    Your N8N automation breaks at 3am. You have no idea why. You spent hours building the perfect workflow. Connected your triggers. Mapped your fields. Everything looked green. But when data flows through… 💥 It explodes. Here's what happened: Your form trigger captured "Email" (capitalized). Your webhook captured "email" (lowercase). N8N sees these as two completely different variables. So when your workflow hits the Google Sheets node expecting "Email"... But receives "email" instead → Red error messages → Broken automation → Lost leads I've seen this kill workflows for businesses pulling in £100K+/month. The fix to this is the Edit Fields node. Here's what you do: 1️⃣ Add an "Edit Fields" node right after EVERY trigger 2️⃣ Map all variables to the same format (I use all lowercase) 3️⃣ Rename everything consistently: "email", "name", "phone" Now it doesn't matter if the data comes from: Your form (Email) Your webhook (email) Your CRM API (EMAIL) It all gets normalized to the same format. Here’s an example: Before normalization: ❌ Form sends "Email" → Sheets expects "email" → Error After normalization: ✅ Form sends "Email" → Edit Fields converts to "email" → Sheets receives "email" → Success This single step prevents 90% of workflow failures. AND always normalize data BEFORE it hits your main workflow. Set it once. Never worry about capitalization breaking your automations again.     Ready to stop chasing clash issues that shouldn't exist?   I will tell you today about my most irritating IFC export mistake I see over and over again.   Placeholders and duplicate objects all over the place.   Here's what happens: • Architect models a sink, plumber models the same sink. • Same structural beams modelled by both architect and engineer. • Walls, toilets, columns, lightnings fixtures - all that are shared responsibility building elements.   Result? Hundreds of phantom clashes that waste coordination time.   The fix isn't complex - it's about agreeing on the responsibility.   Create a Model Development Matrix that defines: • Which discipline owns which objects • When placeholders become permanent • How to filter objects from IFC views • Clear handoff points between teams   Without clear rules, everyone models "just in case." Result? Federated chaos and fake conflicts.   Pro tip: Use "placeholder" categories in your authoring software and filter them out before export.     My Website Chatbot was not working properly for 2 weeks, and I didn't know... If you are using AI Agents in #n8n you might have encountered this issue. When an AI Agent calls a tool (e.g. Supabase vector database) and the tool breaks (e.g., an API returns an error), the workflow doesn't stop, but still returns a successful run. The reason behind this is that the Agent often sees that error message as just text input. It thinks, "Oh, the tool said 'Error', I should tell the user I couldn't do it." Because the Agent handled it (by apologizing to the user), n8n sees the whole execution as "Success" (Green), even though your tool technically failed. Here is the best way to get notified when this happens. Solution: The "Sub-Workflow" Strategy Instead of building the tool logic directly in the main agent flow, move the tool's logic into its own separate workflow. 1. Create a New Workflow for your tool (e.g., "Tool: Get Customer Data"). 2. Add an Error Trigger node to this new workflow. 3. Connect the Error Trigger to a notification node (Slack, Email, Discord). 4. In your Main Agent Workflow, use the "Call Workflow" tool definition to use that sub-workflow. Why this works: If the tool crashes (Red node), the sub-workflow's Error Trigger will instantly fire and notify you. The main Agent will receive the error message and can still apologize to the user gracefully. Have you experienced this issue before? Write down your biggest horror story 🤣

    We had 4-5 parallel worker processes picking jobs from a MySQL table. But we noticed the parallelism was inefficient. Only one process was doing the work while the others were simply waiting due to db locks. After investigating, we found it was due to the gap-locking mechanism with the SELECT ... FOR UPDATE query in MySQL. We run SELECT ... FOR UPDATE to fetch specific rows in each worker. This will lock specific rows and thus the another worker can pick the next set of rows. But instead of locking just those specific rows, MySQL locked several other rows because of "gap locks" and "next-key locks". MySQL does this to prevent something called phantom reads. 👉 What are phantom reads? A phantom read happens when:- - Transaction A reads rows that match a condition. - Transaction B inserts new rows that match that same condition. - Transaction A reads again and finds new rows. These are the "phantoms." - To prevent this, MySQL uses gap locks to lock not only the selected rows, but also the gaps between index records. This means other transactions can't insert new rows into those gaps during the transaction. 👉 Why did this affect our workers? Because of gap locking, when one worker locks rows with SELECT ... FOR UPDATE, it also locks adjacent gaps. Other workers trying to lock different rows might be blocked if their target rows fall into these locked gaps. This could be solved by adding a UNIQUE index for the table, or by implementing a distributed locking mechanism using Redis.     Tales from the trenches: Micro-services are #ops nightmare if #devs don't [want to] know production reality. I've seen many projects based on the pattern of "workflow": A workflow is a suite of several synchronous or asynchronous operations on internal (micro)services and external services triggered by a call. And #dev, when implementing this pattern, are not aware of potential incidents in production. 1️⃣ Permanent Errors A workflow is failing, but where? Begin the game of retracing the flow of calls one by one, but : - Logs are incomplete or not homogeneous - Among thousands of requests per second in production - The queue system (for instance #celery) is difficult to introspect (you have to send Redis commands to check queue states) - Tracing is not enabled or not coherent (for instance it is difficult to trace a whole asynchronous workflow if observability is not implemented) 2️⃣ Random Errors Same as before, but the bug appears randomly without explanation. Support is overwhelmed by reported issues, but there's no way to backtrace the problem. After hours lost trying to reproduce the bug, you finally know how to trigger the bug. Go back to the first case and cry. 3️⃣ My Favorite One: Replaying Workflows in Error You've found the bug and realize thousands of workflow instances have been interrupted. - How can you collect all these workflows? (I've seen cases where identifiers were changed or lost during workflow propagation, making this operation non-trivial.) - How do you reinsert specific messages into queues and hope they execute cleanly to finish their execution ? Usually, You also have to insert changes directly in the database, reproducing your workflow execution with dirty SQL requests while looking at people dancing in the street because it's Friday night. 🕺🕺🕺 I've encountered these problems so many times that I've concluded if you REALLY want to implement this pattern, you need: - Idempotency of operations - Traceability - History - Replayability All these features are available and/or enforced by Temporal Technologies (love you guys, you're the best). Start adopting it now, or keep debugging your own food. What are your solutions to handle workflows ?
