Germany is pushing forward the "greenest of green" concept for rooftops: Solar green roofs. The Federal Cabinet in Germany has recently approved the draft of an action program that may result in a whopping financial support of 4 billion € for solar green roofs over the coming years: https://lnkd.in/dyd6nZgQ The additional costs compared to a conventional roof, which arise when installing a green roof in combination with photovoltaics (PV) or solar thermal energy (ST), are to be funded. Funding will be made available both for existing and new rooftops. And there are also strong regulations coming up, many cities in Germany are preparing for a "solar green roof obligation", Berlin for example proposing this duty to take effect from 2027: https://lnkd.in/dWEJZgYV My colleagues Tommy Engvik and Fabian Schroffenegger were last week in Berlin for the "World Green Infrastructure Congress", where about 1000 delegates from all over the world met up to discuss trends and opportunities with green infrastructure in and on buildings. We displayed the vertical solar unit for green roofs from Over Easy Solar - the VPV unit is especially suitable for retrofitting on existing green roofs and for combining with sedum mats on new extensive green roofs. Only in Germany, about 9 million square meters of green roofs are being built every year. If we covered that surface with our solar units, it would add almost 1 gigawatt of solar capacity every year, generating about 1 billion kWh per year of clean electricity for the German power grid ⚡ Why is Germany pushing this? Due to climate change, they are experiencing more extreme rain events, and also more hot and dry summers. Green roofs provide water retention, reduces the high temperatures and brings more nature, life and well-being into the cities. Solar panels provide local energy and is essential to bring down the carbon footprint of energy production. Many people I speak to don't know what a green roof is yet - now it's time to learn. Government-Funded Solar Panel Installation Programs
Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.
Summary
Government-funded solar panel installation programs are initiatives where public funds are used to support the setup of solar energy systems for homes, businesses, and communities. These programs aim to make solar power more accessible and affordable, encouraging wider adoption of clean energy.
- Explore grant opportunities: Look into federal, state, or local grants that can cover a significant portion of solar installation costs, especially for rural areas or low-income neighborhoods.
- Understand eligibility requirements: Check the specific qualifications and application processes for each solar program to ensure you maximize your chances of receiving funding.
- Monitor policy changes: Stay updated on government policy shifts and new funding schemes, as leadership changes or legislative updates can impact the rollout and benefits of solar programs.

During our takeover of the SunCast Podcast Live lounge at RE+, we seized the opportunity to ask our audience of solar installers: How many of you received IRA money outside of the standard 30% tax credit? How many of you have a plan for accessing the billions of dollars available through Solar for All and REAP grants? Not a single person raised their hands. That's why I brought Sean Garren DeKrey, Chief Program Officer at Vote Solar and Corey Ramsden, VP of Go Solar Programs at Solar United Neighbors to discuss how to access those billions of dollars. Tune in to learn: ✅ The expanded benefits of the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant and how it can reduce project costs by up to 50%. ✅ How the $7 billion Solar for All program is being rolled out across the country. ✅ Strategies for installers and developers to navigate the complexities of grant applications. ✅Why compliance with federal guidelines, such as Davis-Bacon and Build America Buy America Act, can be a competitive advantage. NEW: "City First and DC Green Bank provide $5.3 million for solar power for DC’s low-income neighborhoods," via Roodgally Senatus on ImpactAlpha. The budget bill signed into law by Trump last week accelerates phase-outs to clean energy tax credits and “repeals” a Congressionally mandated green bank program. Clean energy developers are rushing to get projects online to take advantage of the federal Investment Tax Credit before it expires. Making the news: Washington, DC-based CDFI City First Enterprises has inked a line of credit with DC Green Bank to support Evergreen Companies' District Solar project, which will create access to clean electricity for roughly 335 households, mostly in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. “The arc of the evolution of clean energy adoption in the communities we serve will continue,” City First's Oswaldo Acosta tells ImpactAlpha. City First and DC Green Bank, which allocated about $2.6 million each for the seven-year term loans, are expecting the project to deliver a 60% annual reduction on households’ electricity bills over 20 years. This week, Rajasthan approved one of the biggest solar power parks of ~3 GW in its Bikaner & Phalodi districts. But there is something bigger coming nationwide... 𝐏𝐌-𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐲𝐚 𝐆𝐡𝐚𝐫: 𝐌𝐮𝐟𝐭 𝐁𝐢𝐣𝐥𝐢 𝐘𝐨𝐣𝐚𝐧𝐚 PM Modi's visionary scheme for installing rooftop solar in 'One Crore households,' with over INR 75,000 Crores in subsidies, is set to be one of the biggest missions to install solar on rooftops by any country. It is also a potential money spinner for many industry players if implemented efficiently. However, there are two things to watch: 1. Mohan Lal Khattar was appointed as the new Power Minister, and Pralhad Joshi was sworn in as the Minister of New and Renewable Energy in Modi’s third term. Both have replaced RK Singh, a former Indian bureaucrat who was previously leading the implementation of this scheme. How this change will impact the scheme will be key to watch. 2. This is not the 1st attempt but the 3rd to install solar panels across the country at a mass level, following the Solar Rooftop Scheme of 2014 and PM KUSUM in 2019. In both schemes, hopes were very high but faced massive hurdles, and the Modi government failed to reach anywhere near the desired outcome. Any change or abandonment of the scheme isn't expected, as giving 'One Crore solar rooftops' was an election promise and was aggressively advertised during the national election campaign by the BJP. We conducted a critical evaluation of the scheme recently, which is becoming relevant today as Modi 3.0 is all set to press the pedal soon.
