KDD 2017 – Applied Data Science Invited Talks
Tuesday August 15th, 10:00AM - Room 200D Halifax World Trade and Convention Centre.
At this year’s KDD we have organized the invited talks of the Applied Data Science Track into three exciting sessions.
The first session brings together speakers that have spent the last few years analyzing data from three very important fields.
Professor Andy Berglund has been working with genomic data. Analysis of that data is leading to dramatically improved understanding of adult muscular dystrophy. In the process of tackling this problem his team has also been developing novel data capture, data management and data analysis capabilities.
Dr. Paritosh Desai and his team have been analyzing data from an industry that is undergoing significant changes with parts of it being disrupted because of changing demographics, buying habits, payment methods, and other characteristics. His talk will describe how they are able to drive business in such a fluid environment.
The session will conclude with a fireside chat during which Mohak Shah will talk about the challenges and opportunities offered by the use of AI, including large scale analytics, in automotive and industrial applications being developed and used globally by a conglomerate like Robert Bosch AG.
Andy Berglund is a Preeminence Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the College of Medicine at the University of Florida. He is the Director of Informatics and Sequencing in the Center for NeuroGenetics. Before joining the faculty at Florida, Andy was a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Oregon, Associate Dean of Graduate Education and Co-Director of the Bioinformatics Graduate Internship Program. Andy holds a BA in Biochemistry from the University of Colorado and a PhD in Biochemistry from Brandeis University.
Paritosh Desai is the Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Target. He oversees the work of the Enterprise Data, Analytics & Business Intelligence (EDABI) team, while owning responsibility for enterprise data management and governance. His team develops the technology that powers personalization, IoT applications, fraud detection, supply chain optimization and demand forecasting. Paritosh joined Target in 2013, with a background in designing and delivering data science based decision support systems using various advanced data science algorithms and web-scale technologies, primarily for the retail industry. He previously served as Senior Director of Data Science at Gap Inc., He has also held senior roles at IBM-owned retail analytics firm, DemandTec. Paritosh holds a Ph.D. in Operations Research from Stanford University.
Mohak Shah is the Head of Data Science at Robert Bosch AG. He has over 15 years of experience as an analytics leader in organization formation, strategy, and end-to-end data science engagements. He has led analytics and IoT engagements in domains including automotive, aviation, energy and healthcare managing diverse teams from research, software and businesses. He was the General Chair of the ACM SIGKDD 2016 conference and holds an Adjunct position with the University of Illinois at Chicago. He regularly participates in scientific, business, and investment communities as an expert speaker, advisor and consultant. He is the author of “Evaluating Learning Algorithms: A Classification Perspective” (Cambridge), and has published more than 45 research articles, in top conferences and journals in the analytics space, and patented technologies.
