France just did something clever. Orange Business launched "Drone Guardian" : basically turning 19,700 telecom towers across the country into a nationwide counter-drone detection grid. It's Europe's first anti-drone-as-a-service offering. The idea is elegant. You already have towers everywhere. You already have power and connectivity. So why not mount detection sensors on them and create coverage at a scale no one else has tried? But here's where it gets interesting. The system relies heavily on RF-based detection. That works great for commercial drones broadcasting their signals. It works less great for the drones that matter most : the ones that are autonomous, GPS-guided, or fiber-optic-controlled. What if you added passive acoustic sensors to that same infrastructure? Same towers, same power, same connectivity, but now you can hear drones that don't talk. Solar-powered microphone arrays running edge AI, detecting threats by their acoustic signature regardless of whether they emit RF. France has built the backbone. This year, U. S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) has been heavily focused on countering UAS attacks (cUAS). This should not come as a surprise, given our experience over the past 12 months: Iranian-backed militia groups have launched hundreds of one-way UAS attacks on US and partner forces in Iraq and Syria, and the Houthis have launched hundreds of their own UAS into the Red Sea with devastating effect on maritime traffic. In January of this year, three of our team members were killed in a UAS attack on Tower 22. This threat is front-of-mind for everyone at the Command. For that reason, it has never been more important to drive experimentation with cUAS capabilities. Just last week CENTCOM's Army component executed RED SANDS, a series focused on testing cUAS defeat systems with realistic heat/sand/wind/humidity/users to ensure those systems work as they should. This week, we're executing DESERT GUARDIAN, a series focused on forcing different systems to integrate and function together. Over the coming year, we'll execute more RED SANDS and DESERT GUARDIAN events to peek pushing these capabilities forward. Every day this week, I'll be sharing more about how we think about the cUAS problem set and the lessons we're learning from DESERT GUARDIAN. We'll kick off the week with the graphic below, explaining how we think about the different parts of the cUAS problem, and each day I'll do a deep-dive into each piece. DETECT: We must be able to detect potentially threatening objects in our airspace This challenge can become increasingly complex depending on the size, speed, distance, and altitude of the object. FUSED DETECT: No one sensor will ever give us 100% coverage - we need "layered defense" with multiple mixed sensors. That means our sensors must share their data into a single third-party interface. CHARACTERIZE: We must be able to determine whether an object is "hostile" or "non-hostile" in our airspace. Additionally, we need high quality locational data ("fire control quality") to help us shoot it down. DEFEAT: We must be able to neutralize threats in our airspace (with kinetic or non-kinetic means). This challenge can look different depending on whether we are defending a fixed location or mobile team, or what type of system we are trying to defeat. FUSED DEFEAT: As with sensors, no one shooter will ever give us 100% defeat - we require "layered defense" with multiple shooter, which need to be integrated into a common command and control interface so we don't overwhelm users. UAVs are transforming the counter-battery kill chain. German Quantum Systems recently integrated acoustic sensors into their Twister, Vector and Reliant ISR drones. The system can record the sound signatures of 122mm and above artillery rounds at a distance of up to 15 km, with a localization accuracy of ±5°. Russian artillery crews are understandably panicking on Telegram. The sensor, weighing less than 50 g, was developed by Polish Weles Acoustics (acquired by Quantum in 2024). It operates in the range of 20 Hz - 10 kHz and is integrated with onboard neural networks to classify weapons by acoustic profile. While the prototype is undergoing field tests, serial production is scheduled for July 2025. The future concept would involve the acoustic sensor cueing the drone's onboard camera in the direction of the sound, in which its CV models would take over via target detection. In this case, the Vector UAV is currently using the Raptor gimbaled sensor, with an optical and thermal imaging channel, which has a zoom of 40x and 8x, respectively.

One of the most important lessons from Ukraine is this: sensing must scale economically. Ukraine has developed acoustic sensors capable of detecting FPV drones by their sound signature including fiber-optic drones that are invisible to RF detection and resistant to electronic warfare. The range per node is modest. But that’s not the point. The point is architecture. Each acoustic station costs roughly $500. For the price of a single radar system, you can deploy thousands of acoustic nodes, creating dense distributed sensing networks across frontlines, infrastructure, and logistics routes. This fundamentally changes the cost equation. Radar remains critical but radar alone is not enough. Low-altitude drones, terrain masking, clutter, and fiber-optic control create sensing gaps. Acoustic sensors fill those gaps by providing passive, resilient detection that cannot be jammed or easily targeted. They do not replace radar but complement it. Modern defence sensing is no longer about single exquisite sensors. It is about layered, distributed, economically scalable detection architectures. 🚁 Distributed Autonomy + Radar Intelligence in Drone Swarms In this simulation, I demonstrate how a swarm of autonomous drones can cooperatively search, detect, track, and neutralize a dynamic target — without any central controller. Each drone operates with its own directional radar, limited field-of-view, and noisy measurements. Individually, their perception is imperfect. Collectively, it becomes powerful. Here’s what’s happening under the hood: ✅ Distributed radar-based area coverage ✅ Probabilistic target detection under SNR and beam-pattern constraints ✅ Multi-sensor fusion for precise localization ✅ Confidence-driven mode switching (Search → Focus → Hunt & Destroy) ✅ Cooperative containment geometry for safe engagement ✅ Fully decentralized decision-making When a single drone detects a target, it shares its estimate. As more radars observe the same object from different angles, localization uncertainty collapses through geometric diversity — just like in real multi-static radar networks. Once collective confidence crosses a threshold, the swarm automatically transitions from exploration to coordinated pursuit and encirclement. No “master” drone. No centralized planner. Just local intelligence + communication + control. This kind of architecture is highly relevant for: • Defense and surveillance • Airspace security • Search-and-rescue • Law Enforcement • Large-scale robotic systems And it’s a great example of how signal processing, estimation theory, control, and AI come together in real systems. The system, called Vega, functions as an onboard radar guidance and targeting system, allowing drones to detect and track aerial targets independently. 📡 𝗔 𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 According to the developers, the Vega radar can detect small drones such as DJI Mavic platforms at distances of up to around 100 meters with high accuracy. The radar can reportedly distinguish drones from birds or moving foliage and can also detect ground objects such as vehicles and even people. ⚙️ 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 The radar module weighs less than 200 grams and consumes roughly 5 watts of power.
