I recently met with a professional leader who handed me a sharp business card. Logo. Address. Phone. Then I saw the email: businessname@gmail.com. Don’t do this. Your email is often your first impression. A Gmail, Yahoo, or AOL address makes your business look like a side hustle, not a trusted brand. A professional domain is simple, affordable, and signals credibility. It shows you take your business seriously. Small step, big difference.

If you are already an independent consultant or are thinking about becoming one, I HIGHLY recommend you DO NOT use your Gmail address as your email address for your work. It can be tough to land new opportunities as a consultant, and if you and someone else are being considered for a project, you will be that much more likely to be selected if you have a professional email address. It signals to the prospective client that you take this seriously and have invested in yourself and in your craft. A domain name and email address are not as cost-prohibitive as they once were. Take the time, make yourself look as professional as possible, and increase your odds of landing the next project. Added benefit: look good, feel good, am I right? You don’t need to overthink it—just clean it up and make sure you’re putting your best foot forward. Little details like this can make a bigger difference than you’d expect.
