    Leveraging this new OpenAI real time translator to phish via phone calls in the target’s preferred language in 3…2… So far, AI has been used for believable translations in phishing emails — E.g. my Icelandic customers are seeing a massive increase in phishing in their language in 2024. Before only 350,000 or so people comfortably spoke Icelandic correctly, now AI can do it for the attacker. We’re going to see this real time translation tool increasingly used to speak in the target’s preferred language during phone call based attacks. These tools are easily integrated into the technology we use to spoof caller ID, place calls, and voice clone. Now, in any language. Educate your team & family + friends. Make sure folks know: - AI can voice clone - AI can real time translate to speak in any language - Caller ID is easily spoofed with or without AI tools - AI tools will increase in believability Example AI voice clone/spoof example here: https://lnkd.in/gPMVDBYC Will this AI be used for good? Sure! Real time translations are quite useful for people, businesses, & travel. We still need to educate folks on how AI is currently use to phish people & how real time AI translations will increase scams across (previous) language barriers. *What can we do to protect folks from attackers using AI to trick?* - Educate first: make sure folks around you know it’s possible for attackers to use AI to voice clone, deepfake video and audio (in real time during calls) - Be politely paranoid: encourage your team and community to use 2 methods of communication to verify someone is who they say they are for sensitive actions like sending money, data, access, etc. For example, if you get a phone call from your nephew saying he needs bail money now, contact him a different way before sending money to confirm it’s an authentic request - Passphrase: consider using a passphrase with your loved ones to verify identity in emergencies (e.g. your sister calls you crying saying she needs $1,500 urgently ask her to say the passphrase you agreed upon together or contact with another communication method before sending money)

    A grandfather in Texas narrowly escaped losing $7,500 after scammers used AI to perfectly clone his grandson's voice in a sophisticated deepfake fraud attempt. What makes this case particularly alarming is the victim's testimony: "It sounded EXACTLY like my grandson." Not similar. Exact. The technological capability to clone voices with such precision has reached mainstream criminal use. Meaning this is far from isolated. The scam followed the classic pattern: emotional manipulation ("I'm in jail"), urgency ("need bail money now"), and secrecy ("don't tell my parents"). These psychological tactics paired with convincing voice technology create a nearly perfect attack vector. What saved this grandfather? A moment of critical thinking: calling his grandson directly on his actual number. As AI voice synthesis continues advancing at breakneck speed, even this verification step becomes vulnerable. Soon, real-time voice cloning during active calls will be commonplace. Organizations must implement proactive deepfake detection across communication channels before these attacks escalate further.     AI voice cloning is no longer an emerging risk. It is an operating reality. Leaders are not asking whether AI voice cloning works. They are asking whether their organizations are prepared for its consequences. The upside for this capability is compelling: 1) Scalable, personalized voice interactions across customer and employee channels 2) Expanded accessibility for individuals with visual impairments 3) Faster multilingual communication for global operations 4) New content formats for training, investor communications, and brand engagement However, the risk landscape has matured just as quickly. A typical example: a multinational company approved an urgent vendor payment after accountants received what they believed was a call from the CEO. The voice, tone, and cadence were familiar. The authorization sounded routine. It was entirely synthetic. The loss was seven figures, approved through otherwise established controls. This type of incident is no longer rare, hypothetical, or isolated to poorly governed organizations. It exploits trust, speed, and authority. Three things money movement activities rely on daily. This does not mean AI voice cloning should be avoided. It means it must be governed.     🚨 SCAM : Someone cloned my voice 🚨 Today, some of my colleagues and personal network received a sophisticated scam—a message from a French number, displaying my profile picture, and worst of all… a voice message mimicking my voice. Yes, MY voice. Same tonality, same (cute) little French accent… This kind of fraud is becoming more common, and it could happen to you or your business soon. Few things to remember: 1️⃣ AI-generated voices are now highly realistic – If your voice is online (videos, podcasts, interviews), scammers can clone it. You don’t believe it until it happens to you. 2️⃣ Never trust voice alone – Always verify unusual requests through a second channel (text, email, or in person). 3️⃣ As often, Deepfake scams rely on urgency – If someone is pressuring, stop and confirm before acting. 4️⃣ Use a “safe word” with close contacts (and kids!) – A pre-agreed phrase can help confirm someone’s identity in critical situations. 5️⃣ Be mindful of your digital footprint – The more personal data (voice, images, videos) you share publicly, the easier it is to be impersonated. 6️⃣ Raise awareness in your company & network (like I’m doing here) – Businesses need strict identity verification protocols, especially for financial transactions.     A finance employee just wired $25 million to criminals. After a video call with her CFO. She could see him. Hear him. See her colleagues. All of them were AI. This happened to Arup, a major UK engineering firm, in 2024. And it's happening RIGHT NOW everywhere. Here's how the scam worked Finance employee gets email from "CFO" requesting urgent transfers. She's suspicious, so she demands a video call to verify. Joins conference with "CFO" and multiple "colleagues." Everyone looks real. Sounds real. She makes 15 transfers over several days. $25.6 million gone. The criminals? Downloaded public videos of these executives. Fed them into AI. Created perfect deepfakes in real-time on a live video call. Here's what terrifies me Q1 2025 numbers just dropped → $200 million stolen via deepfake fraud in 3 MONTHS → AI clones any voice with 3 seconds of audio → 68% of deepfake videos are indistinguishable from real → Deepfake incidents up 1,700% in North America → 51% of companies have ALREADY been targeted This isn't phishing emails anymore. This is your CEO on video asking for a wire transfer. And you can't tell it's fake. Ferrari almost fell for it too Executive received WhatsApp call from "CEO Benedetto Vigna." Voice perfect. Accent perfect. But the executive asked a personal question only the real CEO would know. The fake CEO hung up immediately. Here's what keeps me up at night As a cybersecurity recruiter placing SOC Analysts and CISOs, I can tell you Most companies are NOT prepared. They're focused on firewalls while criminals are → Scraping executive speeches from YouTube → Pulling voices from earnings calls → Grabbing faces from LinkedIn videos → Training AI models in hours Your security? Useless. The attack isn't against your systems. It's against your people's ability to trust their own eyes and ears. What companies need RIGHT NOW • Verify ALL financial requests through different channels... even video calls • Create "safe word" systems only real executives know • Multi-person approval for large transfers • Train employees: "I can see them" is NO LONGER PROOF But most companies won't act until AFTER they get hit. The Arup CFO said, "If cyberattacks were bullets, we would all be crawling around on the floor because they would be coming through the window, thousands of rounds a second." To every finance professional Next time your CEO asks you to wire money, even on video, verify through a DIFFERENT channel. Call their cell. Walk to their office. Text a personal question. Generative AI is making it cheaper and easier to clone voices or videos. In North America alone, deepfake‑enabled fraud surged 1,740 % between 2022 and 2023, and Q1 2025 fraud losses topped $200 million. Real-World Hits: Engineering firm Arup lost $25 million when attackers used a deepfake version of its CFO during a video call to authorize transfers. Similar CEO‑impersonation scams hit multiple FTSE-listed companies, with criminals initiating fake WhatsApp messages followed by voice‑cloned instructions to move funds. Why the system is still behind Traditional risk systems—based on business rules—aren’t built for synthetic AI fraud. Deloitte warns risk frameworks in many banks aren’t equipped for generative AI threats. The Prescription 🔹 Banks must invest in threat-based programs to detect anomalies and deepfake behavior. 🔹 Employee training is key: staff should be taught to spot red flags in audiovisual interactions. 🔹 Firms need to hire or reskill to build deepfake detection capabilities. Why This Matters for Financial Institutions GenAI doesn’t just automate content - it empowers entirely new methods of impersonation. Deepfakes amplify traditional social‑engineering by layering it with hyper-realistic audiovisual deception. That drastically raises the bar for fraud prevention and detection. Recommended Moves: 🔹 Simulate deepfake scams in phishing drills—make them realistic and test audio/video angles. 🔹 Red���team AI‑voice attacks: produce mocks of your execs’ voices to train both tech and teams. 🔹 Deploy real‑time detection tools that analyze video/audio integrity using watermarking or anomaly detection. 🔹 Policy overhaul: draft protocols for verifying suspicious requests via secondary channels (e.g. confirmed calls or in-person signoff). 🔹  Cross-industry collaboration: share deepfake attack intelligence with other firms and regulators. What’s Next? 🔹  AI fraud loss may hit $11.5 billion in the U.S. within four years, due to GenAI phishing and impersonation attacks. 🔹  Regulatory shifts (e.g. EU AI Act) are on the horizon, pushing for transparency, watermarking, and auditability in synthetic media. Bottom line: Deepfake fraud is no longer futuristic fiction - it’s happening right now, and banks are still scrambling to catch up. Attackers no longer need to rely on generic phishing emails; they can craft personalized, real-time audio messages that sound just like your colleagues or leaders. How can you protect yourself and your organization? - Pause Before You Act: If you receive an urgent call or message (even if the voice sounds familiar) take a moment to verify the request through a separate communication channel. - Don’t Trust Caller ID Alone: Attackers can spoof phone numbers and voices.
