Value of neurodiversity in the professional world

In the past week, we celebrated #neurodiversitycelebrationweek and discussed the benefits of #neurodiversity in the workplace.

Neurodiversity is all about variation and differences in neurological structure and function among humans, particularly when these differences are viewed as normal and natural rather than pathological.

Neurodivergent people have brain functions that differ from neurologically typical or neurotypical. The term neurodiversity refers to differences in neurocognitive functioning. It is an umbrella term that includes neurocognitive differences such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette's syndrome, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, intellectual disability, and schizophrenia, as well as normal neurocognitive functioning or neurotypicality.

Valuing neurodiversity = Competitive advantage

Neurodiversity is a type of diversity that benefits the workplace in various ways. People with neurocognitive disabilities have talents, perspectives, and skills that can be extremely useful in multiple work settings. Employers are recognizing these benefits and developing hiring initiatives to attract neurodiverse workers. While these initiatives are more common in larger corporations, they have proven beneficial for businesses of all sizes. Hiring neurodiverse employees can give companies a competitive advantage that results in measurable benefits, both financially and in workplace culture.

The Advantages of Neurodiversity in the Workplace

Hiring neurodiverse employees can give companies a competitive advantage, resulting in measurable benefits and diverse resolutions to business hardships and roadblocks. Among these advantages are the following:

●   Neurodiverse employees bring diverse experiences and skillsets to your office, assisting you in increasing effectiveness and diversifying your perspective on your engaging audience.

●   Diverseness of all kinds fosters creativity, innovation, and competitiveness. The more diverse your staffing, the more unique ideas and perspectives you'll be able to bring to any given problem, including neurodiversity.

●   Neurodiverse people are an untapped, eagerly available pool of talent. With eighty percent of Autistic people unemployed in Ireland, there is a huge resource to help fill the skills shortage gap, particularly in the IT and finance sectors.

●   Diverse organizations have been shown to outthink and outperform heterogeneous spaces.

●   People with dyslexia frequently have average or above-average intelligence and exceptionally creative thinking abilities. They have strong problem-solving and spatial reasoning skills. This enables them to see a wide range of solutions to a problem.

●   People with Autism Spectrum Disorder tend to excel at rule-based thinking. Many organizations are reaping the benefits of including people with these skills in their workforces.

Final Thoughts

Workplaces with neurodivergent employees can reap numerous benefits. They bring fresh perspectives that contribute to task and project success. Nevertheless, some employees may require additional support in the workplace to help them overcome associated challenges.
