Confession: I'm a nervous public speaker… (yet I’ll make $1M+ from keynotes this year). Here are 9 strategies that turned my deepest fear into a powerful strength: PHASE 1: PREP WORK Strategy 1: Study the Best. We have the world's best speakers at our fingertips. Use them. Find 3-5 speakers you admire. Watch their talks on YouTube at 0.75x speed. Take notes on their structure and pacing, voice modulation, movement and gestures, audience engagement. Strategy 2: Create Clear Structure. Great speakers don't deliver speeches, they tell stories. Map your journey explicitly: opening hook, 3 key points, memorable close. Tell the audience where you're taking them. Strategy 3: Build Your "Lego Blocks." Don't memorize your entire speech. That's a trap. Instead, perfect these moments: your opening 30 seconds, key transitions, punchlines and closers. Practice in segments, not sequences. When things go sideways (they will), you'll adapt instead of freeze. Weird trick: Practice once while walking or jogging. It simulates the heart rate spike you'll feel on stage. PHASE 2: PRE-STAGE Strategy 4: Address the Spotlight. The Spotlight Effect: We think everyone's watching our every move. They're not. Use the "So What?" approach: Name your worst fear, ask "So what if it happens?", realize it's never that bad. You'll stumble? So what. Life goes on. Your family still loves you. Strategy 5: Get Into Character. Create your speaker persona. Ask yourself: What traits do they have? How do they move? What's their energy? Flip the switch. Become that character. It's not fake, it's your best self. Strategy 6: Eliminate Stress. The "Physiological Sigh" kills anxiety fast: Double-inhale through your nose, long exhale through your mouth, repeat 2-3 times. Science-backed. Immediate impact. PHASE 3: DELIVERY Strategy 7: Cut the Tension. Last week, they asked what song I wanted to enter to. I said "Girl on Fire" by Alicia Keys. They thought I was joking. I wasn't. "It's my 1-year-old's favorite song. Figured he'd be more excited to watch if Dad entered to his jam." Instant laughter. Tension gone. Audience on my side. Find your tension breaker. Use it early. Strategy 8: Play the Lava Game. Your pockets and torso are lava. Don't touch them. This forces you to gesture broadly, open your body, project confidence. Big gestures early build momentum. Strategy 9: Move Purposefully. Don't pace like you're nervous. Move like you own the room. Slow. Deliberate. Purposeful. Use movement to create dramatic pauses. Let your words land. Start with one speech, one strategy: Pick your next presentation—could be a team meeting, a toast, whatever. Choose ONE strategy from this list. Master it. Then add another. Public speaking is a muscle. These strategies are your workout plan. The more you practice, the stronger you get. Remember: Everyone gets nervous. The difference is having a system. Now you have one. Use it. Practice it. Watch yourself transform.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about speaking on a panel or podcast. Most people are so focused on sounding smart that they forget the ONLY thing the audience cares about. Connection. Real, human, punch-you-in-the-chest connection. After speaking at SXSW, SEAT, and presenting to teams at Disney Entertainment, Live Nation Entertainment, Peloton Interactive, and a few others who definitely didn’t have time to be bored, I’ve learned one truth. Public speaking is not a performance. It’s a service. And when you treat it like service, everything changes. Here are the data-backed habits that actually move the needle. 1. Speak in 12-second blocks. Studies show the average listener tunes out after 12 to 18 seconds. Break everything into short, clean blocks. No paragraphs. Just punches. 2. Start with a story, not a credential. Neuroscience says stories activate up to 7 regions of the brain. Credentials activate one. Make them feel before you make them think. 3. Give one controversial take. Panels are full of "nice" opinions. Be the person who says the thing everyone is thinking. Bold viewpoints create 3 to 5 times more engagement. 4. Make every answer actionable. People remember speakers who solve problems. Not speakers who speak. Every point you make should pass the "can someone use this tomorrow" test. 5. Let your personality leak. Humor increases retention by 20 percent. Vulnerability increases trust by 40 percent. Combine both and you’re basically cheating. 6. Slow your pace by 15 percent. Most speakers rush. Research shows listeners rate slower speakers as more credible, more confident and more strategic. 7. End with a takeaway, not a thank you. Give them the line they quote later. I didn’t plan on being a career coach. Before the pandemic, I actually wanted to become a public speaker. I took courses. I hired a mentor. I practiced for hours - because I knew how powerful this skill would be for life. Then the world shut down. Speaking opportunities disappeared. And I had to pivot. That’s when I gave career coaching a real shot. But here’s the thing... Everything I learned while training to speak? It changed how I show up for clients, on sales calls, in content, & with my team. So instead of a “how to…” Here are 10 things I learned that completely transformed the way I communicate: 1. Practice active listening Pay attention fully. People can feel it when you do. 2. Slow down your speech Fast talkers lose attention. Clarity builds authority. 3. Use simple words If you can’t explain it clearly, you don’t know it well enough. 4. Make eye contact It builds instant trust. Even on Zoom. 5. Use pauses effectively Silence isn’t awkward; it’s powerful. Let your words land. 6. Vary your tone Monotone = tune out. Great speakers sound like music. 7. Prepare and practice Confidence is earned in private before it’s shown in public. 8. Ask for feedback Growth only happens when you're willing to hear the hard stuff. 9. Record yourself Yes, it’s uncomfortable. But it’s the fastest way to improve. 10. Stay positive Energy is contagious. If you don’t believe in your message, no one else will. Whether you’re selling, coaching, interviewing, or leading… Your communication matters more than you think. Public speaking comes up a lot in my conversations - so I wrote down the tips that have helped me the most. Some of what I know came from being a Radio-TV major and Psych minor. Most of it came from standing at the front of many rooms as early as elementary school, watching audiences closely, and learning the hard way what works. ⚡️ Practice like it matters (because it does). You have to practice the material - you can’t just wing it, champ. Write the talking points and actually practice saying them out loud, so your edits improve the flow of what you have to say. I’ll practice 10–15 times depending on the content, the stakes and the variables. Tip: Learn how much practice you need to feel confident at the podium. ⚡️ Read and respond to the room. 50% of the speaking success equation is listening and responding to what you observe, as you speak. Notice when people lean in - or begin to drift. Observe body language. Remember that a lost room can usually be brought back. Tip: Deliver the content AND stay in lock step with your audience. ⚡️ Be ready to pivot. Know your material so thoroughly that you’re well positioned to let parts of it go for the sake of (1) getting to the point, (2) keeping your audience engaged and/or (3) mindfully managing time. Tip: Being pivot-ready means you won’t stumble if/when the moment calls for a change of plan. ⚡️ Find your rhythm. Because I once dreamed of delivering the news, I studied broadcasters like Wendy Chioji, Pam Oliver, Tom Brokaw, Oprah, etc. All unique in their styles - their pauses, points of emphasis, and presence. The speakers we love to listen to have a cadence that feels natural and true. Tip: Borrow techniques from speakers you admire, while keeping your voice authentic to you. ⚡️ Know your point - and get to it. Audiences decide quickly whether to tune in or tune out. And transparently, many of us are desperate for reasons to tune in. Be clear and unwavering in emphasizing your key takeaways. Tip: Don’t bury the lead. Use your time to tell a story that actually lands. <> When you’ve done your homework - and the moment arrives to speak - take a deep breath. 😮💨 Remember that you have a voice worth listening to and that your voice belongs in the room. I was VP at a $2bn+ company by age 34 because of my public speaking skills. I’m convinced that your ability to successfully command a room, a meeting, or an auditorium can have the single greatest impact on your professional success. Last week I reviewed my first rule for public speaking success: People will forget what you said. But they’ll remember how you said it. Today, I’m going to review rule 2. PREParation is the mark of a true professional. The importance of preparation and practice in public speaking is hugely important. I talked about this last week. But that’s not what I’m talking about with rule 2. Rule 2 refers to PREP…or, Point of View Reason Example Point of View In any public speaking setting, whether it’s in front of an audience of 1000 or you're giving a demo to a single prospect, you need to clearly present a point of view. Presenting a point of view gives you credibility and authority. It demonstrates you’re an advisor and an expert. This is how you win an audience. And your point of view has to come with the right tone and body language. Because that’s fully 93% of how the audience is absorbing your message. Your Reason, an Example and finally restating your POV rounds out the PREP model. Here’s what it looks like in practice: Public speaking is the single most important skill to advance your career (POV). You need to pay attention to this because I know you care about moving into higher levels of authority, earnings and recognition (Reason). My ability to command a room with authority, especially as an Account Executive early in my career, gained me recognition from VPs and Senior leaders across my previous employers. This recognition gave me an inside edge on promotions and more opportunities that advanced my career quickly. I became a VP at age 34 (Example). For this reason, public speaking is the single most important skill to advance your career (POV). See how that worked? Stated my POV; followed by a Reason for why the audience should care; shared a personal Example; and wrapped up by stating my POV again. PREP Super simple formula that anyone can learn. Public speaking isn’t easy, but it can be learned in 30 days and mastered over a career. I’ll dive into rule 3 next week.

Public speaking isn’t a gift. It’s a muscle. And like any muscle… you need to train it. Most people wait until they’re “ready” to speak on stage. Truth is you’ll never feel ready unless you start training before. Here are 3 ways I built (and still build) my public speaking muscle, the same way I train at the gym 🏋️♀️: 1️⃣Practice in everyday team settings Speak up in meetings, forums, or even small discussions. Forget what others might think, the goal is repetition. Every rep counts. Bonus tip: don’t overthink what you want to say because there is every chance that the more you overthink it, the more someone is going to share the same idea before you. 2️⃣ Scale your impact in group forums Look for ways at work to speak once → impact many. That could be presenting to several clients at once, joining a panel, or saying yes to a conference slot. 3️⃣ Teach what you know best If you’re great at a skill, share it. Run a short workshop, teach your team, or even post a short LinkedIn video. Teaching forces clarity and clarity is the core of great public speaking. 👉 Start small, start now.
