    Most websites think they're optimized until Googlebot hits a wall. Broken links, redirect chains, blocked assets, outdated sitemaps, or a misconfigured robots.txt file can prevent search engines from accessing key pages. These issues waste crawl budget, break internal linking, and reduce index coverage. And that means fewer pages in search results, weaker topical authority, and lower rankings. Crawl errors come in two forms: site-level (like DNS failures or server timeouts) and URL-level (like 404s, soft 404s, or blocked resources). They often show up as HTTP status codes (404, 503), noindex directives, disallowed folders, or mismatched canonicals. Each of these errors disrupts how bots move through your site, and if left unresolved, they can lead Google to deprioritize your content altogether. The fix starts with visibility. Use Google Search Console to inspect individual URLs and review crawl stats. Then run a full technical audit with Semrush. Its site audit tool will highlight broken links, 5xx errors, redirect loops, blocked assets, and conflicting directives. From there, clean up internal links, eliminate redirect chains, correct robots.txt issues, and make sure your sitemap only includes valid, indexable pages. If you’re not auditing regularly, crawl issues pile up. Technical SEO isn’t just backend housekeeping: it’s foundational to visibility. Search engines can’t rank what they can’t crawl.     Analyzing over 6,000 sites for the December Core Update we find a clear link between site experience, site authority and site quality: 1. Site Experience Matters We saw clear correlations between sites with high ads-to-content ratio and sites with poor CWV and performance losing during the December core update 2. Sitewide Quality Matters Sites with too many thin pages suffered. We use % of pages < 500 words of content as a proxy for measuring "sitewide site quality" and found that sites where <7% of pages have 500 words or fewer saw more stability than sites where 32% or more content was deemed thin 3. Site Authority Matters We measure site authority across our network using some 3rd party api endpoints but we also measure % of branded search volume via GSC and found that it's predictive of success. Above 4% branded search clicks: Sites showed stronger resilience and lower downside risk Below 0.5% branded search clicks: Sites were much more likely to underperform 4. Content Freshness Matters We know this already but the correlation is clear in our analysis. Across our sample set, winning pages had an average “content freshness” of 393 days compared to 500 days for losing pages. Mostly this reinforces things we've been advocating for across our network.     You will greatly improve your SEO strategy and results if you are able to map out structure. Multi-level structures in particular. Look at the main nav for clues on major sections. Reference the home page and even the XML sitemap(s) as well bc sometimes the main nav can miss something! And as always, find your Wayfair (read my full post on this: https://lnkd.in/enXij5eM) With an understanding of the major sections that should make up the site, map them out in detail. It's common to have simple 2-level structures but if there's a chance to go beyond, that's where this gets really powerful (and important). Here's a great example: multi-location businesses. One of the major sections will be the locations themselves. Start with a hub page for these: "Locations." This should link to counties (optional) and cities. Next, move on to the second level. This *can* be the county level (I often like to do this to add more structure) but should certainly be the city level. Ex: Roofing contractor in Evansville, IN On to the third level. Roofing includes repair, installation, replacement, and maintenance. Ex: Roof repair in Evansville IN, roof installation in Evansville IN, etc. Do this for all cities and services. Point internal links in both directions and consider breadcrumbs. Whether you're a multi-location business, a wedding venue site, e-commerce, etc., this best practice - of mapping out structure - keeps your site tightly organized, easy to interpret, and crawlable. Plus, you'll send targeted signals for a far greater number of queries versus trying to have single pages doing all the heavy lifting (i.e., trying to rank for too many terms). If you spot the opportunity, make this a priority - you'll see big results.
