Volunteering at a Dog & Cat Rescue Shelter – CSR Activities Recently, as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, we had the opportunity to volunteer at the Tokyo branch of the Minashigo Rescue Team. The first hour was dedicated to a learning session, where we gained insights into their daily operations, as well as key social challenges such as the reality behind “zero euthanasia,” pet abandonment by elderly owners, and the growing issue of stray cats. One of the most striking learnings was that while “zero euthanasia” is often emphasized, there are still cases categorized as “inevitable euthanasia.” A significant portion of these involve kittens, often due to uncontrolled breeding linked to the feeding of stray cats. This highlighted the importance of responsible actions — while feeding stray cats may seem compassionate, it can unintentionally lead to overpopulation and, ultimately, more euthanasia. Initiatives such as spay/neuter programs (TNR) play a crucial role in addressing this issue. We also learned about adoption considerations in Japan. While the age limit for adopting pets is often set at around 60, this is based on both the lifespan of animals and the healthy life expectancy of humans, ensuring responsible care throughout the pet’s life. Interestingly, even for people in their 20s and 30s, whose life stages may change significantly, the shelter encourages adopting older animals (around 10 years old) rather than puppies or kittens, so they can be cared for until the end of their lives. After the session, we participated in cleaning the facility and walking the dogs, which gave us a deeper appreciation for the hands-on efforts required to support these animals. Through this experience, we were reminded that small, everyday actions can collectively make a meaningful impact on society. CSR活動：保護犬・保護猫シェルターでのボランティア 先日、CSR活動の一環として、みなしご救援隊 犬猫譲渡センター 東京支部にて、ボランティアに参加いたしました。 最初の1時間は勉強会に参加し、日々の活動内容に加え、「殺処分ゼロ」の実態や、高齢者による飼育放棄、野良猫問題といった社会課題について学びました。 特に印象的だったのは、「殺処分ゼロ」と言われる一方で、実際には“やむを得ない致死処分”が存在していること、またその多くを仔猫が占めているという現実です。背景には、野良猫への無秩序な餌やりによる繁殖があり、結果としてさらなる命が失われてしまうという課題があります。 そのため、猫を守るためには、むやみな餌やりではなく、去勢・避妊手術（TNR活動）といった取り組みが非常に重要であることを改めて認識しました。 また、犬猫を引き取る際の年齢についても学びました。日本では一般的に、60歳までが新たに犬猫を迎え入れる際の一つの目安とされていますが、これは動物の寿命と人間の健康寿命を踏まえ、最期まで責任を持って飼育できるよう配慮された基準とのことです。 さらに、20〜30代の若い世代であってもライフステージの変化が大きいことから、仔犬や仔猫ではなく、10歳前後の動物を引き取り、最期まで見届けるという選択肢も提案されている点が非常に印象的でした。 その後は、施設内の清掃やお散歩にも参加し、現場での支援の大切さを実感しました。 今回の経験を通じて、社会課題への理解が深まるとともに、日常の小さな行動の積み重ねが大きな変化につながることを改めて感じました。 #CSR #ボランティア #保護犬 #保護猫 #動物福祉 #Volunteering #AnimalWelfare #DogRescue #CatRescue #Guidepoint
