Paul Tucker and I discuss inflation at a BSCC-sponsored event in Zurich
The evening of Thu, 8 September, the British-Swiss Chamber of Commerce (BSCC) and Swiss Re co-hosted an event in Zurich entitled The current global financial landscape. At this event, Sir Paul Tucker -- a Research Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School since 2013, Deputy Governor of the Bank of England from 2009 to 2013, and author of the book Unelected Power: The Quest for Legitimacy in Central Banking and the Regulatory State (Princeton University Press, 2018) -- and I held a wide-ranging discussion on inflation -- including its main drivers and its near-term outlook, as well as the role of central banks in containing inflation. The discussion was expertly moderated by Stefan Gerlach, chief economist at EFG Bank and a former central banker himself.
My sincere thanks go out to members and staff of the BSCC -- especially Dame Inga Beale, Charlotte Gannon, Adrian Marriott, and Simon Sudbury -- as well to Guido Fürer, Group Chief Investment Officer and member of the Group Executive Committee at Swiss Re, and Urs Leimbacher, Head of Public Affairs & Cultural Engagements at Swiss Re, for their expertise and excellent collaboration in organizing this event.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the discussion Paul and I were engaged in came to a sudden end after the sad news of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II earlier that same evening spread rapidly among members of the audience. The audience dispersed after a brief moment of silence in her honor. May she rest in peace.
