    Before diving headfirst into AI, companies need to define what data privacy means to them in order to use GenAI safely. After decades of harvesting and storing data, many tech companies have created vast troves of the stuff - and not all of it is safe to use when training new GenAI models. Most companies can easily recognize obvious examples of Personally Identifying Information (PII) like Social Security numbers (SSNs) - but what about home addresses, phone numbers, or even information like how many kids a customer has? These details can be just as critical to ensure newly built GenAI products don’t compromise their users' privacy - or safety - but once this information has entered an LLM, it can be really difficult to excise it. To safely build the next generation of AI, companies need to consider some key issues: ⚠️Defining Sensitive Data: Companies need to decide what they consider sensitive beyond the obvious. Personally identifiable information (PII) covers more than just SSNs and contact information - it can include any data that paints a detailed picture of an individual and needs to be redacted to protect customers. 🔒Using Tools to Ensure Privacy: Ensuring privacy in AI requires a range of tools that can help tech companies process, redact, and safeguard sensitive information. Without these tools in place, they risk exposing critical data in their AI models. 🏗️ Building a Framework for Privacy: Redacting sensitive data isn’t just a one-time process; it needs to be a cornerstone of any company’s data management strategy as they continue to scale AI efforts. Since PII is so difficult to remove from an LLM once added, GenAI companies need to devote resources to making sure it doesn’t enter their databases in the first place. Some under-discussed scenarios-   1.  𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 You never disclosed your religion, health status, or financial worries. But the AI inferred it—based on the questions you asked, the times you searched, and the tone of your inputs. 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸: This silent profiling is invisible to you but available to platforms. In the wrong hands, it enables discrimination, targeted influence, or surveillance—with no transparency. 𝟮.  𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 Even if you have never used a particular AI tool, it can still build a profile on you. Maybe a colleague uploaded a file with your comments. Or your name appears in several related chats. 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸: You are being digitally reconstructed—without consent. And this profile might be incomplete, outdated, or wrong, yet used in risk scoring, decisions, or content filtering. 𝟯. 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝗮 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽𝘀 Imagine an AI financial assistant slowly nudging CFOs toward certain frameworks or partners—not based on merit, but algorithmic incentives. 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸: This is not advice. It’s behavioural steering. Over time, professional decisions are shaped not by judgment, but by what the system wants you to believe or do. These aren’t edge cases of tomorrow—they are quietly unfolding in the background of our workflows, and conversations. 𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆" 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗯𝗼𝘅 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀.     A recent issue has emerged where private ChatGPT conversations, once shared, have become publicly searchable on Google. This is a huge red flag for HR. Conversations containing sensitive information, like employee personal details from CVs, confidential business plans, or even legal advice, are now potentially exposed. My key takeaways: ▶️ Data Privacy Nightmare: This isn't just a technical glitch; it's a massive data privacy risk. Imagine employee PII, performance review details, or internal strategy documents showing up in a public search. This could lead to serious breaches and legal repercussions under regulations like GDPR or state privacy laws. ▶️ Policy and Training Gap: The root of the problem is a lack of awareness. Employees are using AI tools without fully understanding the privacy and security implications. This is a clear indicator that your AI policy needs to be robust and your training needs to be a top priority. Do your employees know what they should and shouldn't be putting into AI tools, or sharing from them? ▶️ Mitigation is Key: 🔸Audit Your Tools: Review which AI tools your employees are using and what data they might be processing. 🔸Revise Your Policy: Update your acceptable use policy to explicitly address the use of generative AI, including what types of information are strictly forbidden from being inputted or shared. 🔸Train Your People: Conduct urgent training sessions to raise awareness about the risks of sharing conversations from AI tools. This situation highlights the critical need for a proactive approach to AI governance in HR. It's no longer just about the tech; it's about the people using it and the sensitive data they handle.     I'm increasingly convinced that we need to treat "AI privacy" as a distinct field within privacy, separate from but closely related to "data privacy". Just as the digital age required the evolution of data protection laws, AI introduces new risks that challenge existing frameworks, forcing us to rethink how personal data is ingested and embedded into AI systems. Key issues include: 🔹 Mass-scale ingestion – AI models are often trained on huge datasets scraped from online sources, including publicly available and proprietary information, without individuals' consent. 🔹 Personal data embedding – Unlike traditional databases, AI models compress, encode, and entrench personal data within their training, blurring the lines between the data and the model. 🔹 Data exfiltration & exposure – AI models can inadvertently retain and expose sensitive personal data through overfitting, prompt injection attacks, or adversarial exploits. 🔹 Superinference – AI uncovers hidden patterns and makes powerful predictions about our preferences, behaviours, emotions, and opinions, often revealing insights that we ourselves may not even be aware of. 🔹 AI impersonation – Deepfake and generative AI technologies enable identity fraud, social engineering attacks, and unauthorized use of biometric data. 🔹 Autonomy & control – AI may be used to make or influence critical decisions in domains such as hiring, lending, and healthcare, raising fundamental concerns about autonomy and contestability. 🔹 Bias & fairness – AI can amplify biases present in training data, leading to discriminatory outcomes in areas such as employment, financial services, and law enforcement. To date, privacy discussions have focused on data - how it's collected, used, and stored. But AI challenges this paradigm. Data is no longer static. It is abstracted, transformed, and embedded into models in ways that challenge conventional privacy protections. If "AI privacy" is about more than just the data, should privacy rights extend beyond inputs and outputs to the models themselves?     Before you call the OpenAI API in production, read this. LLMs feel easy to integrate. Just drop an API key, pass a prompt, and get output. But most teams don’t realize they’re exposing themselves to a completely new class of risks. Anyone who's building with OpenAI (or similar APIs), here’s what you need to secure before that feature ships: 1. Prompt sanitization Prompts are input, so treat them like untrusted user data. If your app allows users to influence the prompt (via forms, chat, or metadata), you’re one template injection away from a jailbreak. Use strict prompt templates, escape user input, and don’t interpolate raw strings. 2. Context injection controls RAG pipelines or “context-aware” chatbots often pass documents, logs, or internal data into prompts. These need access control. Avoid injecting raw context into the model, especially when multiple tenants or privilege levels are involved. Use scoped and filtered context windows tied to user identity. 3. Response validation Never trust the model’s output blindly. If it's making decisions (e.g. flagging fraud, triggering workflows), add an explicit approval or validation layer. LLMs hallucinate, and sometimes confidently say the wrong thing. 4. Rate limits and abuse protection The OpenAI API is a resource. Without abuse controls, such as per-user quotas, authN tokens, IP checks), it becomes a denial-of-wallet risk. Also consider prompt flooding attacks like malicious users can spike your usage via crafted prompts. 5. Logging hygiene LLM request logs often contain sensitive user inputs and internal content. Don’t log full prompts and responses in plaintext unless you’ve done a privacy impact review. If you store logs for debugging or audit, encrypt them and apply TTLs. Treat LLM APIs like you treat any untrusted compute or execution layer. Because that’s exactly what they are.

    This week, likely millions of ChatGPT conversations—including résumés, complaints about harassment, and even mental-health confessions—started appearing in Google Search results. The culprit wasn’t a hack, but a new “Make this chat discoverable” setting that let shared conversations be indexed. OpenAI has now disabled the feature and begun purging those URLs from Google’s cache, but the mini-scandal still leaves a powerful after-taste. What can we take away—even after the fix? First, privacy-by-default beats privacy-by-checkbox. Users are busy; many will click through a prompt without fully grasping the stakes. Designing for the inattentive majority, not the careful minority, is the only safe baseline. Second, search engines play by simple rules: if it’s publicly reachable, it’s fair game. Your robots.txt file and “noindex” tags matter, but so does understanding that a single public link can light up the entire web. Third, metadata often outlives intent. Even anonymized chats revealed clues about employers, locations, and personal struggles. Assume that context + AI = re-identification risk, and govern data sharing accordingly. Fourth, incident response is reputation management. OpenAI’s rapid rollback limited damage, yet the headlines keep circling. In an era where screenshots move faster than code pushes, the window to act is measured in hours, not days. Finally, digital hygiene belongs to every employee. If you paste proprietary data into an AI tool, double-check sharing settings. Treat every prompt as if it might one day be projected on a billboard—and protect your customers the same way. The bigger story isn’t an embarrassing leak; it’s a wake-up call for anyone building or buying AI. Privacy isn’t just a legal checkbox—it’s a product feature.
