Why do people think they are amazing?

Why do people think they are amazing?

Are you as good at things as you think you are? How good do you think you are at reading people's minds? What about managing your team? Are you better than the average citizens whilst considering your health? Can you play chess with all your acquaintances? Can you write without any grammar mistakes?

Knowing how much we are good at something is a skill required more than our self-esteem. It helps us to know when we can move ahead with our decisions and when we need advice from others. But psychology suggests that we do not evaluate ourselves accurately. In fact, we overestimate our skills mostly. This phenomenon is named as the Dunning Kruger Effect by the experts.

The effect explains that we evaluate ourselves more than what our potential offers. If you ask students if they belong to the above average category, then 80% of them will respond with a yes. People tend to rate themself better than others in every discipline; ranging from health, sports, leadership, ethics, or any. They overestimate their skills to a great extent. In addition, People usually tend to rate their skills as an expert. So, who is most vulnerable to this delusion? Sadly all of us.

People are doubly cursed. First, due to a lack of knowledge, they reach poor decisions. Second, due to this gap, they are unable to catch a hold of their errors. In short, they never spot their errors because of a lack of knowledge.

Our ego did not play a role in the overestimation. People often spot their errors after they learn more about it. That's why moderate people know where they are lacking, and experts are aware of their knowledge. But experts make a different mistake. They assume that everyone is knowledgeable too. So both, either unskill or expert, evaluate self-perception inaccurately.

Conclusion

So how do you analyze this invisible Dunning Kruger Effect? The solution is simple. First, ask and listen to your feedback, even if it is hard for you. Second, never stop learning. The more you learn, the more skilled to become.
