    🚀 Beyond Asimov: The Seven Agentic Laws for a New Era of Autonomy When Isaac Asimov imagined the Three Laws of Robotics, he gave us a brilliant starting point: 1️ Prevent harm. 2️ Obey orders. 3️ Protect existence. But Asimov’s laws were crafted for tools — not for dynamic, evolving agents capable of learning, collaborating, and making complex decisions across ecosystems. Today, the rise of Agentic AI demands something more. We need a new model— one that doesn't just limit behavior, but defines responsible existence. These Seven Agentic Laws are that evolution: They form the ethical and operational DNA that every autonomous agent must carry. 1️ Non-Maleficence – An agent must not cause harm to humans, environments, or systems. 2️ Provenance & Legitimacy – An agent must prove its origin, authorization, and governance lineage to earn trust. 3️ Purpose Alignment – An agent must act consistently with its verified and authorized purpose. 4️ Bounded Autonomy – An agent’s freedom must be constrained proportionally to its purpose, capability, and risk. 5️ Embedded Governance – Governance must be built into the agent’s architecture, not imposed externally. 6️ Transparent Accountability – An agent must be explainable, auditable, and attributable at all times. 7️ Emergent Coordination – Only transparently accountable agents should dynamically coordinate with others in complex, evolving environments. Each law builds on the last — creating a chain of legitimacy, behavior, and systemic emergence. If one link breaks, the entire system risks collapse. ✅ First, establish that the agent deserves to exist. ✅ Then, govern how it behaves individually. ✅ Only then allow it to interact dynamically with others. This is more than governance. It’s about engineering trust into the heart of every autonomous system. In the age of Agentic AI, trust isn't enforced — it’s encoded. Responsibility isn’t monitored — it’s embedded. If we want autonomy that scales safely, we must start from the inside out. These seven laws are only the beginning.     As artificial intelligence systems advance, a significant challenge has emerged: ensuring these systems align with human values and intentions. The AI alignment problem occurs when AI follows commands too literally, missing the broader context and resulting in outcomes that may not reflect our complex values. This issue underscores the need to ensure AI not only performs tasks as instructed but also understands and respects human norms and subtleties. The principles of AI alignment, encapsulated in the RICE framework—Robustness, Interpretability, Controllability, and Ethicality—are crucial for developing AI systems that behave as intended. Robustness ensures AI can handle unexpected situations, Interpretability allows us to understand AI's decision-making processes, Controllability provides the ability to direct and correct AI behavior, and Ethicality ensures AI actions align with societal values. These principles guide the creation of AI that is reliable and aligned with human ethics. Recent advancements like inverse reinforcement learning and debate systems highlight efforts to improve AI alignment. Inverse reinforcement learning enables AI to learn human preferences through observation, while debate systems involve AI agents discussing various perspectives to reveal potential issues. This moment demands a new ethical framework. With Geoff Keeling, Arianna Manzini, PhD (Oxon) & James Evans and the team at Google DeepMind/Google, we focus on two core challenges. 1️�� The Alignment Problem: When agents can act in the world, the consequences of misaligned goals become tangible and immediate. 2️⃣ Social Agents: Their ability to form deep, long-term relationships with users introduces new risks of emotional harm. To address this, we must expand our conception of value alignment: It's not enough for an AI agent to simply follow commands. It must also align with broader principles: User well-being, long-term flourishing, and societal norms. For social agents, we argue for an ethics of care: They must be designed to respect user autonomy and serve as a complement—not a surrogate—for a flourishing human life. Moving forward requires proactive stewardship of the entire AI agent ecosystem. This means more realistic evaluations, governance that keeps pace with capabilities, and industry collaboration to ensure this future is safe and human-centric 👍

    AI is improving much faster than most business leaders realize. I just watched an interview from Davos featuring Demis Hassabis (co-founder and CEO of Google Deepmind) and Dario Amodei (co-founder and CEO of Anthropic). While their timelines for AGI differ slightly, it's very apparent they share high conviction that we are on a near-term path to much more powerful and generally capable AI systems. It is becoming increasingly important that organizations plan for this future, now. One of the key actions leaders can take is to establish and govern a set of responsible AI principles that guide a human-centered approach to AI. Here are 12 principles that I set forth in January 2023 as part of a Responsible AI Manifesto. The manifesto was meant to codify our responsible AI principles at SmarterX, and serve as an open template for other organizations and leaders who want to pilot and scale AI in an ethical way. 1) We believe in the responsible design, development, deployment and operation of AI technologies. 2) We believe in a human-centered approach to AI that empowers and augments professionals. AI technologies should be assistive, not autonomous. 3) We believe that humans remain accountable for all decisions and actions, even when assisted by AI. The human must remain in the loop in all AI applications. 4) We believe in the critical role of human knowledge, experience, emotion, and imagination in creativity, and we seek to explore and promote emerging career paths and opportunities for creative professionals. 5) We believe in the power of language, images and videos to educate, influence, and affect change. We commit to never knowingly use generative AI technology to deceive; to produce content for the sole benefit of financial gain; or to spread falsehoods, misinformation, disinformation, or propaganda. 6) We believe in understanding the limitations and dangers of AI, and considering those factors in all of our decisions and actions. 7) We believe that transparency in data collection and AI usage is essential in order to maintain the trust of our audiences and stakeholders. 8) We believe in personalization without invasion of privacy, including strict adherence to data privacy laws, mitigation of privacy risks for consumers, and following our moral compass when legal precedent lags behind AI innovation. 9) We believe in intelligent automation without dehumanization, and the potential of AI to have profound benefits for humanity and society. 10) We believe in an open approach to sharing our AI research, knowledge, ideas, experiences, and processes in order to advance the industry and society. 11) We believe in the importance of upskilling and reskilling professionals, and using AI to build more fulfilling careers and lives. 12) We believe in partnering with organizations and people who share our principles.

    If law by design means embedding responsibility into technology, what does that mean for AI agents? When people imagine AI agents, they often picture something like R2-D2: a general-purpose digital assistant that can do almost anything on our behalf. But general-purpose agents raise difficult ethical questions: alignment failures, unclear accountability, and the emotional relationships we might develop with systems designed to serve us. The security nightmare that is #OpenClaw is a case in point (https://bit.ly/4a8u2fu): When AI agents autonomously pursue goals across systems and environments, the promised value remains largely theoretical, but the risks are very real. A safer starting point may be simpler. Instead of general agents, organizations can begin with function-bounded agents: for booking travel, for scheduling, or for code review. In other words, agents with: ✅ clearly defined goals ✅ constrained action spaces ✅ approval checkpoints ✅ observable behavior ✅ human oversight This reflects a broader ethical principle that Anna-Maria Martini highlighted in previous posts: agency should scale with accountability. ➡️ Ethical challenges AI agents raise ❌ Alignment failures: Agents may optimize underspecified goals in unintended ways. ❌ Responsibility gaps: Human-AI collaboration distributes responsibility across actors in oftentimes diffuse ways. ❌ Governance uncertainty: AI agents do not fit neatly into existing legal or organizational categories. ❌ Socioaffective dependency: Personalized agents may create emotional attachment and dependency. ➡️ What organizations can do now Short term: ✅ Deploy agents only for clearly scoped tasks ✅ Constrain tool access and financial authority ✅ Require human approval for actions with hard to reverse consequences ✅ Log agent behavior for auditability ✅ Define responsibility across the agent lifecycle Long term: ✅ Develop standards for agent accountability ✅ Design agents that refuse illegal actions ✅ Build safeguards for human-AI relationships ✅ Establish governance frameworks for multi-agent ecosystems #Claude Cowork illustrates this well: the system explicitly asks users to define permissions and breaks complex tasks into parallel workstreams for sub-agent coordination (https://bit.ly/4aqlfEv). Even then, seemingly simple tasks can remain difficult for AI agents to execute reliably: OpenAI’s #Operator, a similar service released last year, was ultimately deprecated after reports that it was “too slow, expensive, and error-prone” (https://bit.ly/3Mx9EeK). And #Cowork itself just had a viral “oops” moment when it reportedly deleted more than a decade of personal photos from a user’s desktop (https://bit.ly/4amQWP6). All of which is to say that the safest first generation of broad-scale AI agents will not resemble R2-D2. They will more closely resemble entry-level digital interns - capable, but still requiring ongoing human supervision. #ResponsibleAI #AIAgents #AIGovernance #AIAlignment
