This makes it easier to remember and reduces anxiety. 🎤 Record and Review: Record your practice sessions using your phone or a camera. Reviewing these recordings helps identify areas for improvement and track progress over time. 🎤 Gradual Exposure: Start by speaking in front of a mirror, then progress to speaking in front of a small group of friends or family, and gradually increase the audience size. This helps build confidence step-by-step. 🎤 Use Flashcards: Write key points or parts of your speech on flashcards. This helps you stay on track during your speech and reduces the fear of forgetting your lines. 🎤 Join Speaking Clubs: Participate in public speaking clubs like Toastmasters. Regular practice in a supportive environment helps you gain confidence and receive constructive feedback. 🎤 Practice with Distractions: Train yourself to stay focused by practicing your speech in environments with potential distractions, such as a noisy room or with background music playing. 🎤 Mirror Neurons: Watch videos of great speakers and try to mimic their body language and speaking style. This activates your mirror neurons, helping you learn by imitation. 🎤 Mindful Breathing: Before speaking, take deep breaths in for a count of four, hold for four, and exhale for four. This helps calm your nerves and centre your mind. 🎤 Positive Visualization: Spend a few minutes each day visualizing yourself giving a successful speech. Public Speaking: 10 Lessons from 500+ Events Over the years, I’ve spoken at 500+ events—startup competitions, investor panels, and high-stakes pitches. Every time, I’ve learned something new. Public speaking isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making people listen, connect, and remember. Here’s what works. 1. Record yourself speaking The first time I watched myself, it was uncomfortable. But it’s the fastest way to improve. Notice where you look, how fast you speak, and which filler words you use. Adjust accordingly. 2. Pause and let it land A great point followed by silence has impact. Give the audience a moment to absorb what you just said. It might feel long to you, but to them, it’s clarity. 3. Make real eye contact Don’t scan the room aimlessly. Speak to one person at a time. Deliver a point, then move on to the next. It makes your talk feel like a conversation, not a performance. 4. Ditch the script, keep the structure Memorizing word-for-word sounds robotic. Instead, focus on key elements: - The opening to hook attention - The transitions to keep flow - The closing to leave an impact - Tell a story, not just facts 5. People forget stats, but they remember stories. A simple structure that works: - The setup: What was normal before? - The shift: What changed? - The resolution: What was learned? 6. Talk to strangers every day Public speaking is just structured conversation. The more you engage with people in daily life—baristas, event attendees, colleagues—the more natural you’ll feel on stage. 7. Use your hands with purpose Standing stiff makes you look uncomfortable, but overusing gestures can be distracting. Controlled, purposeful movement adds authority to your presence. 8. A little humor goes a long way A well-placed joke, especially about yourself, makes you relatable and eases the tension. It’s a great way to keep the audience engaged. 9. The One-Mind Method Claim the room: arrive early, greet people, then begin with ten seconds of stillness and eye contact. Talk like you belong: one clear promise in one sentence. Example: “You will leave with a simple system to keep attention on you.” Speak to one person: say “you,” not “you all.” Choose a single listener to anchor, then rotate attention across the room. Personalize at scale: use the audience’s own language. Ask one micro-question. Reflect it back within sixty seconds. Keep it intimate: short sentences. Concrete examples. Specific numbers. A 30-second opening script to steal “Before we start, choose one challenge you need solved today. Hold it in mind. Here is the promise: you will learn a two-step way to hold attention without pushing or performing.” One promise. One path. One proof. Eliminate filler words. End with a next action the room can do in one minute. Speak like they are your family. If your message is the most important, more than your own personality, then you will speak from the heart. I remember being scared to death to speak in front of my classmates. For most people, fear of public speaking is greater than fear of death! Being able to speak effectively to groups is a key leadership skill, but fear can hold us back, cause us to doubt our abilities and shy away from opportunities that could propel us forward. I decided to follow my mother’s advice and take a public speaking class. Fast forward to today, over forty years later. I learned public speaking skills, taught university classes, and became a marketing and sales director. I went on to become a paid speaker, life coach and the host of The Hero Within Podcast. Learning public speaking was one of the most important career decisions I've ever made. Through the years, I've had the privilege of coaching others to become better entrepreneurs and leaders. Whether it's delivering a sales pitch, leading a staff meeting, or engaging the audience, effective communication is critical to success. I continue to learn from my coaches who are helping me improve my presentation skills. It isn't a one-time endeavor; it's an ongoing process that significantly enhances our effectiveness as a leader. Here are seven steps to becoming a better presenter and a more effective communicator: 1. Know your audience, their needs and interests. Research and understand their problems and gear your message to solving a specific problem. 2. Become well versed in your content, allowing you to deliver it confidently. Don’t memorize your material because then you’ll sound scripted. Instead, be comfortable enough that you can talk about the main points from your heart. 3. Practice, practice, practice and practice some more! It’s great to practice in front of a mirror, and it helps to become comfortable hearing your own voice. 4. Become an engaging storyteller to connect with your listeners. Personal stories or hypothetical scenarios can make complex information more relatable to the audience. 5. Pay attention to your nonverbal body language, using posture, gestures and movement to enhance your impact. Your posture conveys your level of confidence and your eye contact helps the audience build connection with you. 6. Manage nervousness by focusing on the excitement to share your message. Instead of telling ourselves to “calm down,” reframing our anxiety as excitement is more effective because the feelings are nearly the same physiologically! 7. Actively seek feedback and continuously work to improve. Be the first to give yourself feedback, assessing what you think went well and what you think you could improve. You may also seek feedback from audience members, mentors, or your coach. Take the feedback that you feel applies, disregard the rest and continue practicing. See #3. By embracing these principles and dedicating yourself to ongoing growth, you’ll increase your speaking skills, empowering yourself to lead and inspire others with clarity and confidence.

As senior representatives of the larger industry and our organisation, we’re often invited to speak at events and share our insights on stage or in front of a camera. The first time going up on an imposing stage in front of an audience, or the first time facing a camera, can be overwhelming to anyone. But remember, while it may seem like public speaking comes naturally to some, this ability isn’t necessarily innate—it can be practised, honed, and carefully crafted over time. What appears effortless on stage is often times a product of deliberate preparation. Sharing the 5 principles I follow to ensure my presentations are impactful: 🗒 In-Depth Research: Mastering the subject matter is crucial. This is a continuous process and needs dedication. I dive deep into data, trends, and case studies regularly, to make sure I have relevant and compelling insights at my fingertips - and not just for a speaking engagement. ➡ Deliberate Practice: Rehearsing just before an engagement will only take you so far. It’s about refining your delivery style, flow of thoughts and anticipating transitions, over a period of time. Only then will you truly own the material - so that it feels completely natural. 🗣 Personalised Delivery: The best speeches are the ones that mirror natural conversations. So, as you delve into the exercise of learning and practising public speaking, you will find that the best way to structure what you have to say, is to keep it as close as possible to your natural conversation style. This approach fosters authenticity, ensuring the message lands in a way that feels completely you. 👥 Audience-centric Approach: Understanding who you are speaking to —what they care about, what challenges they face, what is relevant to the context of the engagement — will help you fine-tune and tailor your message for maximum impact. 🔄 Continuous Refinement: Actively seek feedback after each and every talk, in order to continuously refine your technique. 75% of people suffer from glossophobia—the fear of public speaking. Fortunately, I’m in the other 25%. If I had a business superpower, it would be public speaking—specifically, the ability to move an audience and build trust. But it wasn’t always that way. I vividly remember my first high school speech. I could barely breathe; my face was flushed, and I wanted to vanish. It was terrible. Still, I kept at it. Why? Because getting good at public speaking is worth it. Our last business was built almost entirely on public marketing events. Despite being a relatively young team, public speaking positioned us as trusted experts. We stood out. If 75% of people avoid the stage, simply having the guts to stand up gives you an edge. Just showing up is half the battle. The other half? It's simpler than you think. To succeed in public speaking, I believe you only need to nail three things: 1. Credibility Know your stuff. Practice. Be a student of your profession. Remember, you probably already know more than 99% of your audience. And if you don’t know an answer? Own it. Transparency builds trust. 2. Likability Care about your audience. Walk in with humble confidence. People can tell when you’re genuine—it’s not about putting on a show but showing you care. 3. Trustworthiness Follow through. You’re selling yourself. Confidence comes naturally when you know you’ll deliver on your promises. "Speak with Confidence: My Journey to Taming the Beast of Stage Fright" Public speaking anxiety, or stage fright, was a hurdle I had to overcome, but through experience and learning, I've discovered strategies that have helped me manage it—and even turn it into a strength. Here are some of the key takeaways that helped me find success in my presentations: CONTENT I learned the importance of keeping my content clear, relevant, and concise. Ensuring that what I share resonates with my audience and stays within the right length has been crucial in holding their attention. VOICE One of the most valuable lessons was realizing that if there’s tension in my breath, the audience feels it too. I've learned to control the energy of the room by first mastering my own breathing and voice. It's incredible how much power there is in simply speaking with a relaxed, confident tone. POSTURE Aligning my body with my message was a game-changer. I now make sure to maintain eye contact and stand as close to the audience as possible. This connection makes the message feel more genuine and helps build rapport. NERVOUSNESS To manage nervousness, I found that moving around the podium and taking deep, full abdominal breaths really helps. It not only calms me down but also keeps the energy flowing, making the whole experience more dynamic. NOTES Carrying a summary of my presentation is something I’ve learned to appreciate. I was terrified of public speaking and had embarrassing verbal tics. So what did I do? I joined the speech and debate team. I’ve turned my kryptonite into my superpower & given speeches in front of large crowds, including 60,000 on the lawn of Central Park. 5 tips to help you crush your next talk: 1️⃣ Do not pace. It distracts the listener and projects disorganized structure. Instead - only during major transitions in the speech - move to a fixed point on the stage 3 or 4 steps away, stop and square your shoulders to the audience. Take the listener on a journey with you. 2️⃣ Keep it on the up and up. Always gesture with your hands above the waist. Science shows you command respect when you use your hands to accentuate key points. 3️⃣ Hold space. Early on, project confidence and comfort with tension by pausing so long that it’s almost uncomfortable. But don’t do this too much or else it’s annoying and overly emphatic/preachy. 4️⃣ Be spontaneous. Say something up top that keys off the room, the day, ideally funny or ironic or self deprecating - anything that makes you appear unscripted and more natural. When you show you’re present, the audience mirrors you. 5️⃣ Never read. Sure, write out prepared remarks. Read them as many times as you want in front of a mirror. Then, burn them. Learn how to speak from the heart with simple notes that remind you of the key points. The audience came to hear you SPEAK - not listen to you read. Public speaking can set you apart. You probably are great at it and just don’t know it yet. With these tips, all the world’s a stage.
