Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.

Summary

Portfolio projects for early-career engineers are practical, hands-on creations that showcase real skills and problem-solving abilities to employers, helping candidates stand out beyond what’s listed on their résumé. Building a portfolio with meaningful, industry-relevant work can open doors to jobs and internships by highlighting both creativity and expertise.

  • Choose real impact: Pick project ideas that solve genuine problems or serve specific industries, rather than repeating generic examples seen everywhere.
  • Showcase your process: Clearly explain the motivation, design decisions, and learning behind each project, using a clean portfolio site and detailed documentation.
  • Share strategically: Publish your projects on LinkedIn, GitHub, and your portfolio site, then connect with recruiters and professionals to make your work visible.

In my junior year of college, a Google recruiter told me that none of my portfolio projects stood out... I thought “building a portfolio” meant uploading a few code snippets and calling it a day... She showed me what real portfolios actually look like, and how top candidates quietly bypass the resume pile. Since then, I’ve helped thousands of students use this same system to land internships and New Grad offers at top AI companies. Here’s the play: 1. Pick a portfolio project that turns heads. Forget Titanic datasets and MNIST. Try one of these instead: - Fine-tune a real open-source LLM - Implement a research paper from scratch - Build a RAG pipeline with your own data These are what hiring managers actually get excited about. 2. Don’t just build, showcase it like a pro. Spin up a clean portfolio site (no need to code from scratch) And walk through: - Why you built it - The architecture and tradeoffs - What you learned Make it skimmable but technical. 3. Optimize for recruiters AND engineers. That means: Buzzwords for ATS ✅ GitHub links ✅ Clean formatting ✅ Deep README ✅ This is what I call your Second, Invisible Resume...it works for you even when you're not actively applying. 4. Stop cold applying. Start attracting. Once you’ve got the right project + positioning: - Turn it into a LinkedIn post - Add it to your profile - DM engineers at your dream companies It’s not about going viral... It’s about being impossible to ignore.

𝗜 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲. Their answers changed everything. I used to think any project on my resume was better than nothing. So I built a to-do list app, a calculator, a weather tracker—you know, the usual. Then I asked recruiters from Amazon, Meta, and Google what projects they instantly ignore. Their response? “If we’ve seen it 100 times before, we skip right past it.” Here’s what they told me not to put on my resume: ❌ To-do lists ❌ Calculator apps ❌ Basic CRUD apps with no real-world impact ❌ Portfolio websites (unless you’re a designer) ❌ Copy-paste tutorial projects 𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁? Recruiters want to see projects that show real-world impact, problem-solving, and creativity. ✅ 𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝗜-𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿 – A tool that scans job descriptions and suggests resume optimizations. ✅ 𝗔 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 – Helping them adjust pricing during off-peak hours to boost revenue. ✅ 𝗔 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 – Aggregating user feedback and behavior for product teams. ✅ 𝗔𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹 – Something that saves time or reduces manual effort in a business process. ✅ 𝗔𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹, 𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 – If a company can see how your project could be useful, you’re already ahead. The best projects aren’t the ones that showcase your coding skills—they’re the ones that showcase your ability to solve real problems. If your portfolio projects aren’t getting you noticed, it’s time to build something that actually matters. What’s the best project you’ve built?

Your school projects don’t have to stay in school. Make them the foundation of your dream career. When I first started building my portfolio, I thought showing everything I could do was the way to impress. So I added all kinds of projects, hoping variety would catch attention. But over time, I realized that wasn’t enough. Your portfolio isn’t just a collection of random projects — It’s a message about the kind of work you want to do. Even if your projects come from different classes or have different goals, you can make them work for you by aligning them with the industries or roles you want. For example: ➡️ If you’re going to design a logo for a class assignment, make it for a sports team, gym, or nutrition brand, if that’s the industry you want to work in. ➡️ If you’re building a website as a project, create one tailored to an athletic brand like Gymshark or a fitness startup. This way, you’re showing intentional work that speaks directly to the clients or employers you want to attract. If you want your portfolio to open doors: → Dig deeper into the projects you care about and shape them around your target industry → Expand on them to reveal layers of thinking and expertise → Highlight work that aligns with the roles or clients you want next → Make every piece purposeful — tell a story about your strengths Your portfolio is more than past projects and random classwork. It’s your future career blueprint. Start building it intentionally. Showcase what you want to do next. Make your portfolio work for you. Looking for a job? Build a portfolio. Not just a résumé. If I were job hunting in 2025, here’s what I’d do. Build ONE great portfolio project in the next 30 days. Something that shows - not tells - your skill, thought process, and creativity. I say this as someone who's also hired half a dozen people in the past 2 years. There's too much noise out there. You've got to find a way to stand out. Here are 3 roles and 3 portfolio projects you can build in the next 30 days to stand out: 👩🏽💻 1. Product Manager Build: A new feature for an app you love → Pick a product (Spotify, Notion, Duolingo) → Design a new feature: user problem → solution → wireframes → Write a PRD (problem, KPIs, edge cases, success metrics) One of the most creative ways I've seen a friend get an interview was this: He mocked up a "Spotify Social Listening" feature - then sent it to Spotify PMs. This got him an immediate response and interview. Tool stack: Notion, Figma, Canva, ChatGPT, Whimsical 📱 2. UX/UI Designer Build: A 2-week redesign challenge → Pick a real-world flow that sucks (e.g. booking train tickets on IRCTC lol or the entire Goodreads web app) → Interview a few users (just ask around within your friends) → Redesign the flow with better UX → Share your case study on Behance or your website Write a post on the entire process you followed. Tool stack: Figma, Maze, Framer, Medium 📊 3. Data Analyst Build: A dashboard + case study → Choose a public dataset (NYC taxi data, Netflix ratings, upcoming Indian startups) → Clean + analyze it using SQL/Python → Build a dashboard in Tableau or Power BI → Publish your insights + charts as a case study Once again, write a post on the entire process you followed. Tool stack: SQL, Python, Tableau, Canva, Medium ... It's easy to get stuck in the rut of applying to jobs every day. Try something a tiny bit different... and you can easily stand out from the noise. Best of luck! 🌿 Found this useful? Repost it to help someone who’s job hunting. 🟢 Want a free guide to acing your first PM interview? Comment below “portfolio” below and I’ll send it over. :)

Everyone says they ‘know DSA’. Everyone lists 5 programming languages. But when recruiters ask — “Show me something you’ve built?” Silence. In 2025, resumes aren’t enough. Your projects are your proof of skill. They reflect your logic, design thinking, debugging ability, and curiosity. Whether you're preparing for on-campus, off-campus, or aiming for your first dev job — projects make you stand out. Here’s how I started building real-world projects as a student: 1. Pick real problems (not just portfolio ones): • Expense Tracker • Student Course Planner • Food delivery clone • WhatsApp web clone with WebSockets • File-sharing app using WebRTC • Blog platform with Auth & CRUD 2. Start small, but finish what you start. Consistency > complexity. 3. Learn public. Build public. Post on GitHub, share on LinkedIn, ask for feedback. Tech stack ideas (Freshers friendly): • Frontend: React, Next.js • Backend: Node.js, Express, Django • DB: MongoDB, PostgreSQL • Auth: Firebase / Auth0 • Hosting: Vercel / Netlify / Render Some great resources to get started: • Frontend Mentor – UI Challenges • Build with Code – Beginner-friendly builds • Fullstackopen – Full-stack learning • App Ideas GitHub Repo – Project ideas • Roadmap.sh – Skill maps for dev roles Pro Tip: Make a portfolio site — even if it's simple. Include: • About Me • Projects with GitHub + live links • Blog/learning journey • Contact Remember: • One strong project > 10 unfinished ones • Projects show your intent, not just your potential • Your work should speak even when you’re not in the room Build. Ship. Repeat. Follow Abhay Singh for more such information.

𝐌𝐲 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Can a machine tell the difference between Fall Out Boy's music before and after the band's hiatus? 🎶🤔 Spoiler: it 𝘤𝘢𝘯 – and building a logistic regression model from scratch to prove it taught me so much about 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬. Here’s the real journey behind the project: 👉 Data Engineering: pulling song and lyric data from Spotify and Genius APIs 👉 Data Cleaning: wrestling with messy, imperfect text data 👉 Data Visualization & Analytics: finding hidden patterns in musical features and lyrics 👉 Machine Learning: training, testing, and fine-tuning logistic regression, SVM, and Random Forest models 👉 Evaluation & Storytelling: presenting results that made the data (and FOB’s evolution) come alive ✨ Lesson: You don’t need a massive company dataset to build something real. Start with your passion + curiosity, and the skills will follow. “But I don’t have any experience… what do I even put in my portfolio?” If you’re a fresher this post is your cheat code. 💡 Here’s what I’ve learned from reviewing 100+ fresher portfolios: You don’t need experience you need evidence. If you can show your skills, explain your process, and prove your potential, you’ve already beaten 80% of applicants. Here’s how you can create a strong portfolio even if you’re starting from zero: 5 Portfolio Tips for Freshers (Save this!) 🔹 1. Add College Projects or Assignments Did a group project, research report, or design task? Include it with a short summary show your thought process, not just the final output. 🔹 2. Create a “Passion Project” Write a blog. Build a simple website. Design a mock brand. Doesn’t matter if it’s for a client what matters is that you built something. Passion speaks louder than experience. 🔹 3. Include Freelance or Volunteer Work Did you help a friend with their resume? Edited reels for a cousin’s startup? That counts. Showcase it like a pro. 🔹 4. Document the Journey Don’t just show results. Explain: • What was the challenge? • What tools did you use? • What did you learn? 🔹 5. Use Free Tools to Make it Shine No fancy software needed. Try: • Canva (for beautiful layouts) • Notion (for personal portfolios) • Google Drive (simple & neat folders) Add a 1-page “About Me” that explains your strengths, interests, and values. Make it personal this is your story. Comment “Portfolio” and I’ll send you: A portfolio template A real example from a student who landed a great internship A checklist to review your own portfolio before applying Let’s stop saying “I don’t have experience” And start saying, “Let me show you what I can do.” #PortfolioTips #FresherSupport #EarlyCareerMoves #StudentPortfolio #ShowYourSkills #InternshipReady #LinkedInForStudents #CareerStarter #BuildInPublic #PassionProjects #PortfolioPower #FresherInternships #InternshipHacks #ResumeTips #LinkedInInfluencer #YouthOpportunities #InternshipSearch #CareerTips #DesignYourFuture #WorkSamples #InternshipIndia #NoExperienceNoProblem #YoungProfessionals #StudentResources #CareerPortfolio

In 2026, resumes alone won’t cut it anymore. You need to show your skills. Not with some “next Facebook” idea. But by turning real, everyday problems into portfolio-worthy projects. Here’s how I’d do it if I were starting from scratch today: 1️⃣ Find a problem you see every day Missed appointments. Messy notes. Group chats that go nowhere. Job apps with zero feedback. Simple > impressive. 2️⃣ Write the bare bones What does this thing need to do? Just features. No fluff. 3️⃣ Pick a vibe Color scheme optional but helpful. Choose a style. Airbnb clean? Notion minimal? Spotify bold? 4️⃣ Ask AI for a PRD Use ChatGPT by OpenAI or Claude by Anthropic to turn your idea into a clear product requirements doc. Congrats, you’re thinking like a PM now. 5️⃣ Prototype fast Use Figma AI to mock it up and tweak UX/UI without overthinking. 6️⃣ Build the first version Use tools like Lovable to get a working version fast. 7️⃣ Make it yours Download the repo. Open it in Cursor. Use Claude Code, Roo Code or Microsoft Copilot to refactor, add features, and clean things up. That’s it. That’s a real project. That’s portfolio proof. If you want my list of project ideas + hacks to make them stand out, comment “project” and I’ll send it over.
