Here's why: The phrase itself creates a false dichotomy - as if work and life are two separate things that need to be balanced against each other. But life isn't binary. It's holistic. Think of life as a circle with multiple segments: - Work - Family - Health - Relationships - Personal growth - Creativity - Rest - Community - Learning - Spirituality Here's the key: each of these areas provides unique nutrients for your life that you can't get anywhere else. Under-engaging in any area means missing essential experiences. Over-focusing on one area depletes the others. The quality of your life and by extension, the lives of those around you depends on meaningful engagement across all these dimensions. Work isn't separate from life - it's one part of it.     Work-life balance isn't about splitting your time 50/50. Here's what nobody tells you. I spent 10 years trying to "balance" everything perfectly. 8 hours work. 8 hours life. 8 hours sleep. Like a robot programmed for equality. It nearly broke me. Because life doesn't work in neat little boxes. Some weeks, your daughter needs you at every doctor's appointment. Some weeks, a clinical trial is failing and needs your full attention. Some weeks, you're just trying to survive. The truth about balance? It's not daily. It's seasonal. Here's what I learned after 10+ years in clinical research: THE OLD WAY: → Equal hours every day → Rigid boundaries → Guilt when work bleeds into life → Shame when life interrupts work → Exhaustion from trying to be perfect THE REAL WAY: → Some days are 70% work, 30% life → Some days are 20% work, 80% family → Clear priorities for each season → Communication with everyone involved → Grace when things don't go as planned I remember when my wife had our second child.     How to balance work and life? To be honest, I don’t think I did this very well in my initial years as I was all work and little life. But after kids, I had to redefine and strike a new balance. And to get that balance, I need a system that works. So here’s sharing my system: 🎁I timebox. For instance, I will start work at 8am and end by 7pm. I will eat and play with my kids from 7pm to 8pm and put them to bed by 10pm. Thereafter, this is followed by some me-time where I will catch up on reading on latest news etc. The trick is to manage your time well so that you do not feel overwhelmed with any activity at one point in time and you are able to allocate a certain amount of time for the things you want to do. 🤹♀️I prioritise fiercely. Not everything is equally important and urgent, and you need a methodology for prioritising so that you do not feel burnt out because things are stacking up. For example, in my line of work, there are new problems, new challenges and new opportunities every day - the list is never-ending. To avoid being overwhelmed or stressed, prioritise by knowing how to apply the 80-20 rule (pareto principle) and effectively focus your energy on the 20% of activities that generate 80% of the results. Prioritising will help you cope with workload and stress levels. I also practice the Eisenhower Matrix of using urgency and importance to gauge priority. 💪🏻 I have a strong support system. We can���t do it all if we have no one to delegate certain key duties to when needed. Hence, establish a support system in your spouse, family, helpers and friends. This can also be a mental support system too. 💆🏻♀️I make sure that I have time for myself. As a working mum, it is so easy to be consumed by everything and feel burnt out as we are always rushing around doing things for other people. Having my own time and space allows me to have different experiences which can trigger inspiration for building new products or simply move me along in a positive way. Work-life balance is not just about balancing; it is also about carving out important time for yourself so that you would not feel overwhelmed. So go for that massage, facial or exercise, it is about how you can have a holistic life fulfilling the multiple roles in your life and still have the energy to carry on every single day with passion and joy. ⏱️I optimise. Though I timebox, I am also open to squeezing in time creatively and appropriately. For instance, today, I will need to camp here for the whole day as I wait for my kid for his training tournament but I have brought my laptop to catch up on some work. Where I don’t have work, I will squeeze in some self care during these waiting slots. What do you think ? Any other tips for time management?     Work-Life Balance: Unwillingness to Work or the Key to Sustainable Productivity? The debate around work-life balance is never-ending... Yet again, a US-based Indian CEO has remarked on the "unwillingness" of Indian engineers to work, even when offered salaries of ₹1 crore for 3–8 years of experience. It makes me wonder: ✅ Do we work only for money? ✅ Or do we work to enjoy the benefits of the money we earn? ✅ Should we work tirelessly in our early years to reap benefits later? ✅Or should our professional and personal life co-exist? Don’t get me wrong—I firmly believe in hard work. My work is my priority, and I give it my 1000%. But should it come at the cost of my happinrss, health, peace, and relationships? NO. From experience, I know there are times when work takes precedence, and other times when family does. But ensuring that this doesn’t become a regular pattern has helped me maintain a healthy work-life harmony. How do I try to achieve this harmony? 1️⃣ Setting clear work-life boundaries 2️⃣ Learnt to say ‘no’ to non-essential tasks 3️⃣ Delegating effectively 4️⃣ Prioritizing deep work over long work hours 5️⃣ Taking breaks to refresh your mind 6️⃣ Investing in health, hobbies, and relationships that matter to me 💫Remember—success is not just about career growth, but life as a whole.     The Work-life balance problem is NOT what you thought it was. The First step to solving a problem is to correctly identify the actual problem. Often people take the symptom as the problem and solve it. The symptom gets resolved while the underlying problem persists. The same has happened to the ubiquitous Work-Life Balance.  The issue of Work-Life Balance is NOT an issue of Time spent at work. It's that of interest, satisfaction and passion. Go back to the time when you were working on something you were passionate about. You spent days and sleepless nights on it. You probably slept less than 6 hours and worked more than 12 on that task/project. Every waking minute, you were entirely focused on that dream project/task. Did you complain about Work-Life balance while you were in that zone? We talk/complain about Work-Life Balance only when we are not enjoying our work and we are caught up in work or the workplace which we want to escape. Organizations, Leaders, and Managers attempting to solve the work-life balance problem by compartmentalizing and restricting time spent at work are solving the wrong problem. If the organization culture, the team culture, the quality of work, the approach of the manager, the reward as well as recognition … all of that is in the right place and spirit, and the individual enjoys the work he/she is involved in; no one would be complaining about work-life balance. For your organization/team; Identify what is triggering the work-life balance conversation.  Solve that issue and you won't have to worry about work-life balance.
