It's Time to Dissent
We are taught to follow the blueprint. The prescribed path: climb the ladder, hit the milestones, and display the markers of success. But this rigid framework is exhausting. It stifles authentic growth, discourages vulnerability, and ignores the complex, multifaceted journeys we are all on.
We’ve created a culture—especially for men—where value is a binary: you have “made it,” or you have not. This is a lie, and it’s costing us our well-being, our creativity, and our sense of self.
It’s time we champion a new narrative.
The Tyranny of the "Blueprint"
From the classroom to the boardroom, we are conditioned to seek external validation. We chase quick wins, flaunt entitlements, and measure our worth by titles and accolades. This system isn't just broken; it's counterproductive. It asks us to silence our inner voice in favor of the world’s noise, leading to burnout, inauthenticity, and a profound sense of emptiness.
True success isn’t found in keeping up, but in waking up. And waking up begins with a quiet, yet powerful, act: I dissent.
Dissent is Your Most Strategic Career Move
Dissent isn’t just a political act. It is a daily, practical choice to reject the autopilot of modern life and choose a different, more intentional path. It is the foundation of genuine strategy over mere noise.
Here’s what that dissent looks like in action:
- In Your Attention: Scrolling vs. Creating. While millions doomscroll, the dissenter puts the phone down to read, build, or connect deeply. This isn’t anti-technology; it’s pro-attention. In an economy of distraction, owning your focus is a radical and successful act.
- In Your Health: Processed Convenience vs. Ancestral Wisdom. We’ve traded the rich, whole-food culinary heritage of Africa and the diaspora for Westernized, processed convenience. The result is an preventable epidemic of diabetes and hypertension. The true rebellion? Returning to the natural, nourishing foods of our grandparents. It’s a dissent for the sake of our very sovereignty.
- In Your Lifestyle: Hyper-Individualism vs. Communal Wealth. We were sold a distorted dream that equates "modern" with "Western," urging us to abandon communal cultures for hyper-individualism. We then find ourselves in a society of lonely consumers. The dissenter realizes that the "unpopular" path back to cultural pride, purpose, and community is the true key to a wealthy life.

A New Framework for Value: The Three P's
To build workplaces and networks where a person’s value isn't a binary, we must shift what we champion. Let's value:
- ✅ The Process, not just the pinnacle. Mastery is in the daily discipline, the learning, and the grind. The journey is the destination.
- ✅ The Person, not just the producer. We are human beings, not human doings. Value character, empathy, and integrity as much as you value output.
- ✅ The Pivot, not just the linear path. Growth is not a straight line. The courage to change direction, to adapt and unlearn, is a sign of strength, not failure.
Let’s build ecosystems where a man's value is found in his character, his resilience, and his continuous journey of learning—not just his last win.
The Final Word
As I’ve reflected on this, I keep coming back to a simple truth:
"The unwritten lesson about dissent is that it is often the quiet, unpopular path that leads to a truly successful life. It is the courage to unlearn the world's noise and return to your own ancestral rhythm."
This is the core of it. Success isn't about the noise you make, but the truth you live.
What are your thoughts? Have you seen or experienced the need for this shift? Where have you chosen to "dissent" in your own journey?

Powerful piece
This reflection really resonates. The idea that “dissent” can be an intentional act of clarity, as opposed to rebellion, feels both timely and necessary. We’ve normalized chasing external markers of success while losing sight of inner alignment and cultural grounding. Choosing authenticity over autopilot isn’t easy, but it’s where real growth and fulfillment begin. Thank you for articulating this so powerfully, David Otieno
