Our team spent the past nine months collaborating with dozens of Microsoft 365 #Copilot customers to analyze the work habits of more than 6,000 employees -- one of the largest telemetry studies of its kind to date. We split employees into two groups: one with access to Copilot and the other without. And three major trends emerged.     1. AI is starting to liberate people from email. Overall, employees at a consumer goods company with access to Copilot spent 31% less time reading emails, a time savings of 50 minutes a week per user. At a telecommunications company, employees spent 23% less time, saving 40 minutes per week. 2. Meetings are becoming more about value creation. The workday is often a balancing act between crucial meetings and focused work. And with AI, some companies are reducing time spent in meetings, and others are making the time spent in meetings more valuable. People using AI at a consulting firm spent 16% less time in meetings. An energy company saw a 12% increase in the number of meetings being left early, suggesting that people may feel comfortable bowing out because they can use Copilot to get meeting notes, ask questions, and check on action items. 3. People are co-creating more with AI—and with one another.  Human-to-AI-to-human collaboration fosters better human-to-human collaboration, reducing the time it takes to get from good to great. One consumer goods company saw a 41% boost in the number of Word sessions, while at a law firm and a telecom company, Word document creation soared by 58% and 45%, respectively. Employees with access to Copilot at a financial services company co-edited 33% more documents than those without AI, and a consulting firm saw a similar effect.      Learn more in our latest #AI Data Drop here!

Today marks the end of 2025's first half. What word best describes the latest six-month progression of work and workplace? Dramatic. In the half ending today: ✅ Agentic AI Upended Knowledge Work - Autonomous Task Completion now handles complex workflows, from drafting reports and coordinating meetings to conducting research and managing emails, all without a human scanning search engines. - Many work roles shifted from execution to oversight and decision-making. Employees now focus more on setting intent, verifying outputs, and strategic thinking. - Agentic AI tools are now our collaborators, with names and functions (e.g., “Quill” for content generation or “Scout” for market research), often integrated into teams and chat platforms. ✅ The Workplace Became Wherever You Happen to Be - Offices and other gathering venues serve as collaboration hubs for periodic in-person meetings, not daily work. - Workplace as a Service venues host workers with “on-demand” workspace such as coworking spaces, hotel lounges, or VR meeting rooms that are funded by employers. - Time Zone Fluidity is a thing as teams operate across the globe, leveraging asynchronous tools and AI-driven meeting summarization to stay aligned. ✅ Work Turned Modular and Measured by Outcomes - Projectized Workflows mean that tasks are increasingly broken into discrete, AI-supported “modules” managed through platforms like Notion, Asana, or custom GPT-based systems. - Output and impact now matter more than effort or hours logged, with AI providing fine-grained productivity metrics and nudges. - Career professionals are ditching résumés in favor of digital portfolios and productivity dashboards to showcase their AI-augmented work and decision records. ✅ Lifelong Learning Became Continuous and AI-Augmented - With Just-in-Time Learning, career professionals employ conversational AI tutors to up-skill on the fly, whether learning a new coding language, understanding legal clauses, or prepping for a negotiation. - Skill over Degree: Employers increasingly assess by demonstrable skills, not education pedigree, supported by AI-verified micro-credentialing platforms. ✅ Human-Centric Design Arrived - Companies are adopting Mental Health-First Policies that are AI-curated to encourage “wellness load balancing;” such agents recommend when talent should take breaks, log off, or defer meetings. - Neuroinclusive Workspaces are on the rise: tools and environments are increasingly tailored for one's cognitive needs, with AI recommending personalized task modes (e.g., text, visual, verbal). - Work Fit: Instead of enforcing work-life separation, many organizations help employees blend work into life with more flexibility and choice so that work becomes a wonderful part of the day doing other wonderful things. In 2025, we'll work with AI co-workers in digital workplaces like Slack.   Salesforce just announced its vision for Slack as the central hub for human-AI collaboration. I think this vision makes sense because the best tech fits naturally into our daily workflow.   Instead of context-switching between tools, we'll chat with AI co-workers where we already spend our day. We'll delegate tasks for AI agents to manage 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, tasks like:   ▶ Summarizing meetings ▶ Drafting documents and communications ▶ Handling repetitive administration   Let's explore what this means for HR professionals:   1️⃣ We should start with research on virtual human-human collaboration to understand human-AI collaboration.   We've learned valuable lessons about trust, communication patterns, and team dynamics in virtual teams. Because our interaction with AI in Slack will be similar to how we interact with people remotely, these insights will help us design better human-AI workflows.     2️⃣ We need new frameworks on what makes human-AI collaboration different.   However, current research on virtual teamwork assumes human-to-human interaction. We urgently need studies on the nuances of how humans and AI work together effectively.     3️⃣ HR pros will need to develop new AI skills.   HR professionals must identify high-value use cases and design AI behaviors that enhance human work rather than replace it. Customizing AI agents for specific workflows will become a core competency.     What are some other implications of the AI workplace? How are you preparing your organization for AI colleagues?
