From a governance standpoint, certifications provide mechanisms that degrees simply don’t: ongoing education requirements, codes of ethics, and enforcement structures. When regulators or auditors ask how we ensure competency in key roles, pointing to recognized certifications (CFA, FRM, CIMA, etc.) is far more persuasive than citing where someone went to school. This article rightly positions certifications as part of an organization’s control environment, not just an HR preference.
Most professionals won’t say this out loud, but hiring managers already know it: A 4-year degree is becoming the starting line, not the finish line. What really moves careers now are the certifications that prove you’re current, credible, and accountable. In an AI‑driven economy where entire job categories can shift in a year, a “one and done” degree from 2010 (or even 2020) doesn’t tell employers what they need to know: Are you up to speed on today’s tools, risks, and regulations? Are you committed to ongoing learning—not just once, but continuously? Is anyone actually holding you to a code of ethics? That’s why credentials like: CPA, CFA, ChFC Certified MBA (MBAe) PMP, PHR/SPHR CISM, CompTIA Security+ / A+ CIMA, FRM have become the real career currency in finance, tech, security, risk, HR, and modern management. They don’t just certify that you passed an exam once. They force you to stay sharp through renewal cycles, continuing education, and ethical standards. I just published a new LinkedIn newsletter article on this shift: “Why Certifications Are Quietly Replacing College Degrees as the Real Career Currency” In it, I break down: -Why employers are leaning harder on certifications -How colleges are scrambling to copy the model with short “certificate” programs -What makes top certifications different (and more powerful) than one‑time degrees -How MBA‑level certifications like the MBAe fit into this new landscape If you’re planning your next career move, or rethinking how you hire and promote, this is a conversation you can’t ignore. #FutureOfWork #MBA #Skills2026 #ContinuousLearning #Certification
