Quick reality check: → 6M+ retail outlets → ₹17,100 crore revenue (FY24) → ₹1,607 crore profit → 100+ crore packets sold every month → Presence in the remotest villages + 21 countries The real shock? Parle-G hasn’t increased the ₹5 price in 25+ years. While others chased margins, Parle chased reach. While brands fought for visibility, Parle built availability.     Yesterday I walked past our local Aesop store and they had over $930 of free sample products on display out the front, literally on the street for anyone to try. So I did the maths… There were seven 500ml/17oz bottles of beautiful hand lotions of varying cost, so the average retail price for each was $94. Aesop has around 500 stores globally & many of them only offer three sample bottles - so we can average it out to 5 bottles per store. That means at any one time all their stores combined have just over $235,000 worth of storefront samples on display. The lovely sales associates told me they replace these bottles on average every 3 weeks. So if that’s happening at every location, each year Aesop is giving away just over $4 million worth of storefront samples (obviously this costs them less because they don’t pay retail for their own products). And that’s not even counting all the other free samples they offered me in-store - including creams, serums, hand washes, balms, massage oils and lots more in those little sachets. I watched people stop, pump the lotion, smell their hands and then walk in to buy it. This happened over and over again. It was a great reminder that in today’s world of endless digital content, social media advertising, influencers, EDMs, SMS marketing & paid search - sampling trumps them all. There is still no better way for a brand to convert new people into paid customers than by offering free samples.

    Are you also falling into the “Samples Deathtrap”? #climatetech startups aiming to replace fossil-based commodities with green-based solutions often find themselves caught in a harmful cycle I call the “samples deathtrap.” Eager to showcase the potential of their innovations, these startups often comply with the incumbents' requests for samples. What starts as a small ask ("1 gram") quickly balloons ("Now we need 100g", "Next, 1kg", "This batch had an after-taste/smell; send another"...). This never-ending escalation consumes precious resources without ever progressing to a firm purchase commitment. Caught in this loop, startups risk everything, sacrificing time and funds, hindering their ability to mitigate risks, and diminishing their chances for successful fundraising. How to Overcome the Samples Deathtrap? There's no silver bullet, but one thing is clear: continuing to please customers with endless samples is a surefire path to your startup's bankruptcy. Consider these strategies to break the cycle: 1️⃣ Price Strategically: Never give samples for free. In fact, price them at a premium. This ensures only seriously interested parties, those who have gone through the necessary budget approvals, will request them. And resist the temptation to offer discounts; it only leads to expectations of more. 2️⃣ Limit Quantities: Set firm limits on sample quantities to force a decision point. Create a sense of FOMO; if they don't act, someone else will benefit from your "green gold." 3️⃣ Demand Action: Before shipping any samples, require LOIs that outline a path to commercialisation. These should specify the purpose of the samples, the criteria for success, and the next steps if tests are successful. This approach ensures that both parties are committed to a potential future partnership, not just a free trial. 4️⃣ Cut the Gordian Knot: Consider not sending samples at all. Instead, leverage your network to connect with the top executives of incumbent companies and convince them to agree to large orders ("offtakes"), conditional on you delivering quality products. This approach flips the traditional process, prioritising commercial agreements before sampling. With such commitments in hand, you strengthen your position for future fundraising efforts. After spending years building feedback loops, here's what I've learned: Feedback isn't about collecting data. It's about creating change. Most companies fail at feedback because: - They send random surveys - They collect scattered feedback - They store insights in silos - They never close the loop The result? Frustrated customers. Missed opportunities. Lost revenue. Here's how to build real feedback loops: 1.     Survey response rates: the most common challenge I hear in demos. But honestly, it’s not the customer’s fault. It’s yours. Let me explain. Example 1: You want to survey people who took a test drive but didn’t buy. You send them an email or SMS. Response rate? Zero. Of course, they’re not your customers yet. Why would they bother? Try this: Don’t send a survey. Call them. Have a real conversation. Example 2: You’re a new bank. Your customers are retired professionals aged 60+. You send them a feedback email. Will they reply? Unlikely. Try this: Use WhatsApp. Then call. (We’ve seen surprising response rates on WhatsApp in this segment.) Example 3: You’re an NBFC, and your customers are in Tier 3/Tier 4 cities. And you send… an email? Try this: WhatsApp. Then call. Example 4: You’re an airline, and you send a survey 2 weeks after the flight. Do you think they even remember the experience? If you want better response rates: --Be in your customer’s shoes --Choose the right channel for your audience --Ask at the right time --Most importantly, don’t let feedback sit in a dashboard.     How Reliable Are Your Offline Recommender System Tests? New Research Reveals Critical Biases Offline evaluation remains the dominant approach for benchmarking recommender systems, but researchers from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais and University of Gothenburg have exposed fundamental reliability issues in how we sample data for these evaluations. The core problem: users only interact with items they're shown (exposure bias), and evaluations typically use only a sampled subset of items rather than full catalogs (sampling bias). These compounding biases can severely distort which models appear to perform best. The Framework The research introduces a systematic evaluation across four dimensions: - Resolution: can the sampler distinguish between competing models? - Fidelity: does sampling preserve full evaluation rankings? - Robustness: do results remain stable under different exposure conditions? - Predictive power: do biased samples recover ground-truth preferences? Key Technical Findings Using the KuaiRec dataset with complete user-item preferences, the team simulated multiple exposure policies (uniform, popularity-biased, positivity-biased) at varying sparsity levels (0-95%), then tested nine sampling strategies including uniform random, popularity-weighted, positivity-weighted, and propensity-corrected approaches like WTD and Skew. The results challenge conventional wisdom. Larger sample sizes don't guarantee better evaluation-what matters is which- items get sampled. Under high sparsity (90-95%), many samplers produce excessive tie rates between models, losing discriminative power. Bias-aware strategies like WTD, WTDH, and Skew consistently outperformed naive baselines, maintaining stronger alignment with ground truth even under severe data constraints. Perhaps most striking: even the "Exposed" sampler (using all logged items) showed degradation under biased logging, while carefully designed smaller samples often proved more reliable. Practical Implications For practitioners: your choice of negative sampling strategy fundamentally impacts which models you'll select. The research suggests prioritizing methods that account for exposure patterns, particularly in sparse data regimes. The paper's code and complete experimental framework are publicly available, enabling teams to audit their own evaluation pipelines.

When you’re swimming in data, it’s tough to decide what to act on, and there’s always the risk of analysis paralysis. Here’s how you manage it: → Define the building blocks of useful feedback: Prioritize feedback that aligns with your brand’s goals or messaging architecture. Not every suggestion needs action—focus on trends that impact customer experience or growth. → Close the loop publicly: When customers see their input being acted upon, they feel heard. Announce product improvements or service changes driven by customer feedback. It builds trust and strengthens emotional resonance. → Involve your team in the loop: Feedback isn’t just for customer support or marketing—it’s a company-wide asset.     For a long time, the golden rule in UX research was simple: just test 5 users, and you will catch 80 percent of usability issues. It made sense in early usability testing when the goal was catching obvious bugs or severe blockers. But today, UX research often asks bigger questions. We explore subtle user preferences, test multiple design variations, predict market behavior, or validate critical flows in products where mistakes can cost millions. Suddenly, 5 users do not seem enough anymore. As UX research matured, so did the need for smarter ways to plan sample sizes. Recent years have brought more advanced methods that help researchers move beyond rough estimates. For instance, adapted statistical power analysis for UX allows us to calculate sample size based on expected effect sizes, even when working with small or noisy samples. Bayesian approaches are gaining traction too, offering flexible sample planning that updates based on incoming data, letting you stop early when enough certainty is reached. Sequential and adaptive sampling strategies are another exciting development, especially for usability studies or preference tests. Instead of setting a fixed number in advance, you continue collecting data until you achieve a desired confidence level, making studies faster and more cost-effective. Risk-based models are also changing how researchers think about participant numbers. Instead of focusing only on detecting problems, they consider the business or design risk of making a wrong decision, adjusting the sample size based on how much uncertainty you can afford. Another growing trend is mixing qualitative and quantitative sizing in adaptive ways. Some frameworks now combine early qualitative saturation analysis with quantitative validation stages, offering a dynamic approach where the study evolves based on what you learn. All of these methods offer something critical that the old "5 users" rule does not: they match the sample size to the research goal, the risk involved, and the complexity of the product. If you are running a simple early discovery study, small samples still work well. But if you are testing pricing sensitivity, final designs, or behavioral metrics that inform big decisions, modern UX research demands more. It is an exciting time because we now have access to Bayesian calculators, sequential stopping rules, risk modeling tools, and mixed-methods planning guides that make our studies not just bigger, but smarter.

    “25 samples” is not best practice anymore. Better sampling approaches are. In SOX testing, I still hear: “It’s a daily control — pick 25 samples.” But here’s the truth 👇 25 is not magic. It’s a fallback. That number comes from legacy IIA guidance and Big 4 non-statistical sampling tables — meant for a time when testing more wasn’t practical. Today, better options exist. The real question isn’t 25 vs 40. It’s how much assurance are we really getting? Here’s what’s actually better than fixed 25-sample testing 👇 1. Risk-Based Sampling (better than fixed 25) Instead of: “This is a daily control → pick 25” You do: -Identify high-risk periods (quarter ends, year end, spike months) -Focus on judgmental samples, not purely random -Sample fewer items, but risk-relevant items 👉 Example Instead of 25 random JEs: -Pick 12–15 JEs -All from quarter-end, manual postings, unusual users 📌 Better assurance than 25 random samples 2. Stratified Sampling (Big 4 preferred) Population is split into risk buckets, then sampled. Example for payments: -High-value payments → test 100% -Medium-value → sample a few -Low-value → minimal or none 👉 Result: Total samples may be less than 25 But coverage of material risk is higher 📌 This is explicitly supported by Big 4 and IIA guidance. 3. Data Analytics / 100% Population Testing (BEST) This is the gold standard and the real answer to your question. Instead of sampling: -Run analytics on 100% of the population -Identify exceptions -Then do targeted follow-up testing Examples: 100% JE testing for approvals, posting time, users 100% payment testing for duplicate, override, threshold breaches 📌 When you test 100%, the question of “25 vs 40” disappears. Sampling exists only because we can’t test everything and Analytics removes that limitation. 4. Fully Automated Controls (No sampling) If a control is: Fully automated and No manual intervention is required If Strong ITGCs in place 👉 You don’t need 25 samples. 👉 You test design + configuration. This is explicitly supported by: IIA ,PCAOB and Big 4 SOX methodologies So what is “BEST” instead of 25? 🔥 Best-practice hierarchy 1. 100% population testing via analytics 2. Risk-based / stratified sampling 3. Judgmental sampling focused on high-risk periods 4. Fixed 25 samples (only when above aren’t feasible) A strong line you can confidently use (review-proof) “We didn’t select 25 samples. We applied risk-based sampling supported by analytics to obtain higher assurance than traditional sampling.” That line works with: -Audit committees -External auditors -Big 4 reviewers -PCAOB logic So yes — 25 samples is acceptable.
