Striving for work-life harmony is a much more realistic and sustainable approach. 🌟 Work-life harmony doesn't mean juggling equal time between work and personal life. It's about creating a rhythm where these aspects complement and support each other instead of competing for attention. Here's how you can achieve it: 1. Boundaries with Purpose: Clearly define when work starts and ends. Set limits on emails and calls outside those hours, allowing you to engage in personal activities without work distractions fully. 2. Prioritization Power: Prioritize tasks based on impact and deadlines. When you're at work, focus on high-impact tasks so you can be present for personal time, knowing you've tackled the essentials. 3. Flex Your Way: Embrace flexibility in how and where you work. Some days might be better for early mornings, others for late nights. Flexibility keeps you productive while accommodating personal needs. 4. Mindful Transitions: Create a routine that helps transition between work and personal time. It could be a short walk, a few minutes of meditation, or even playing a favorite song that signals the shift. 5. **Blurred Lines:** Embrace the overlap between work and personal life. How do you effectively disconnect from work? It's Sunday, and have the so-called "Sunday Scaries" hit you? Are you already thinking and perhaps stressing about the week ahead? If so, you're not alone. Research from the University of Exeter has found that the blurring of boundaries between work and home life is one cause. Finding ways to switch off is essential, but often hard. Over the years, I have had to really work at this. Switching off has not come easy. Here are seven tips that have helped. 🎆 Tip One - Schedule tomorrow Before you finish your working day, write down what you want to achieve at work tomorrow. Outlining your tasks and scheduling your workday in advance helps stop you from ruminating about everything you need to do tomorrow. ⌛ Tip Two - Have rituals Much of what we do each day is a habit, a regular pattern of behaviour. Establish a routine that signals to your brain that your working day has finished. It might be getting out of your work clothes, meditating, switching your phone to silent, listening to a podcast or calling a friend. 🚦 Tip Three - Set boundaries You need to establish two types of boundaries: those with yourself and those with your boss and work colleagues. If you consistently work long into the evening and answer emails late at night, you create a pattern of behaviour for yourself and those around you. Discuss boundaries with your colleagues and boss and agree on the protocols for handling calls and emails outside set work hours. ⏰ Tip Four - Find the off-switch It's always easy to be 'on', so use technology to help you switch 'off'. Have your phone automatically switch to 'do not disturb' and turn off social media push notifications and email alerts at set times. 🎊 Tip Five - Book time for fun Plan and schedule regular events in your calendar that force you to leave your work desk and not burn the midnight oil. These could be art classes, catching up with a friend, or attending a community activity. These activities not only help you switch off but also help you maintain balance and connection. 🎽 Tip Six -Shake it off In the iconic words of Taylor Swift – Shake it off. Exercise is one of the best things you can do to leave your workday behind. Get the blood pumping and those endorphins zinging through your body, and you'll leave your workday behind. 🏆 Tip Seven - Celebrate your progress Developing new workplace habits takes time and effort, so be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress. Finding work-life balance is honestly a constant struggle for me. It's not just a casual remark; I genuinely struggle with it. Despite my difficulties, I'm committed to maintaining a healthy balance between work and life. Here are a few strategies I've found helpful: - Clearly defining my work and personal time. I've set strict hours for work during the week, like from 7 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday. Anything outside of those hours is strictly reserved for personal time. - Making a conscious effort to limit the time I spend on work-related tasks when I'm at home. If my laptop is open, there's a temptation to dive into work, so I try to keep it closed unless absolutely necessary. - Managing my work-related activities on my phone is a major challenge. It's far too easy to get sucked into responding to emails or checking on work-related matters. I'm working on setting boundaries and limiting work-related use of my phone. - I prioritize filling my non-working hours with activities, especially ones that involve spending time with my family. With young kids, it often means shuttling them to various activities like ballet class and swim lessons, but I try to make sure we have quality time together as a family. - Having a supportive spouse who understands my struggle and helps keep me accountable is a huge asset. After 15 years, here are 3 ways I conquered it: 1. Set Boundaries - Set clear boundaries between work and personal life. - Establish specific working hours and stick to them. - Communicate this to anyone you work with. This helps create a structure and prevents work from seeping into your personal time. 2. Prioritize Self-Care - Block time for activities unrelated to photography. - Schedule regular breaks and vacations. - Realising self-care is productive too. Self-care is not selfish; it's necessary for sustainable creative output. 3. Delegate and outsource - Make a list of non-core activities in your business - Find professionals who can handle them more efficiently - Delegate tasks that don't require your direct involvement Now you'll have more time and energy to focus on your creative pursuits.
