“Let’s celebrate our differences!” — easy to say when you’ve never actually had to WORK through real differences. Here’s the thing: Real differences don’t feel like a celebration. They feel messy, uncomfortable, even threatening. 🧠 Our brains are hardwired to detect difference as potential danger. When someone thinks, works, or communicates differently than we do, our first instinct isn’t to embrace it—it’s to resist it. Recently, I worked with a team trapped in conflict for years. The problem wasn’t competence or commitment. It was cognitive diversity they didn’t know how to handle. 👉 One part of the team was task-focused—eager to get to the point and skip the relational aspects of collaboration. 👉 The other part was relationship-driven—prioritizing emotional connection and dialogue before diving into action. Celebrate their differences? Not likely. 🚫 The task-focused group saw the others as emotionally needy attention-seekers. 🚫 The relationship-driven group saw their counterparts as cold and disengaged. So, what changed everything? Not a shallow celebration of their diversity, but finding their common ground. 🚀 I used my D.U.N.R. Team Methodology to transform their conflict into collaboration: 1️⃣ D – Diversity: we explored their differences without judgment and recognized the strengths in both approaches. 2️⃣ U – Unity: we found their shared purpose—every one of them cared deeply about the team’s success, just in different ways. 3️⃣ N – Norms: we co-created practical norms that guided their interactions and set clear expectations. 4️⃣ R – Rituals: we introduced rituals to honor both styles while reducing friction and fostering collaboration. You just need to go an inch. The smallest, low-cost gestures can have a massive impact on customers, turning ordinary transactions into memorable experiences. The secret - search for the asymmetry between cost and impact. Going the extra inch requires minimal effort and often costs next to nothing. It could be a handwritten note, a smile, a gesture of personal recognition, a small act of kindness. But the effect on customers is profound. It creates emotional connections, fosters loyalty, and makes customers into advocates. The irony - while everyone is busy trying to “go the extra mile,” it is the extra inch that nets you miles of customer loyalty. THE I.N.C.H. FRAMEWORK To master the art of the extra inch, use this simple yet powerful framework: I – Identify Moments of Truth: Look for touchpoints where expectations are neutral or low. These are prime opportunities to surprise and delight. For instance, when I got my car serviced at the Lexus dealership, they washed and vacuumed the car and left a red carnation flower on the dash. I have told more than 10,000 people about the 50-cent carnation. How’s that for ROI? N – Notice the Little Things: Train employees to observe and remember small details about customers—preferences, moods, or special occasions. At the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai, I asked for a memory foam pillow. Every time I stay there, they put a memory foam pillow on my bed. Instant reactions destroy clarity. Regulated responses create it. 2) Separate the message from the emotion. Ask yourself: What part of this feedback is valuable? What’s not? Self-awareness turns defensiveness into insight. 3) Assume positive intent, even when it’s hard. Most people aren’t trying to attack you. They’re trying to be heard. This mindset shift can transform high-performing teams. 4) Get curious, not combative. Say: “Help me understand what you’re seeing.” Questions lower tensions; curiosity opens doors. 5) Take ownership of your part. I’ve found myself navigating meetings when a colleague or team member is emotionally overwhelmed. One person came to me like a fireball, angry and frustrated. A peer had triggered them deeply. After recognizing that I needed to shift modes, I took a breath and said, “Okay, tell me what's happening.” I realized they didn’t want a solution. I thought to myself: They must still be figuring out how to respond and needed time to process. They are trusting me to help. I need to listen. In these moments, people often don’t need solutions; they need presence. There are times when people are too flooded with feelings to answer their own questions. This can feel counterintuitive in the workplace, where our instincts are tuned to solve, fix, and move forward. But leadership isn’t just about execution; it’s also about emotional regulation and providing psychological safety. When someone approaches you visibly upset, your job isn’t to immediately analyze or correct. Instead, your role is to listen, ground the space, and ensure they feel heard. This doesn't mean abandoning accountability or ownership; quite the opposite. When people feel safe, they’re more likely to engage openly in dialogue. The challenging part is balancing reassurance without minimizing the issue, lowering standards, or compromising team expectations. There’s also a potential trap: eventually, you'll need to shift from emotional containment to clear, kind feedback. But that transition should come only after the person feels genuinely heard, not before. Timing matters. Trust matters. If someone is spinning emotionally, be the steady presence. Be the one who notices. Allow them to guide the pace. Then, after the storm passes, and only then, you can invite reflection and growth. This is how you build a high-trust, high-performance culture: one conversation, one moment of grounded leadership at a time.

One of the quiet truths about being human is that we are extraordinarily good at getting used to things. The new job. The promotion. The bigger house. The long-awaited milestone. For a while, they thrill us. Then, almost imperceptibly, they become normal. Psychologists, I believe, call this Hedonic Adaptation viz. the tendency of our emotional state to return to a baseline despite positive or negative changes. In simple terms, what once felt extraordinary or catastrophic at some point once again feels ordinary. This explains a paradox we see everywhere. A young professional dreams of a certain role for years and finally gets it. Yet, within months, the restlessness is back. A company achieves market leadership and quickly the celebration gives way to anxiety about what’s next. Even setbacks follow a similar arc where the pain is intense, but rarely permanent. Our minds are built to normalize. From an evolutionary perspective, this is a feature, not a bug. Constant excitement would exhaust us and permanent despair would paralyze us. So the psyche tries to recalibrate. The extraordinary reverts to become the norm. This is closely related to Relative Comparison where we measure ourselves not in absolute terms, but against new reference points. Once you are in the top quartile, you start comparing with the top decile and so on. The goalpost keeps moving. Organizations adapt just as individuals do. Yesterday’s breakthrough becomes today’s benchmark. Yesterday’s competitive advantage becomes today’s table stakes. Without conscious renewal, success quietly breeds complacency. So what can be done? The intent is certainly not to stop ambition which is necessary, but instead to stop outsourcing happiness entirely to future milestones. Three practices could help counter hedonic adaptation: 1. Re-sensitising through gratitude Deliberately noticing and being grateful for what is being taken for granted, whether it is health, relationships or the privilege of meaningful work, does slow down the numbing effect of familiarity. 2. Shifting from outcome to process When identity is anchored only in outcomes, adaptation can be ruthless. When meaning is drawn from learning, contribution and living a full life, satisfaction becomes less fragile. 3. Creating intentional pauses. Rituals of reflection, be they annual reviews, milestone journaling or even quiet walks help us register transitions instead of sleepwalking through them. Hedonic adaptation is why external success, by itself, can never be a stable source of inner fulfilment. But, it is also why humans are remarkably resilient. So, maybe the solution lies in a balance: Keep striving ,fully aware that every summit will, one day, feel like flat ground. And yet, keep remembering that what feels “normal” today was once a dream.

But here’s the truth → Problem-solving under stress is not a “talent.” It’s a trainable skill. And the candidates I coach who master it often walk out with multiple job offers. Let me break it down with no-fluff, expert-backed techniques that actually work: 1️⃣ Rewire Your Stress Response with the 4-7-8 Reset When your nervous system panics, your prefrontal cortex (the problem-solving part of your brain) shuts down. Before answering, use the 4-7-8 breathing method: Inhale for 4 sec Hold for 7 sec Exhale for 8 sec This activates the parasympathetic system → instantly reduces cortisol and gives you back cognitive control. 2️⃣ Switch from “Answering” to “Framing” Research from Harvard Business Review shows that candidates who frame the problem out loud sound more confident and buy time to think. Instead of jumping straight in, say: “Let me structure my approach — first I’ll identify the constraints, then I’ll evaluate possible solutions, and finally I’ll recommend the most practical one.” This shows clarity under stress, even before the solution lands. 3️⃣ Use the MECE Method (Consulting’s Secret Weapon) Top consulting firms like McKinsey train candidates to solve under pressure using MECE → Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive. Break the problem into 2–3 distinct, non-overlapping buckets. Example: If asked how to improve a delivery app → Think in “User Experience,” “Logistics,” and “Revenue Streams.” This keeps you structured and avoids rambling. 4️⃣ Apply the 30-70 Rule Neuroscience research shows stress reduces working memory. So don’t aim for perfection. Spend 30% of time defining the problem clearly and 70% generating practical solutions. Most candidates flip this and over-explain, which backfires. 5️⃣ Rehearse with Deliberate Discomfort Candidates who only practice “easy” questions crash in high-pressure moments. I make my students solve case studies with distractions, timers, or sudden curveballs. Why? Because your brain learns to adapt under chaos and that resilience shows in interviews. 👉 Remember: Interviewers aren’t hunting for perfect answers. They’re hunting for calm thinkers. Most transformations I’ve been part of have had a moment when something felt off, long before anyone could point to a missed milestone or a scary dashboard. I just re-read a great Harvard Business Review piece by Andrew White, Adam Canwell, and Michael Smets on this issue: the early “turning points” in change efforts. Their research highlights something I’ve seen often in my own work: The earliest warning signs of trouble are emotional. You see it in small, very human ways: - Teams that used to speak up go quiet. - People look confused but don’t ask questions. - Energy that was once high becomes flat or tense. These are the moments that matter but leaders often skip past them because they seem “soft” or hard to measure. The article’s data and my own experience point to the same conclusion: If you pay attention to these emotional cues and act early, you can steer the transformation back on track. If you ignore them, the real problems show up later, and they’re much harder to fix. Resentment builds fast!
