Reaching Women in Perimenopause on her terms

For people like me who talk about peri/menopause day in and day out, it’s a no-brainer. However, ‘perimenopause’, the "menopausal transition," is a complex and confusing stage in a woman's life. As estrogen levels fluctuate, women can experience a range of physical and emotional symptoms that vary widely in intensity and duration. However, despite its prevalence, perimenopause remains a relatively misunderstood and under-discussed topic. That means not only do women lack information but so do many healthcare practitioners. In fact, some women report that their OB-GYN’s have stated that perimenopause is a ‘myth’ and dismiss their concerns.

This lack of awareness is a massive hurdle for brands trying to use SEO to connect with women going through this major life shift.

Women don’t know what they don’t know.

One of the major hurdles in creating content for perimenopausal women is the misconception that menopause only occurs in later years. The reality is that perimenopause can begin in a woman's 30s, catching many off guard. This early onset leads to a lack of recognition and understanding of the symptoms, causing women to attribute them to other factors or to simply ignore them. Brands trying to share useful info have a tough job breaking through this ignorance and getting the attention of women who don't think they need the info yet.

Symptom Misattribution:

Perimenopausal symptoms can manifest in various ways, including mood swings, irregular periods, hot flashes, and sleep disturbances. However, these symptoms don’t always scream ‘perimenopause’ right away. This can lead to a disconnect between the experiences of women and their understanding of the underlying cause. This disconnect between what women experience and what they think is causing it makes it tricky for brands to create SEO-friendly content. They've got to bridge the gap and let women know that their symptoms might be linked to this specific life stage.

Menopause vs. Perimenopause:

Article content

The term "menopause" is more widely recognized (and often improperly used) than "perimenopause," and this creates a tendency for women to focus on the endgame rather than the transitional phase. They associate menopause with the end of periods and getting 'old,' completely missing the nuances of perimenopause. So, as content strategists, we've got to tackle this misconception and cleverly use both terms in our SEO game to grab the attention of women seeking answers.

As a content strategist, we need to navigate this misconception and strategically incorporate both terms into SEO strategies to capture the attention of women seeking answers.

Clueless Searches

Women dealing with perimenopausal symptoms might not even know how to ask Google for help. They could be juggling a bunch of other life issues, making it hard for them to pinpoint what's going on. This lack of awareness results in vague or unrelated search terms, making it a headache for brands trying to optimize their content. So, as content creators, we've got to predict what these women need to know, guide them with useful content, and optimize for questions they might not even realize they should be asking. It's like they say, "women don't know what they don't know," so we've got to help them discover what's out there.

As Content strategists and creators, we need to anticipate and address the informational needs of this audience by guiding them with informative content and optimizing for the questions women may not know how to ask.

What's a brand to do?

Perimenopause is like a riddle wrapped in a mystery for both women and brands. Women are in the dark about this stage, and brands are struggling to break through. To tackle the SEO challenge of reaching women in perimenopause, we need a savvy approach that recognizes the hurdles of ignorance and misinformation. Crafting content that educates, empathizes, and speaks to the unique experiences of women in perimenopause is the key. With a bit of awareness, understanding, and a smart SEO strategy, we can create a supportive online space for this underserved group during this crucial life stage.
