Yes, I Have a System for My Birthday

I was recently on the phone with a colleague discussing how to create their System of Success™ when they expressed a common fear: that having a system would lock them into rigid structure and eliminate opportunities for flow, creativity, and exploration.

I've found the exact opposite to be true.

Systems are everywhere. In fact, everything appears to be part of a system—"a regularly interacting or interdependent group of items forming a unified whole." But rather than creating rigidity, operating within a system actually enables more creativity, flow, and exploration because systems are dynamic and interactive.

My Garden System

One of my favorite examples is my wild, developing garden. There's a complex system between soil, water, air, light, weather, flora, and fauna. Yet how these elements work together is beautifully dynamic—yielding abundant flowers one year, more fruit another. This year we had pumpkins that planted themselves! Last year brought a bumper crop of tomatoes (though deer have decimated them this season).

The system provides the foundation; nature provides the creativity.

My Birthday System

I've even created a system for my birthday to ensure it yields the joyful celebration I desire. The beautiful result? I have a wonderful day, and those celebrating with me also have a more enjoyable experience. The system creates more flow, creativity, and exploration—not less.

My birthday system is a simple document I share with my immediate family called "How to Make Sure Mom Has a Great Birthday." (Everyone in our family has one of these.) It includes:

  • What would make a great day for the birthday person
  • Gift ideas they'd enjoy
  • Preferred activities (and what they'd rather skip)
  • Their favorite meal
  • Other helpful notes

And it always ends with: "For this or something even better!"

Why This Works

My family loves this system because they're not left guessing what would bring the most joy. They can be inspired by the ideas while knowing the birthday person will be genuinely happy with the result.

The system ensures the celebration reflects who the birthday person actually is—not what the celebrators think that person wants.

Your Turn

I'm curious: Where have you created a system that ensures you get what you want in life or business?

Systems don't limit us—they liberate us to focus on what matters most while creating space for the unexpected magic to unfold.
