As always, the event garnered great participation by the audience of the San Diego life‑science community attending the BPI-West conference.

Women In Bio-San Diego hosted “AI & Rare Disease – A New Era in Diagnosis and Care,” bringing together scientists, clinicians, entrepreneurs, patient advocates and patient’s parents to discuss how artificial intelligence is transforming the rare disease landscape. Moderated by Aditi Chawla of Illumina, the panel featured experts including Kat Schmolly MD (zebraMD), Meredith Wright, Ph.D. (Rady Children's Institute for Genomic Medicine), Tamar Grossman (La Jolla Labs Inc.), Rachel Vanni (The Charlie Elenore Foundation), and Caroline Cheung-Yiu (CURE (Complex, Undiagnosed, Rare, and Extraordinary)). The discussion highlighted how AI is helping clinicians analyze complex genomic and medical data, shorten diagnostic timelines, and improve access to care for patients with rare conditions, while also supporting families in navigating complicated healthcare systems. Panelists emphasized that behind every dataset are real patient stories and families seeking answers, underscoring the responsibility and impact of innovation in this space. Beyond diagnosis, AI is also accelerating therapeutic discovery -especially in areas like RNA-based drug design- by enabling faster identification of mutations and development of targeted treatments. A key theme throughout the event was collaboration: by connecting patients, clinicians, researchers, and advocates, AI can strengthen the rare disease community and accelerate progress toward effective treatments. The evening concluded with appreciation for the shared commitment to technology, compassion, and partnership, with thanks to Travere Therapeutics and Michele Huie for hosting. WIB San Diego Member Spotlight: Dr Deisy Corredor Women In Bio-San Diego would like to recognize Dr Deisy Corredor, PhD. for her valuable participation and support as Co-Vice Chair of the Communications Committee. Her efforts play a vital role in keeping our members informed, connected, and inspired. Through her leadership, she helps foster engagement, provides timely updates to members, and showcases what it means to be a phenomenal role model and colleague. Dr. Corredor is the Founder and Principal Consultant of CoreBiotechnology Consulting. In this capacity, she supports biotechnology companies in advancing and coordinating DS-CMC (Drug Substance - Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls) program activities, developing CMC strategies, and guiding programs along the critical path from early to late-stage clinical development. Her expertise ensures that clinical programs progress efficiently through their full lifecycle. We are grateful to Dr. Corredor for being a WIB SD member and volunteer!
