World-Class Inside Sales Managers Create Vision - A Layered Perspective

A little over a year ago, I transitioned into the SaaS world as an SDR and was thrown into it with little to no training. I had never used LinkedIn or Twitter and now I was supposed to “prospect” with them, whatever that meant. I was overwhelmed and had no clue what I had to do in order to be successful. Looking back, there is one thing that that has helped contribute tremendously to my early success: vision.

As an SDR it's easy to get caught up in the day to day activities. There are days you will want to quit your job and never return to sales, then by 3 o’clock you love your job and never want to leave the role. It is in these times that I wish early in my career I was given vision. Someone to help me take a step back and see the bigger picture. What did the next 3 years look like? Why am I working here and where do I want to go? What can I do right now to move closer to my vision?

Ralph Barsi, Sr. Director of Sales Development at Achievers wrote an amazing post on about this on Saleshacker.com. He stated,

“If your purpose doesn’t haul you out of bed every morning, then tackling inbound leads and reaching out to prospects won’t ever matter.”

My personal mentor at HireVue taught me that as a manager, it is imperative to help your reps have a vision. Sit down with them & build one, three, five and ten year plans. Teach them how to plan and include benchmarks that are clearly defined. Build out action plans to help them achieve these goals. Most of all, be a leader. Get in the trenches when you need to. Be someone that they look turn to when they have a day that they are ready to quit. Help them have vision.
