Taking Control
Today, work is no longer a place rather it is a state of mind. In the past we used to have three distinct segments of time – work, home and leisure. Now it is one constantly morphing pie.
If we can stop applying the work-home-leisure framework to our lives and start instead of apply a framework based on values, we shift to time being more fluid working in our favour and not making us feel stressed and exhausted.
So where do you start?
- Determine your true values – decide what is most important to you. Ask yourself – “what do I really want to do with my life?”
- Decide exactly what you want – make a list of say 10 goals that you would like to accomplish over the coming year. Then identify your most important goal and organise your list by priority.
- Put your relationships first – put the most important people in your life at the top.
- Take care of your physical health – you can simplify your life by eating less, eating better, exercising regularly and sleeping more.
If everyone has the same number of hours in a day, why do some people seem to get so much more done than others? The answer is they make getting to the heart of things their core approach. They go small – that is they start with one thing!!
The question of balance is a really a question of priority.
If we can stop judging our time according to outdated definitions of work, home and leisure, we are less likely to feel stressed out. If we stop forcing the separation between these three areas of our lives we won’t suffer when they merge – instead we will find solutions.
Time is the currency of productivity and how you handle it will ultimately determine your success or failure.
This is a great article. Life sometimes forces you to review priorities especially when things happen to your family members and/or friends.
Totally agree Babette, its a mindset that needs to change and be updated, work home leisure are all important and the traditional separation of these concepts is outdated.
