Why We Built a New Online Community for Academics
Academic life can be incredibly rewarding. It can also be isolating.
At NCFDD, we’ve spent the past 15 years building programs and tools to support faculty development. But again and again, we’ve heard some version of the same thing:
“I feel like I’m doing this alone.”
Between publication deadlines, department responsibilities, and shifting institutional priorities, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, and even easier to feel disconnected. Support is often informal. Community, if it exists at all, can be hard to access.
We created the NCFDD Community to change that.
A New Kind of Space
The NCFDD Community is a private online space built specifically for our members. It’s not another open forum or social platform. It’s a space where faculty can connect, reflect, and support each other across disciplines and institutions.
Inside, members will find:
- Career stage–specific discussion groups
- Weekly conversations like Monday Motivator check-ins and Wednesday Wisdom prompts
- Recaps of NCFDD webinars and blog posts, extended through community dialogue
- Encouraging, thoughtful responses from peers who understand the day-to-day challenges of academic life
This space was designed to make faculty life feel less isolating and more sustainable.
Created With Intention, and With You
This Community isn’t just aligned with our mission. It’s a direct result of member feedback.
During our beta phase, members shared what would make the space most useful—suggesting topics, shaping tone, and helping us refine the structure. That feedback led to features that are already helping faculty build connection, accountability, and momentum.

Real Moments of Support
Here’s what it looks like inside:
“This post couldn’t have come at a better time. It hit very hard. It really does hold up a mirror to the patterns I have been in for a few years now.” —Graduate student in a Monday Motivator thread
“I’ve definitely been feeling like the Monday Motivators have my name written all over them lately!” —Assistant professor
“I feel this. My brain wants it to be close to perfect before sending it out.” —Mid-career faculty member in a writing discussion
These are real interactions. And they’re happening every week.
What’s Next
The Community is now open, and we’re launching with a series of weekly giveaways throughout August. Members who participate in Wednesday Wisdom discussions will be entered to win seats in some of our most popular programs, including:
- Faculty Success Program
- Department Chair Success Program
- Mid-Career Mojo
- Our new alternative funding program
If you’re a current NCFDD member, we invite you to join the conversation, introduce yourself, and see what’s already unfolding. If you are not sure if your institution is a member, click here to find out!
Whether you’re looking for advice, connection, or encouragement—you’ll find it here.
Because faculty success should never be a solo journey.
