    Interviews really are a gold mine. But only if you actually know how to extract the gold... I see this mistake a lot in UX. Teams do interviews, collect some emotional quotes, and then jump straight to conclusions. It feels like insight. But most of the time it’s just storytelling built on selective memory and gut instinct. The hard part of interviews isn’t talking to users, it’s analyzing what they tell you in a way that doesn’t quietly reinforce your own assumptions. Coming from cognitive psychology into UX, what surprised me is how similar the foundations really are. Psychology goes deep and slow, building theory from interviews and lived experience. UX has to move fast, turning research into product decisions. But the core discipline is the same. Systematic coding, pattern detection across the full dataset, and constant validation against the raw transcripts. If you skip that step, interviews don’t become insight, they become anecdotes. ⚫ Thematic analysis is still the workhorse. That’s the process of coding transcripts, finding real patterns across participants, refining themes, and checking everything again before writing conclusions. ⚫ Grounded theory is what you lean on when you truly don’t know what’s going on yet and need the model to emerge from the data instead of from your roadmap. ⚫ Phenomenological approaches matter when you’re working in emotionally sensitive spaces and individual lived experience can’t be flattened into averages. ⚫ Linguistic and narrative analysis help catch the emotional signals and experience flows that simple theme counts can miss. ⚫ Content and sentiment analysis help scale insights when you’re working with large volumes of qualitative data. What strong UX research usually does is mix these approaches. Start inductive so you don’t miss what you didn’t expect. Validate deductively so you don’t fool yourself. Then translate the analysis into practical tools like affinity maps, personas, and journey maps so teams can actually act on the insights. Interviews are incredibly powerful, but only when they’re treated as data, not as stories we selectively retell. As I always say, rigor isn’t an academic luxury, It’s how we keep UX research honest, practical and reliable!

    Stop pasting interview transcripts into ChatGPT and asking for a summary. You’re not getting insights—you’re getting blabla. Here’s how to actually extract signal from qualitative data with AI. A lot of product teams are experimenting with AI for user research. But most are doing it wrong. They dump all their interviews into ChatGPT and ask: “Summarize these for me.” And what do they get back? Walls of text. Generic fluff. A lot of words that say… nothing. This is the classic trap of horizontal analysis: → “Read all 60 survey responses and give me 3 takeaways.” → Sounds smart. Looks clean. → But it washes out the nuance. Here’s a better way: Go vertical. Use AI for vertical analysis, not horizontal. What does that mean? Instead of compressing across all your data… Zoom into each individual response—deeper than you usually could afford to. One by one. Yes, really. Here’s a tactical playbook: Take each interview transcript or survey response, and feed it into AI with a structured template. Example: “Analyze this response using the following dimensions: • Sentiment (1–5) • Pain level (1–5) • Excitement about solution (1–5) • Provide 3 direct quotes that justify each score.” Now repeat for each data point. You’ll end up with a stack of structured insights you can actually compare. And best of all—those quotes let you go straight back to the raw user voice when needed. AI becomes your assistant, not your editor. The real value of AI in discovery isn’t in writing summaries. It’s in enabling depth at scale.     Let's face it: most user interviews are a waste of time and resources. Teams conduct hours of interviews yet still build features nobody uses. Stakeholders sit through research readouts but continue to make decisions based on their gut instincts. Researchers themselves often struggle to extract actionable insights from their conversation transcripts. Here's why traditional user interviews so often fail to deliver value: 1. They're built on a faulty premise The conventional interview assumes users can accurately report their own behaviors, preferences, and needs. People are notoriously bad at understanding their own decision-making processes and predicting their future actions. 2. They collect opinions, not evidence "What do you think about this feature?" "Would you use this?" "How important is this to you?" These standard interview questions generate opinions, not evidence. Opinions (even from your target users) are not reliable predictors of actual behavior. 3. They're plagued by cognitive biases From social desirability bias to overweighting recent experiences to confirmation bias, interviews are a minefield of cognitive distortions. 4. They're often conducted too late Many teams turn to user interviews after the core product decisions have already been made. They become performative exercises to validate existing plans rather than tools for genuine discovery. 5. They're frequently disconnected from business metrics Even when interviews yield interesting insights, they often fail to connect directly to the metrics that drive business decisions, making it easy for stakeholders to dismiss the findings. 👉 Here's how to transform them from opinion-collection exercises into powerful insight generators: 1. Focus on behaviors, not preferences Instead of asking what users want, focus on what they actually do. Have users demonstrate their current workflows, complete tasks while thinking aloud, and walk through their existing solutions. 2. Use concrete artifacts and scenarios Abstract questions yield abstract answers. Ground your interviews in specific artifacts. Have users react to tangible options rather than imagining hypothetical features. 3. Triangulate across methods Pair qualitative insights with behavioral data, & other sources of evidence. When you find contradictions, dig deeper to understand why users' stated preferences don't match their actual behaviors. 4. Apply framework-based synthesis Move beyond simply highlighting interesting quotes. Apply structured frameworks to your analysis. 5. Directly connect findings to decisions For each research insight, explicitly identify what product decisions it should influence and how success will be measured.
