INTRODUCING JOHNATHON COREY
Tell us a little bit about Yourself.
My name is Johnathon Corey, I moved from Glencoe to Windsor when I was starting High-School. I have many plants and my collection is growing. I really have a strong passion for Graphic Design.
What steps did you take to land this internship?
I was selected to come in for an interview for David Jacob Duke [Creative Design Studio], Moon Jump, and The Branding Loft. I was excited about this opportunity, and the first thing I did was start researching each of the companies. Normally internships are with only one company, but this was a chance to work with three, each with their own expertise. They all do different things that I enjoy and that fact I get to learn from them makes me happy and will improve my design skills. Not long after the interview I received confirmation in an email that I was selected and I accepted the internship.
What advice do you have for someone who is just starting to look for an internship?
Research, as much as you can about the agency. Knowing the work that they have done in the past, and the quality that they produce for their clients will ensure if they hold the same values you aspire to. Look up who works there and absorb all they have accomplished to get to where they are now. Research will make it or break it for where you want to intern. Also, trust your gut and look at the internship that will offer you the most in improving your design, offering more, and just the work load itself.
Knowing what you know now that you have finished school, what would you have done differently?
Nothing at all, I have enjoyed the steps I have taken and the education that I received at St. Clair College!
What specifically motivated you to become a Graphic Designer?
Every Christmas since I was little kid I would get a Crayola drawing board. I would draw little scenes on the paper and continue on for hours. In High-School I was in the Year Book Club, so I had gained a bit of production and layout skills that I came to enjoy. My art teacher at the time advised me that I should take the graphic design class she was going to teach the next semester. She expressed that I would have a good time, which I did. While I was in her class and she told me that I should apply to Graphic Design program at St. Clair College. Which I did of course, and since I was accepted I have enjoyed it ever since.
Do you have any inspiring heroes in the industry (past or present)?
Not that I can think of, I’m sure in the future there will be a few. I admire a lot of designers and artists work, which I break apart and study asking myself why did they do this, and how did they achieve it.
What industry trend has really peaked your personal interests and why?
Simplicity, the clean minimalistic look. Everything looks organized it’s just amazing.
John, will be interning for the next six weeks with the Branding Loft, Moon Jump Productions, and David Jacob Duke [Creative Design Studio]. We look forward to watching his skills develop and what creative solutions he will unveil!
