Meet Maggie, PCMag'sAptly named, the LogicMark Freedom Alert Mini is a small wearable medical alert pendant that uses cellular technology to connect you to an emergency response agent with the press of a button. It offers fall detection and GPS location tracking, and it works with a free mobile app that uses geofencing to notify caregivers if you travel outside a predetermined boundary. With a $54.99 device fee and a $34.99 monthly monitoring fee, it’s a bit more affordable than competing devices, even when you add optional fall detection and geofencing support (both $9.99 per month). Most importantly, it works wonderfully, earning it our Editors' Choice award. It shares this honor with the pricier WellCare Today Samsung Galaxy LTE Smartwatch With HealthAssist (starting at $59.95 per month), a smartwatch that offers a more discreet design and numerous health-tracking sensors.
The Freedom Alert Mini is a wearable medical alert device that can be worn on a belt using the included belt clip or as a pendant with the included lanyard. It has a matte black finish, measures 2.5 by 1.5 by 0.62 inches (HWD), and weighs just 1.5 ounces. It has an IP67 weather-resistance rating, which means you can wear it in the shower and the rain.
The Freedom Alert Mini is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery rated to last 24 to 48 hours between charges, but LogicMark recommends charging it every night. It takes around two hours to fully charge the battery using the included charging cradle.
The front of the Mini holds a speaker, a microphone, an LED status light, and an emergency button. The LED is solid red when the device is fully charged, flashes red while charging, flashes blue when fall detection is on, and is solid blue while placing a call to the emergency response center. On the right side is a battery button; press it to hear if the battery is low or OK.

The Alert Mini currently uses AT&T 4G LTE cellular service to connect to a 24/7 emergency response center when the button is pressed, but will also offer Verizon service later this year. It supports two-way communication with emergency response agents, GPS location tracking, fall detection that automatically connects you to an emergency response agent if you can’t press the button yourself, and geofencing, which allows caregivers to create a virtual boundary and receive alerts when you travel outside it.
The Freedom Alert Mini has a one-time device fee of $54.99, and the 24/7 monitoring fee is $34.99 per month. Add $9.99 per month for fall detection and $9.99 per month for geofencing support. That’s still significantly less expensive than what you’ll pay for the Medical Guardian MGMini, which has an initial equipment cost of $149.95 and a monthly monitoring fee of $43.95, plus an additional $10 per month for fall detection. The same goes for the WellCare Today Samsung Galaxy LTE Smartwatch With HealthAssist, which starts at $59.95 per month. That said, the WellCare Today watch offers advanced functionality, such as health tracking that can be shared with doctors and caregivers.
The Alert Mini works with the Connected Care app for Android and iOS devices. The app is basic and not very flashy, but it allows family members and caregivers to track your exact location and see if you’ve sent any alerts. If so, it shows where you were and the time of day when you requested help.
When you log in, the app opens to a home screen displaying your username, device ID, and the device's current battery level. Below that is a caregiver panel showing each person's name and phone number, followed by a panel displaying all emergency calls. Scroll down the page to view a list of alerts, including the date and time for each. Here, tap the small map icon to see where the device was when each alert was triggered.
At the bottom of the home screen are buttons labeled Home, Track, Devices, and Profile. The Home button takes you back to the home screen from wherever you are in the app, and the Track button opens a screen showing your current location on a map. In addition to the map location, it shows your tracker's current status (charging, outside the geofence, and so on) and its battery level. Tap the Device button to view lists of recent alerts and emergency calls and to create a geofence. When creating a geofence, you can choose to set an exit fence alert and an enter fence alert, so caregivers know exactly when you leave the boundary and return home.
Finally, the Profile button takes you to a screen where you can view your name, phone number, email address, and LogicMark user ID. Here you can also reset the app password, set the time zone and language (English, Spanish), and choose which push notifications you want to receive. Choices include SOS (button press), Fall, Low Battery, Enter Fence, Exit Fence, Power On/Off, Charge On/Off.
LogicMark sets up everything before shipping based on the information you’ve provided. It provides a free White Glove Concierge service that walks you through how to use the device, and will follow up three months later to make sure everything is working properly. Additionally, the company will contact you if it notices a stoppage or if there has been no activity for an extended period.
To get started, I fully charged the battery and downloaded the app. My account and the device were preregistered, so once the battery was charged and the device received an over-the-air firmware update, I was ready to go.
The Freedom Mini Alert worked well in my tests. Its average response time (the time it takes to be connected to a live agent after pressing the button) clocked in at 14 seconds, making it one of the fastest medical alert devices we’ve tested. In comparison, the WellCare Today Samsung Galaxy LTE Smartwatch With HealthAssist averaged 20 seconds, while the LifeStation Sidekick Mobile and the ADT On-The-Go systems averaged 35 seconds each.
Exit and enter geofence alerts were accurate and arrived quickly, and GPS location tracking worked as intended, pinpointing my exact location on a map. Two-way communication with response agents was loud and clear, and the agents were always professional and courteous.

It can be comfortably worn around your neck with a lanyard or attached to your belt, and it can automatically contact an emergency response agent if you fall and are unable to press the button yourself. With GPS tracking and geofencing alerts, caregivers and family members can use the free app to keep track of your whereabouts at all times and view recent alerts. You have to pay extra for fall detection and geofencing, but that’s not uncommon with these devices, and the Freedom Alert Mini is still well priced. For all of these reasons, it earns an Editors’ Choice award for medical alert systems alongside the WellCare Today Samsung Galaxy LTE Smartwatch With HealthAssist, which costs more but is sleeker and offers more advanced functionality.
