Tips for Positioning for Career Success

Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.

Summary

Positioning for career success means presenting your skills, experiences, and personal brand in a way that makes you stand out and attract new opportunities. This process is about gaining clarity on your strengths, aligning your identity with your goals, and strategically sharing your unique story so others see your value.

  • Craft your narrative: Focus on describing the impact you’ve made and the problems you solve, rather than just listing job titles or responsibilities.
  • Connect with others: Regularly reach out to your network to build genuine relationships and stay top-of-mind for future opportunities.
  • Align with your values: Periodically reflect on what matters most to you so your career choices remain true to your identity and strengths.

Positioning yourself isn't just a buzzword.  It's a skill. Most people say "position yourself" and leave it at that. Nobody explains how. Here's how I think about it: 1. Own your narrative  → "Educator | Quality Analyst" - fine, but forgettable. → "Helping professionals grow their LinkedIn presence & land opportunities," now that tells a story. People remember outcomes, not titles. 2. Dominate a specific space  → Trying to appeal to everyone makes you invisible.  → Pick a niche. Go deep.  → Focus your content on one problem, one audience, one goal. 3. Share social proof  → Nobody trusts self-proclaimed experts.  → They trust results. Use numbers, experiences, testimonials, wins. 4. Challenge the norms  → Safe takes won't position you. Bold ideas will. → Instead of "Content is king," say "Content is useless without strategy."  → Instead of "Personal branding matters," say "Your network trusts people, not logos." 5. Use powerful words that evoke emotion  → Weak words = weak perception.  → Strong words = memorable positioning. Instead of "Get more engagement," say "Make your content impossible to ignore." Positioning isn't about listing titles or credentials. It's about showing up in a way that makes people trust, remember, and seek you out. How do you position yourself on LinkedIn?

Your next big career move… Is already hiding in your current role. Most professionals wait for the perfect opportunity to grow. A promotion.
A leadership opening.
A big, obvious project with high visibility. But the truth is—career-changing opportunities are rarely handed to you. They’re often hidden in plain sight, disguised as: → A stretch project no one else wants
→ A company initiative that needs fresh leadership
→ A cross-functional effort that lacks clear ownership The trick? Stop waiting for the "perfect" opportunity. Start spotting the hidden ones. Here’s how to find them in your current role: 1️⃣ Look at what the company cares about right now.
What’s the leadership team actually focused on? What goals keep coming up in meetings? → Align yourself with those priorities, and position yourself as invaluable. 2️⃣ Identify the gaps.
Where is your team struggling? What projects are falling behind? What skill sets are missing? → People who solve real problems (without being asked) get noticed fast. 3️⃣ Ask yourself: What skills do I want to build?
What’s something you would really like to be skilled at? What’s something you need for your next ideal step? → Your job should be working for you, too. If you want to grow in leadership, strategy, or visibility, seek out opportunities that let you practice those skills—inside your current role. 4️⃣ Pitch yourself strategically.
Don't just ask for “more responsibility.” Show how your initiative benefits both you and the company. Position it as a win-win: → “I noticed X is a priority this quarter—would you be open to me leading a solution for that?” ✨ The best career opportunities aren’t assigned. They’re created. What’s one hidden opportunity in your role you could take advantage of right now?

The best time to prepare is when you still have choices. When you’re in the role, doing the work, and can make adjustments on your terms. The worst time is after the decision has been made about you. By then, it’s too late. This isn’t about being paranoid. It’s about being prudent. Investors diversify before a downturn. Professionals should build career resilience before there's uncertainty. Here are three practical moves I'm advising my clients to make right now (quietly and without sending any signals): 1. Update your positioning. ↳ Your LinkedIn and resume should tell the story of where you’re headed, not just where you’ve been. ↳ Most professionals list their responsibilities. Don't do this. ↳ Frame your work in terms of impact: what challenges you’ve addressed, what value you’ve created, and how that positions you for the next opportunity. 2. Reconnect with your network. ↳ Opportunity rarely comes from a job board. It comes from conversations. ↳ Reach out to five people you haven’t spoken to in months. Keep it light. Ask about their world. Listen more than you talk. ↳ Build the bridge before you need to cross it. When the time comes, those relationships will be your strongest currency. 3. Clarify your story. ↳ Why are you valuable? What problems do you solve better than others? And why does that matter now, in this market? ↳ If you can’t explain it clearly and confidently, others won’t be able to either. ↳ Write it down. Say it out loud. Refine it until it feels natural. Even if you never make a move, this work has a payoff. It forces clarity about your strengths, your direction, and your options. And that clarity makes you stronger right where you are. Careers are like investments. The earlier you prepare, the more protection and upside you create when you put your money down. Macro conditions will shift. Companies will adjust. And the professionals who prepare now won’t just survive those shifts. They’ll be the ones ready to step into the next role, lead the next project, or seize the next opportunity. If you need help refining that story and building your positioning, that’s the work I do every day.

I remember chasing success so hard I nearly lost myself. The title looked perfect. The paycheck proved I’d “made it.” But at night, I felt hollow. I had the role everyone else admired, but I couldn’t see myself in it anymore. Cultural Intelligence changed how I approached my career. It taught me that success without identity alignment isn’t freedom. It’s erosion. When I realigned my work with who I really was — my values, my energy, my multidimensional identity — everything shifted. Success became aligned. Fulfillment emerged. Here are 5 ways to keep your identity aligned with career success: 1. Do a values audit Ask: “Which of my daily choices reflect what matters most — and which betray it?” 2. Measure success beyond titles Add peace, freedom, and growth to the metrics. 3. Check your reflection After key meetings, ask: “Did I show up as me, or as the version success expects?” 4. Build honest allies Have 2–3 people who’ll tell you when you’re drifting. 5. Redefine regularly Every season of life requires a new definition of success. Alignment is what turns success from a cage into oxygen. Write one line today: “For me now, success means ___.” Because the highest form of achievement isn’t just being seen. It’s being seen as yourself. ♻️Share this if you’ve ever felt yourself drifting from who you are. ➕ Follow Loren Rosario - Maldonado, PCC for human centered career insights.

Getting promoted at work isn’t just about doing your current job well - it’s also about demonstrating your potential for greater and greater responsibilities. While every company has its own specific criteria for advancement, here are three universal truths that can help you stand out and position you as an obvious choice when new opportunities do arise. 1. Consistently Overdeliver in Your Current Role The first step to being considered for a promotion is excelling in the role you currently have. Consistently meeting expectations isn’t enough - you need to exceed them. Focus on impact, not just activity. Solve problems proactively. Deliver high quality work. 2. Build Relationships and Actively Communicate Your Goals Getting promoted requires visibility, both within your team and across the entire organization. Building strong relationships and never being shy to openly communicate your aspirations are essential steps. Establish strong relationships with colleagues and company leaders. Never assume your manager knows you’re seeking the next step in your career. Actively discuss your career growth with him or her.  Always help others to succeed. Developing a reputation as someone who lifts others up in the workplace is invaluable to one’s career growth. 3. Develop Skills Beyond Your Job Description To move forward in your career, you’ll need to demonstrate the potential to succeed in the role you want, not just the one you have. Expanding your skillset is crucial. Observe the skills and responsibilities of those in the position you’re aiming for and then work on your development of these essential skills. Ask to work on projects that challenge you and allow you to showcase your readiness for more significant responsibilities. Be proactive with your career advancement. Take courses, attend workshops, and seek mentorship opportunities that align with the requirements of your desired role. Promotions rarely happen by chance. They’re the result of strategic effort, consistent excellence, and a clear demonstration of your potential to take on more responsibility. By becoming essential to the company you work for, you increase the odds that you’ll be viewed as a rising star and offered expanded roles. #CareerGrowth

The one career advice I’d give to anyone struggling to grow? 👉 Confidence and positioning. Let me tell you why. A few years ago, I coached a brilliant professional—let’s call her Aisha. She had over 10 years of experience, a strong track record, and a lot of respect from her leaders and team members alike. ❌ But she was stuck in the same role for 3 years. ❌ No promotion. ❌ No visibility. ❌ No real growth. When we 1st spoke, she said, “Everyone says I’m doing great work... but it’s not reflecting anywhere in my career,” she said. And after a few conversations, it became clear: Aisha didn’t lack skill. She lacked confidence and positioning. She was waiting to be “noticed.” She avoided speaking up in meetings. She never articulated her wins. And when it came to interviews or appraisals, she downplayed her value. So, we worked on it. 💡 Built her self-belief. 💡 Reframed her career story. 💡 Practiced how to talk about her impact without sounding boastful. 💡 And we polished her LinkedIn and personal brand so her work spoke even when she wasn’t in the room. Within 4 months, she got a leadership role at a new company, with a 75% salary hike. Here’s the truth: 🚫 Hard work alone won’t take you far. ✅ How you show up, speak up, and position yourself matters just as much. You may be the most capable person in the room, But if you don’t believe in your worth, How will anyone else? 📌 Confidence isn’t arrogance. It’s clarity. 📌 Positioning isn’t marketing. It’s storytelling with purpose. To anyone feeling invisible in their career right now—start with these 3 steps: 1️⃣ Keep a record of your wins (no win is too small). 2️⃣ Speak about your work in terms of impact. 3️⃣ Build your voice—online and offline. The world doesn’t just hire skills. It hires presence. Be seen. Be heard. Be valued. #careergrowth #confidence #personalbranding #professionaldevelopment

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 Being strategic about navigating your career is not manipulative or inauthentic. Being deliberate about selecting the right environment and demonstrating the right behaviors is essential for you to achieve your professional aspirations. Focusing on the following three environmental and three behavioral factors can help you find your place of greatest potential for career success. 𝗘𝗡𝗩𝗜𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗦 𝟭) 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 Companies spend countless dollars on excellent facilities, fair and equitable pay and state-of-the-art technology. But, if an employee feels they have a bad manager, all these other factors are diminished because they will struggle to stay productive and motivated. 𝟮) 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝘀 If our work contributes to our view of the greater good, draws on personal strengths and gives us meaning, we will be committed even during the most trying times. Focusing on strengths at work has been shown to significantly enhance productivity, engagement, and overall job satisfaction. 𝟯) 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝘁 Employees with roles and skills that are seen as critical to the organization's success or that deliver a disproportionate level of value in accomplishing strategic goals have a distinct advantage in being seen as high-value employees. 𝗕𝗘𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗟 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗦 𝟭) 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 A foundational element for placing ourselves in the place of most potential is aligning our daily actions to our values and longer-term goals. There is a passage from Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll that says, "If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there." This simple quote illustrates the importance of knowing your desired destination in the midst of challenge and uncertainty. 𝟮) 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 To be perceived as a high performer in today’s work environment one must be effective at their tasks, contribute to others' productivity and use others' contributions to improve their work performance. 𝟯) 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 The most successful employees share a pattern of foundational Self-Leadership behaviors that enable them to demonstrate self-awareness, emotional intelligence, inclusion, mindfulness, empathy, social intelligence and learning agility during challenging and complex situations.
