Open Source Isn’t Just Code, It’s Strategy My last post explored how collaboration has become the default in modern software. Here are 4 reasons why decisions about collaboration belong in the Board Room, not the CTO’s office. 1. Change the game Collaboration can define the market. Android changed the arc of the smart phone industry by providing a multivendor counterpoint to the walled garden of iOS.  Blackberry, Windows Phone and Symbian all failed as everyone but Apple decided to standardize on Android. 2. Portability wins While ‘vendor lock-in’ isn’t yet in the OED as a curse word it might as well be.  The cloud-native stack demonstrates why customers love portability. Kubernetes caused cloud providers to compete hard on features while preserving portability and keeping costs in check.  3. Shape (or avoid) Regulation When industries lead with open standards, competition and compliance can coexist. In 5G, frameworks like the Networking 5G Super Blueprint and Open RAN, allow providers to have the transparency and interoperability that regulators might otherwise look to impose. Compliance is easier when you help define the rules. 4. Focus on differentiation Studios don’t win audiences through proprietary visual effects tools, they win through story. The Academy Software Foundation standardizes shared tools like OpenEXR, OpenColorIO, and ACES so studios can focus on creativity. The lesson applies everywhere: invest collective effort in the plumbing so your teams can spend more time on the magic.
