You may have heard people say the 150-hour rule is gone. That’s not quite what’s happening. What’s actually happening is more interesting. The profession is moving away from 150 hours being the only path to becoming a CPA. Back in May 2025, the AICPA and NASBA amended the Uniform Accountancy Act to allow an additional pathway: Bachelor’s degree Two years of professional experience Passing the CPA exam In early 2026 we’re starting to see states put that pathway into practice. New Jersey’s alternative pathway officially went live on February 11. Texas is implementing its new pathway as well, with an August 1, 2026 effective date and rulemaking underway right now. More than 27 states have already passed some form of pathway or mobility legislation. So the real shift isn’t that the 150-hour rule suddenly disappeared. It’s that the profession is moving toward multiple paths to licensure. And the debate is already changing. The question is no longer “should alternative pathways exist?” It’s whether firms, educators, and regulators are ready to train and support candidates under this new model. If you’re pursuing the CPA right now, the key thing to remember is this: The pathway may evolve. But the exam, the skills, and the professional standard behind the license still matter just as much!
