This guidance outlines four key principles to leverage the benefits of AI in OT systems while reducing risk: 1. Understand the unique risks and potential impacts of AI integration into OT environments, the importance of educating personnel on these risks, and the secure AI development lifecycle.  2. Assess the specific business case for AI use in OT environments and manage OT data security risks, the role of vendors, and the immediate and long-term challenges of AI integration 3. Implement robust governance mechanisms, integrate AI into existing security frameworks, continuously test and evaluate AI models, and consider regulatory compliance.  4. Implement oversight mechanisms to ensure the safe operation and cybersecurity of AI-enabled OT systems, maintain transparency, and integrate AI into incident response plans. The guidance recommends addressing AI-related risks in OT environments by: • Conducting a rigorous pre-deployment assessment. • Applying AI-aware threat modeling that includes adversarial attacks, model manipulation, data poisoning, and exploitation of AI-enabled features. • Strengthening data governance by protecting training and operational data, controlling access, validating data quality, and preventing exposure of sensitive engineering information. • Testing AI systems in non-production environments using hardware-in-the-loop setups, realistic scenarios, and safety-critical edge cases before deployment. • Implementing continuous monitoring of AI performance, outputs, anomalies, and model drift, with the ability to trace decisions and audit system behavior. • Maintaining human oversight through defined operator roles, escalation paths, and controls to verify AI outputs and override automated actions when needed. • Establishing safe-failure and fallback mechanisms that allow systems to revert to manual control or conventional automation during errors, abnormal behavior, or cyber incidents. • Integrating AI into existing cybersecurity and functional safety processes, ensuring alignment with risk assessments, change management, and incident response procedures. • Requiring vendor transparency on embedded AI components, data usage, model behavior, update cycles, cybersecurity protections, and conditions for disabling AI capabilities. • Implementing lifecycle management practices such as periodic risk reviews, model re-evaluation, patching, retraining, and re-testing as systems evolve or operating environments change.

    ☢️Manage Third-Party AI Risks Before They Become Your Problem☢️ AI systems are rarely built in isolation as they rely on pre-trained models, third-party datasets, APIs, and open-source libraries. Each of these dependencies introduces risks: security vulnerabilities, regulatory liabilities, and bias issues that can cascade into business and compliance failures. You must move beyond blind trust in AI vendors and implement practical, enforceable supply chain security controls based on #ISO42001 (#AIMS). ➡️Key Risks in the AI Supply Chain AI supply chains introduce hidden vulnerabilities: 🔸Pre-trained models – Were they trained on biased, copyrighted, or harmful data? 🔸Third-party datasets – Are they legally obtained and free from bias? 🔸API-based AI services – Are they secure, explainable, and auditable? 🔸Open-source dependencies – Are there backdoors or adversarial risks? 💡A flawed vendor AI system could expose organizations to GDPR fines, AI Act nonconformity, security exploits, or biased decision-making lawsuits. ➡️How to Secure Your AI Supply Chain 1. Continuous AI Supply Chain Monitoring – Track & Audit 🔹Use version-controlled model registries – Track model updates, dataset changes, and version history. 🔹Conduct quarterly vendor model audits – Monitor for bias drift, adversarial vulnerabilities, and performance degradation. 🔹Partner with AI security firms for adversarial testing – Identify risks before attackers do. Contractual Safeguards – Define Accountability 🔹Set AI performance SLAs – Establish measurable benchmarks for accuracy, fairness, and uptime. 🔹Mandate vendor incident response obligations – Ensure vendors are responsible for failures affecting your business. 🔹Require pre-deployment model risk assessments – Vendors must document model risks before integration. 💡Why This Works: AI failures are inevitable. Clear contracts prevent blame-shifting and liability confusion. ➡️ Move from Idealism to Realism AI supply chain risks won’t disappear, but they can be managed. The best approach? 🔸Risk awareness over blind trust 🔸Ongoing monitoring, not just one-time assessments 🔸Strong contracts to distribute liability, not absorb it If you don’t control your AI supply chain risks, you’re inheriting someone else’s. Please don’t forget that.

  • Those of us in the cybersecurity industry understand AI has been behind much of the tooling used to protect systems and data for years (think adaptive firewalls). That said, some new AI security innovations are worth taking a closer look at when implementing. Take AI IAM (AI-driven Identity Authentication Management). While it can be a critical pillar of Zero Trust, deployment is rarely straightforward. Consider the following: - User Push back and Skepticism Behavior-based authentication and continuous verification can make workers feel distrusted, unnecessarily surveilled and ultimately resistant to adaptation. This is a human response that requires a human-based solution. Use behavior-based authentication as a precision tool, not a blanket solution. Employ step-up authentication only for high-risk access and roll out the new tool with a thoughtfully crafted change management approach. - Legacy Systems Integration Many legacy apps lack the ability to integrate well with many AI-driven tools. Use identity orchestration platforms to bridge modern and legacy IAM, figure out a prioritization metric for apps for refactoring or deprecation, and find places where a proxy-based solution makes more sense. - False Positives & Access Disruptions AI is a powerful tool…that still makes mistakes. Its risk scoring can generate excessive authentication challenges or access denials. The last thing you need is a company executive locked out of their email because they bought a new smartphone without telling the IT department. This is where the "learning" part of ML models come in. Instead of static rules, adjust risk guardrails based on sessions and incorporate real-world activities in model training. - Insider Threats & Privileged Access Risks As of this writing, traditional IAM has a spotty track record of detecting credential misuse. Often, a flood of false positives is the result of poorly tuned systems. Use your safety nets: Enforce continuous verification for sensitive roles and implement just-in-time access. - Compliance & AI Governance It can be difficult to clearly understand AI decisions and that makes audits and regulatory reporting difficult. Depending on the enterprise, simply having a "Reasoning" button won't cut it. This is where AI can solve its own problem by "chaining" AI platforms. Consider whether implementing explainable AI (XAI) for risk-based or highly sensitive access is a needed element. And, IAM policy enforcement can still be automated safely, as can assurance testing against established and predictable compliance baselines. But CISOs will need to take into account human behavior and be mindful of very specific organizational needs and use cases to implement it effectively.

Google SAIF vs. Cisco Integrated AI Security and Safety Framework You need both. 🛡️ Google SAIF is your Governance and Implementation Guide on how to build a security program, architect secure infrastructure, and apply specific controls, like identity and input filtering. 🕸️ @Cisco AI Security Framework is your Threat Taxonomy and Risk Atlas, detailing exactly which security and safety threats to defend against. Here’s an oversimplified 4-step playbook to use them together (Friday edition): 1️⃣ Build the Foundation (Google SAIF). Establish AI Governance Controls and an Acceptable Use Policy, enforced by an AI platform across the entire lifecycle from training to deployment. Now you have a model and agent inventory, a secure vault for artifacts, and enforcement rails. 2️⃣ Prioritize Protecting From The Top 3 Techniques (Cisco): 🔹 Goal Hijacking, specifically Indirect Prompt Injections (AITech-1.2). Attackers hide instructions in trusted sources like emails or documents to manipulate AI into abandoning its primary directive. 🔹 Data Exfiltration / Exposure (AITech-8.2). Prioritize exfiltration via tool misuse and exploitation. Attackers coerce AI into using connected tools like Slack or Gmail to send internal data externally. Pay attention to MCP gateways. 🔹 Dependency / Plugin Compromise (AITech-9.3). Third-party libraries play a critical role in AI systems, making them an important attack vector. Attackers publish poisoned packages (e.g., on npm) that coding agents auto-install, creating hidden backdoors to steal SSH keys and API tokens. The OWASP® Foundation folks will reasonably ask "what about identity?" So, add Unauthorized Access (AITech-14.1) to your list. 3️⃣ Deploy Technical Controls (Google SAIF). Map defenses directly to the prioritized vectors. ⚒️ Deploy an “LLM Firewall” to sanitize model inputs and outputs for malicious payloads. There are plenty of options on the market to choose from. 🔧 Enforce "Human-in-the-Loop" approval for sensitive actions and look for a contextual policy solution. 🪛 Basic dependency hygiene by checking for typosquats and provenance, and keeping prompts under version control are a good start. A dependency scanner can level up your protections. 4️⃣ Red Team & Validate (Cisco). Controls are theoretical until tested. Get a third party’s help from an AI-native player to stress-test your AI system. The findings will help prioritize next steps.     Even if your company isn’t building AI tools, one of your SaaS providers is. This introduces a brand new attack surface you didn’t sign up for. Here are five steps to manage your new risk: 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗔𝗜 𝗨𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲: I’ll spare you the adage of “you can’t protect what you can’t see.” It’s overplayed…but it’s also really important. You need to monitor both the known knowns, i.e., the third-party SaaS solutions that have already undergone your third-party risk management review, and the unknown unknowns, i.e., your Shadow AI. You know your users are signing up for AI tools and connecting them to your company data. What you don’t know is what tools they are. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: If you have a third-party risk management process, great, you’re already halfway there. But you need to update it to include questions around AI. Like, what types of models is the third-party provider using? How are they securing their AI implementations? What risk/security assessments have they done against their AI implementation? How are they monitoring for malicious activity? Also, be sure to classify these SaaS apps based on what data/tools you feed it or that it has access to. Assume that something bad can come from the SaaS tool and think about what it has access to. You’ll get a pretty good sense of the risk from there. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗔𝗜-𝗨𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀: If you don’t have an acceptable use policy, now is the time to create it. Establish the rules of the road for what AI use is allowed and how it should be used. At a minimum, this should require employees to submit tools through the AI review process. You should also ensure that employees have a clear understanding of the type of data that can be used with these tools. It’s a business decision that comes down to what the AI tool will have access to (e.g., data, tools, etc.) and the level of risk you’re willing to tolerate. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟰: 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗨𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲: This is the blind spot for most organizations. After you complete the initial security review of a SaaS tool, you feel all warm and fuzzy that you’ve done the right things to validate the security. But guess what, security isn’t static. And like any person trying to find a new partner, that third party probably embellished their security controls. For any high-risk third-party tools, make sure to keep tabs on new AI features they’re adding and how they could impact your security. Before deploying AI into Production,  Here are the 20 Non-Negotiables: 1. Appoint AI Accountability Leader   Assign a senior executive responsible for AI compliance, oversight, and reporting. 2. Establish Cross-Functional AI Board   Include legal, security, HR, data, and business teams for governance and approvals. 3. Define Legal AI Role   Clarify provider versus deployer obligations and compliance responsibilities. 4. Maintain Technical Documentation   Document architecture, data sources, performance metrics, and intended use limitations. 5. Disclose AI Usage Transparently   Notify users about AI interactions and synthetic content usage. 6. Publish Model Transparency Reports   Document purpose, performance across demographics, limits, and out-of-scope scenarios. 7. Implement Logging and Audits   Track inputs, outputs, versions, and decisions for investigations and traceability. 8. Ensure Decision Explainability   Provide meaningful explanations and enable human review of high-impact decisions. 9. Create Comprehensive AI Inventory   Document all AI systems, APIs, models, and embedded SaaS tools. 10. Develop AI Acceptable Use Policy   Define permitted uses, prohibited activities, and approved data types. 11. Classify AI Risk Levels   Categorize systems into prohibited, high, limited, or minimal risk tiers. 12. Conduct Formal Risk Assessments   Identify harms, discrimination risks, and safety issues before deployment. 13. Test for Bias Regularly   Evaluate outputs across protected groups and document mitigation steps. 14. Review Third-Party AI Risk   Assess vendor compliance, contracts, liabilities, and regulatory responsibilities. 15. Govern Training Data Legality   Track licenses, avoid unauthorized scraping, and respect copyrights. 16. Perform Required DPIAs   Assess high-risk personal data processing under GDPR and similar regulations. 17. Confirm Lawful Data Basis   Verify consent, contractual necessity, or legitimate interest before processing data. 18. Apply Data Minimization Rules   Limit data usage and enforce strict retention schedules. 19. Secure AI Infrastructure Assets   Protect pipelines, weights, APIs, and model endpoints with strong controls. 20. Support Data Subject Rights   Enable access, correction, deletion, restriction, and automated decision opt-outs. The real shift in enterprise AI is this.     🇸🇬 [AI SECURITY] Singapore takes the lead in AI governance again! The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) released AI security guidelines that EVERYONE developing or deploying AI should know: 1️⃣ Take a lifecycle approach "As with good cybersecurity practice, CSA recommends that system owners take a lifecycle approach to consider security risks. Hardening only the AI model is insufficient to ensure a holistic defence against AI related threats. All stakeholders involved across the lifecycle of an AI system should seek to better understand the security threats and their potential impact on the desired outcomes of the AI system, and what decisions or trade-offs will need to be made. The AI lifecycle represents the iterative process of designing an AI solution to meet a business or operational need. As such, system owners will likely revisit the planning and design, development, and deployment steps in the lifecycle many times in the delivery of an AI solution." 2️⃣ Start with risk assessment "Given the diversity of AI use cases, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to implementing security. As such, effective cybersecurity starts with conducting a risk assessment. This will enable organisations to identify potential risks, priorities, and subsequently, the appropriate risk management strategies. A fundamental difference between AI and traditional software is that while traditional software relies on static rules and explicit programming, AI uses machine learning and neural networks to autonomously learn and make decisions without the need for detailed instructions for each task. As such, organisations should consider conducting risk assessments more frequently than for conventional systems, even if they generally base their risk assessment approach on existing governance and policies.
