’s a touch of early Enzo about it, which is cool, but also a whiff of Triumph TR7, which definitely isn’t.

Ferrari Superamerica 410 Ghia

It turns out quite a few of the oddest-looking Ferraris ever made weren’t really the work of Ferrari at all.

Take this chrome-smothered, fin-infested Cadillac wannabe. It was the work of Ghia, and again, a one-off proposal for American market Ferraris, which thankfully never went mainstream. Then again, it’s so outrageous and form-over-function that it kinda comes full circle and looks awesome. Help. Our eyes might have stopped talking to our brain.

Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Navarro

It’s not a shooting brake (like the FF), more a sort of elongated fin-clad pickup truck without the tailgate. The 330GT 2+2 Navarro was a unique commission by F1 racer-turned coachbuilder Piero Drogo for the head honcho of an Italian nightclub called Norbert. The owner, not the club.

With its 300hp 4.0-liter V12, it talked the Ferrari talk, but looked about as far away from late ’60s Maranello elegance as you could get.

Ferrari GG50

Since we’ll be banned from ever entering the Italian nation again after this, we might as well go for broke.

Last on our lineup of the strangest-looking Ferraris ever is this one-off created by legendary pensmith Giorgetto Giugiaro to mark 50 years of his car designing career. The chassis and the powertrain of the already slightly awkward-looking 612 Scaglietti were roped in to form the basis for a coupe with headlights that are too slim, a backside that’s too tall, a toothy grille, and what appear to be Nissan GT-R taillamps.

It’s not GG’s finest work, in our humble opinion—but is it more elegant and futureproof than the Luce?

The Philippines is expected to play a big part in that plan as the Japanese carmaker has labeled our market as one of its ‘priority countries.’ With that, Mitsubishi’s operations are expected to grow exponentially with more aggressive sales, local manufacturing, and continued partnerships.

In April, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines announced its intention to assemble a hybrid model at its Santa Rosa plant in Laguna. Interestingly, the head offices in Japan discussed the local assembly of hybrid models—we won’t speculate too much on this, but it doesn’t sound like a simple typo.

At the time of writing, the only other confirmed nameplate in this product offensive is a new Mitsubishi Xpander set for the Southeast Asian market. There are no details about its pending release, but we should see it sometime before 2031. The current-generation Xpander has been around since 2017, so a full model change is imminent. That said, while it’s an aging model, it was still the top-selling vehicle in the Philippines last year.

Mitsubishi will also target selling more premium vehicles in the country through “broader sales finance offerings.” This suggests that Mitsubishi Motors Finance Philippines will also be expanding to accommodate more buyers.

As of August 2025, the Philippines stood out as Mitsubishi’s third-largest global market. The country and the carmaker have a storied history, and it looks like another big chapter is on the horizon. While the upcoming Xpander and Pajero have likely secured local releases, that still leaves 11 more nameplates that could push the needle for the brand’s Philippine-based and international operations.

Sold through the Toyota Racing Development website, the GR parts for the new Hilux include a gloss-black front grille, a dual-pipe dress-up muffler made from stainless steel, GR mud flaps in black or red, and GR sport side visors, which were designed to improve steering stability and ventilation.

Other upgrades include GR performance dampers, a Yamaha-developed component that installs on the front and rear of the Hilux to help mute vibrations and stabilize handling. There are also GR door stabilizers that help improve body rigidity.

TRD says that, in principle, the GR parts can’t be combined with Toyota Genuine Parts or Modellista Parts, but you can contact them to confirm compatibility if you choose to mix and match. The GR parts for the new Hilux range from JPY16,500 (P6,380) for the door stabilizers and JPY140,800 (P54,439) for the dress-up muffler.

That’s a lot sooner than it sounds. The Japanese carmaker then shared that the new Pajero will be further developed into a series of vehicles.

Get ready, folks. We could see different body types and variants galore for the upcoming Pajero. For the uninitiated, previous generations were offered in short wheelbases, while the Pajero Mini quickly became an enthusiast favorite. This also suggests that the Pajero could be equipped with varying powertrains. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Mitsubishi also plans to release 13 new models over the next six years, as it continues “concentrating resources on key countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Japan.” With that, a new hybrid vehicle is expected to be built at the brand’s plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna. Production is expected to start sometime in 2028, by which time the new Pajero will have been launched.

Previous reports have said that the Pajero is scheduled to debut in December 2026, but the rumors about where it will be built have not been put to rest. Other speculation suggests that manufacturing could be moved to Thailand, alongside the Triton. More official details should be revealed in the near future.

It’s definitely going to be an interesting year for the brand. Before we see the Pajero, a separate hybrid crossover will first see Philippine roads at the 10th Philippine International Motor Show in June. More as we get it.

The Toyota booth at PIMS 2026 will see the reveal of new models, previewed by the carmaker in a teaser earlier this week. Public test drives of “fuel-efficient ICEs, practical HEVs, and future-ready BEVs” will also be available.

The Toyota-backed T-OPT aftermarket brand, which launched at MIAS earlier this year, will also be present at PIMS next week. T-OPT offers spare parts for older Toyota models that still see plenty of time on the road today, such as the Vios, Wigo, Avanza, Innova, and Hiace. Toyota hails the brand as yet another form of support for its vehicles beyond the purchase.

Last but not least, Gazoo Racing will also be exhibiting modified cars—a GR Supra and a GR Corolla—at the booth. Motorsports fans can get up close with these performance vehicles and get their hands on GR merchandise available for purchase.

Speaking of Toyota’s PIMS 2026 participation, TMP first vice president of vehicle sales operations Elijah Marcial comments: “Toyota is dedicated to ensuring our customers’ choice leads to a smooth ownership experience, and one that gives them a dedicated peace of mind. We hope that with Toyota’s PIMS 2026 booth, guests will be able to have the power of choice to choose what is best for their mobility needs.”

To be launched as a fully electric rear-wheel-drive crossover, the Q will arrive as the reincarnated QQ, which first debuted in the Philippines in the 2000s. While the two share a similar name, Chery has stressed that this new crossover has been overhauled to offer more range and capability.

That’s a range of 405km on a full charge, to be exact. The Chinese carmaker has not yet revealed the full local specifications, but in its domestic market, the Q is equipped with a single electric motor rated at 120hp and 115Nm of torque. It also uses a GB/T charger, but hopefully, we’ll see it with a more accessible outlet at PIMS 2026.

Speaking of charging, the battery onboard has a maximum capacity of 41.28kWh, and also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) functions. There should also be ample carrying space, with a 70-liter front trunk and a rear cargo area that expands to 1,450 liters.

The Q is expected to go up against the likes of the Geely EX2 (if it ever gets launched) and the GAC Aion UT in the compact EV segment. It may also attract a new wave of buyers as the latest Chery model outside of the Tiggo lineup. Pricing has also not yet been revealed, but thankfully, we’ll only have to wait for a week longer.

We recently got to try the upcoming VF MPV7 in Vietnam, and this is likely to induce more demand for the brand. Introduced last May 2026, the MPV7 is temptingly priced at P1.239 million with a battery subscription, and P1.518 million without a battery subscription.

The design is familiar by now, an MPV interpretation of the VinFast design language: slim light bar, small grille (no hot engine to cool), clean side profile, pleasing rear end. The ‘V’ logo can be seen on both ends.

The MPV7 is just handsome enough to be easy on the eyes. But it’s not striking, making it ideal for those who want something that doesn’t draw too much attention. This will be a good match for small families or first-time MPV buyers.

In the cabin, it leans more toward function than frills. The interior materials feel durable; not the softest, but they seem like they will last. More important, they will survive being scratched, banged, and spilled on. The steering wheel doesn’t adjust for reach, but that’s expected in this price range. The seats are comfortable with supportive side bolsters; these should be good for long drives.

The center console is a two-tier setup, with a big storage area underneath the cupholders. As I said, utility is the prevalent theme here. The A/C is surprisingly cold. The heat in Vietnam is hotter than in Metro Manila, something that surprised me. But the MPV7’s air-conditioner easily cooled the cabin. An infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is found, like all modern cars, at the center of the dashboard.

The first and second rows can easily accommodate my large frame. I highly doubt that I will fit comfortably in the third row. But my six-footer colleague, Kap Maceda Aguila of BusinessWorld, was able to sit in the third row and emerge without looking for a chiropractor (although he did get a massage at the hotel the next day). For young children and small adults, it should be a liveable ride.

With the rear seat folded, there’s about 500 liters of useful cargo space. Fold both second and third rows, and up to 1,240 liters of space is available. I saw the third row folded, and the space will easily swallow bags for a family’s long weekend vacation.

As expected, power comes easily to the MPV7. With an electric motor generating 201hp and 280Nm of torque, the VinFast MPV surges to 100kph without breaking a sweat. The brakes are good at scrubbing off speed, too. You feel the weight of the vehicle because of the batteries and such, but it’s mostly predictable in terms of handling. With just me and a marshal in the MPV7, it can even be called enjoyable given the abundance of power available.

We did try an acceleration test with five (rather big) adults, and the MPV7 clearly felt the added load. It was still strong compared to a typical gasoline MPV, but heavy weight naturally affects the electric motor’s performance and range. Speaking of the latter, the MPV7’s 450km range is more than sufficient for city driving and quick jaunts to nearby provinces.

The VF MPV7 feels like a worthy addition to VinFast’s local lineup—a value proposition because of its economical EV powertrain and affordable price. With a battery subscription, it costs less than the top-spec Toyota Veloz. Without a battery subscription, it’s about the price of a mid-spec Toyota Innova E.

The MPV category is one of the most competitive in our automotive industry, but many entries are still gasoline- or diesel-powered. With the Vietnamese brand’s momentum and the continuous demand for electrified models that appeal to the broader market, the MPV7 looks like the right product at the right time.

It will join the Forester e-Boxer as the latest Subaru with efficient electrification and rugged engineering. While the former uses a 2.5-liter engine, the smaller Crosstrek is equipped with a more sensible 2.0-liter mill to power its hybrid system. Its official fuel efficiency has yet to be revealed, but it is rated to deliver 154hp and 196Nm of torque.

The powertrain is then mated to the brand’s Lineartronic CVT, along with Subaru Intelligent Drive. That technology automatically adjusts engine response and power management based on current driving conditions.

The hybrid Crosstrek also features an Active Torque Split AWD system, which offers real-time adjustments for optimal traction control. It should work in tandem with the dual-function X-Mode when driving on mud and dirt.

Inside, Subaru has equipped the Crosstrek with an 11.6-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A wireless charging pad has also been added, and a glass sunroof comes standard. The crossover features up to 1,297 liters of cargo space.

The latest version of the Subaru EyeSight suite of advanced driving aids has also made its way to the new Crosstrek. It now uses a wide-angle monocular camera to more accurately detect pedestrians and cyclists. Adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and the relatively new emergency driving stop system are all on board.

At launch, the hybrid Crosstrek will be available in Citron Yellow Pearl and Sand Dune Pearl. Prices have yet to be announced, but we’ll be seeing it in the metal come June 4, 2026, for PIMS 2026 at the World Trade Center Manila. Watch this space for the latest updates.

According to BYD, the Sealion 7 is where performance meets practicality. Its powerplant is advertised to pack enough oomph for spirited drives, along with plenty of range for daily drives and weekend trips. Not to mention an AWD system and a few interesting drive modes to boot.

The crossover form factor then gives BYD Cars Philippines’ latest vehicle a sharp look and flexible people- and cargo-carrying capacities. There are a lot of details to unpack, so without further ado, here is everything you need to know about the Sealion 7.

BYD Sealion 7 2026 Philippine prices:

The Sealion 7 is currently offered in a single AWD Performance variant at P2.588 million. However, buyers who opt to finance with the Bank of the Philippine Islands can avail themselves of an all-in down payment of P388,000. That also comes with a free year of comprehensive insurance. This promotion will be offered until June 30, 2026.

BYD Cars Philippines and ACMobility are also offering exclusive deals at the ongoing BYD Tech Tour at the Glorietta Activity Center. Interested buyers have until Sunday, May 31, to visit.

Up front, the Sealion 7 shares a similar nose with its plug-in hybrid sibling, the Sealion 6 DM-i. However, its sharper headlights and DRLs give it a more menacing impression, which is more akin to the fully electric Seal sedan. Overall, these two motifs give the Sealion 7 a sporty and swift look.

Its stance is then elevated by 20-inch rollers, shod in 245/45 R20 tires. The Sealion 7 is also much bigger than its photos suggest. Measuring at 4,830mm long, 1,925mm wide, and 1,620mm tall, it is longer than both the Tesla Model Y and the Toyota bZ4X. The 2,930mm wheelbase adds to its elongated appearance, along with the design lines that run across the doors.

Around back, BYD outfitted the Sealion 7 with two spoilers—one atop the power tailgate with another lip mounted just above the main taillight. There is also a curious ‘4.5S’ badge on the cargo door, which touts the Sealion 7’s supposed 0-100kph 4.5sec sprint. More on that later.

Inside, the Sealion 7 is dressed with leather-wrapped seats and other soft materials on high-touch surfaces. The five-passenger cabin is also covered with soundproof windows, along with a panoramic glass roof.

As with most BYD vehicles, the dashboard is tied together by a large rotating 15.6-inch infotainment display. A smaller 10.25-inch instrument panel complements the main screen, as a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system and ambient lighting setup cover the rest of the interior.

In terms of cargo capacity, the Sealion 7 features a front trunk with 58 liters of space. The main holding area at the back has an initial capacity of 500 liters, which can be expanded to up to 1,769 liters with the rear seats folded.

This fully electric crossover uses an 82.6kWh battery to power its dual motors. While it is an AWD vehicle, the Sealion 7 favors its rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor. Generally, power is split 60% on the rear motor and 40% with the squirrel-cage induction asynchronous motor at the front. Between the metal, the suspension system comprises double-wishbone and multi-link setups on the front and back, along with frequency-selective damping and shock absorbers.

Total power output is rated at 523hp and 690Nm of torque. As its emblems suggest, it can hit the 100kph mark in just 4.5sec, but brand ambassador Nico Bolzico said he broke it 0.3sec faster.

On a full charge, the Sealion 7 is advertised to drive up to 542km. There are also four distinct drive modes to choose from—Economy, Normal, Sport, and Snow—with varying performance levels.

The Sealion 7 has the full DiPilot advanced driver-assistance suite onboard, with features such as adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alerts, driver-attention warnings, and intelligent torque adaptation control. There is also a 360-degree camera system and six sensors to help with parking. A heads-up display has been added to the cockpit, along with cooling seats for the driver and front passenger.

The main screen is equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad is nearby. There are then four more USB ports and a 12V socket for charging. Finally, the Sealion 7 is Vehicle-2-Load-capable, and an adapter is included with every purchase.

During that period, four-wheel-drive trucks and SUVs were special interest vehicles that were enjoyed and appreciated by a select group of enthusiasts...then came COVID-19. Limited human interaction plus lots of disposable income spurred the growth of outdoor activities like camping, off-roading, and overlanding, which piqued global interest in four-wheel-drive vehicles and eventually drove up their prices.

Three to four years after the end of the pandemic, values of classic Land Cruisers have remained on the high end with fine examples of the 40-series trucks hovering around the P2 million mark, further cementing their collectability and legendary status.

A vehicle as legendary as the Toyota Land Cruiser deserves an equally legendary backstory, so let’s go back to 1950 when the United States Army invited Japanese car manufacturers for a bid to produce a four-wheel-drive truck. Toyota for its part submitted the Jeep BJ prototype. Although it did not win the bid, Toyota continued to develop the prototype and further proved its capability by climbing up 2,500 meters to the sixth checkpoint of Mt. Fuji—higher than any motor vehicle had gone—in 1951 with test driver Ichiro Taira at the wheel.

In 1954, mass production of the Jeep BJ officially began. After a claimed trademark violation made by the Willys Corporation (makers of the original Jeep), Toyota would rename it the Toyota Land Cruiser—a name specifically chosen to compete with the Land Rover from the United Kingdom.

In 1955, the ‘J20’ second-generation Land Cruiser was introduced with ‘J’ as the model code for all Land Cruisers built, a homage to the original Jeep BJ. The intention was to make it less agricultural and more appealing to civilians, so it had a more stylish exterior, better ride quality, a more comfortable interior, and astonishingly optional air-conditioning in 1951, opening a whole new export market.

In 1956, the Land Cruiser was the first mass-produced Toyota car to be exported to world markets beginning with Brazil and Saudi Arabia, where it developed a reputation for toughness and go-anywhere capability which it still carries until today.

The now-classic third-generation Land Cruiser J40 was introduced in 1960 along with more modern production techniques, diesel engines, and a low-range transfer case for improved off-road performance. During its 24-year production run, the 40-series was available in three wheelbase options: short (J40/J41/J42), medium (J43/J44/J46), and long (J44/J47). It was also sold with a variety of petrol and diesel engines.

The J40 has now become one of the most iconic Land Cruisers ever built and was the design inspiration for the FJ Cruiser that was introduced in 2006. One look at the Land Cruiser 40 and you know it means business from the boxy Jeep-style silhouette, massive steel bumpers and the ambulance type doors with a chunky swing out spare tire carrier.

The roof was raised from the previous J20, but made of fiberglass to reduce center of gravity. Distinctive features include the curved corner windows and the one-piece fold-down windscreen that gave excellent visibility. The iconic front end features headlights positioned within the grille flanked by large orange rectangular indicators, which until 1969 were actually round units.

The rest of the exterior is just filled with utilitarian details like rubber caps on the hood for holding the windscreen when folded, the external hood hold-down latches, and the heavy-duty exposed door hinges.

The utilitarian theme continues inside with a focus on practicality and durability. There is a lot of exposed metal and vinyl—no soft-touch materials here. Even the floor is covered with a sheet of vinyl allowing for a simple ‘hosing down’ of the interior after a day out off-roading. The layout of the instrument cluster is fairly simple with everything designed to be within fingertip reach, and control knobs are all located on the center of the dashboard for ease of use.

One unique feature of the J40 is the flow-though ventilation to keep the cabin cool. There are two kick-vents by the passenger footwell that allow fresh air in, and the rear pop-out vent windows allow the warm air to escape. While the Land Cruiser 40 interior may be more refined compared to its competitors at that time, there is no mistaking its cabin for anything else but a serious go-anywhere off-roader.

All Land Cruisers from the Jeep BJ until today’s 300 Series all utilize the traditional body-on-frame construction, one of the contributing factors to its toughness. The J40 sports front and rear heavy-duty live axles supported by semi-elliptical leaf springs, greasable shackles, and tubular shock absorbers while steering was done via a mechanical recirculating-ball system with power assistance as an option or a popular retrofit.

There were multiple engines that powered the 40 Series Land Cruisers in its 24-year lifespan. Options for petrol engines were the six-cylinder units from the F-family, while diesel engine choices were mainly from the family of ‘B’ or ‘H’ series engines. Versions of the Mercedes-Benz OM314 or OM364 diesels were also exclusively available in Brazil. Power ranged from 80hp to 135hp through manual gearboxes with three, four, or five speeds; safe to say speed was not the selling point here. Stopping these trucks (which weighed approximately 1,500kg) were vacuum-assisted four-wheel drum brakes which were upgraded to discs in later year models.

The BJ40 and BJ46 Land Cruisers we have here today are part of a seven-car Land Cruiser collection owned by my schoolmate Chris—with the ‘B’ in the model code indicating that these J40s were equipped with the ‘B’ diesel engine. It is a one-owner car having been purchased by Chris’ father brand new from Delta Motors for a princely sum of P175,000 back in 1982. This was the same car that took Chris and his siblings to and from school, and it would eventually be used to navigate the floods of Taft Avenue during his collegiate days.

After graduating, Chris continued to use the J40 for a few years until he decided that something more comfortable with an automatic transmission was better suited for Manila traffic, so the Land Cruiser was handed down to his younger brother who continued to use the car on a daily basis before the family decided to start restoring the car in 2012.

The green BJ46 is a medium wheelbase model; at 2,430mm, its wheelbase is exactly 145mm longer than the J40 models. This car is fitted with a 2B engine that had its displacement increased to 3.2 liters and produces 93hp and 215Nm of torque. It was an unfinished restoration project acquired in 2017 as part of a four-car package of Land Cruiser J40s found in Tarlac.

Chris was able to get two of the four cars and began the simultaneous frame-off restoration of both cars, which were completed in 2020. Both the BJ40 and BJ46 are in immaculate condition as they have been kept as garage queens since being restored and are used mostly on the show circuit or Land Cruiser Club events.

Climbing into the trucks can be a bit challenging given the height and the lack of anything to grab on to. Once seated, the large-diameter steering wheel dominates the view with the seating position being so upright, despite having a lot of room for adjustment. The seats themselves are practically flat, offering little to no support—without even just a head rest.

Starting the J40 brings a sense of nostalgia and is something that today’s generation will probably never experience—turn the ignition to the ‘ON’ position, press the button to heat the glow plugs, turn the key once the glow plug’s indicator turns red, and the big diesel engine comes to life.

The clutch is surprisingly light for an old truck, and finding gears with the shifter takes some getting used to. The power assisted steering is very light, and has a lot of steering wander or ‘wego.’ The suspension on both cars were upgraded with newer Old Man Emu and Rancho units, so it was no surprise that the ride quality was decent for a leaf-sprung short-wheelbase truck.

While power may be decent for city driving, the term ‘relaxed’ comes to mind when on the highway. I can only imagine the wind noise at speed. Coming to a stop and turning off the ignition does not shut down the engine; one will need to turn the ‘engine stop’ knob on the dashboard to close the air inlet and kill the motor. Again, very old school.

Both the BJ40 and BJ46 are noisy, bumpy, and warm. Even Chris wonders how he survived driving these cars on a daily basis for years, but I stepped out of the Land Cruisers with a kind of satisfaction one can only get from driving a classic car.

Toyota Motor Philippines has always had the Land Cruiser in its lineup since the ’90s with the J80 Series, and today offers the 250 Series Prado as well as the 300 Series. Soon, they might be joined by the J240 Series Land Cruiser FJ. An interesting fact: the Philippines is one of the largest markets for the Land Cruiser globally. With enthusiasts like my buddy Chris keeping the legacy going, it is clearly a sign that this model will continue to be loved by generations to come.
