Igniting Creativity: Insights from Teaching Aspiring Product Designers
Recently, i had the opportunity to embark on my first teaching experience with a group of blazing product designers, and it proved to be an invigorating experience. It was a 7-week program of distilling in packs how to solve a problem using the design thinking framework, understanding how to balance business goals and user needs, unpacking and analyzing data, distinguishing between market reality and market research and developing impactful designs.
In this article, i will share my reflections on the profound impact of teaching these aspiring designers and how it has molded me and shaped my creative process.
Creating an Engaging Environment
The Northstar lies in creating an engaging and inclusive environment. With the diverse perspectives and experiences of my students, i fostered an atmosphere that encourage active participation, collaboration and open-mindedness. Stimulated their creativity and critical thinking through group discussions, field research and real world case studies.
Instilling User-Centric Design Thinking
Through the entire program, i emphasized the significance of user-centric design thinking, introducing them to techniques such as empathy mapping, user journey, user flow, wire framing and prototyping. I guided my students to understand the importance of the needs of the users at the fore-front of their design process. Cited how critical research is in identifying user pain points and addressing the problem in their design process. This focus on human centered design empowered them to create products that truly resonate with their intended audience.
Nurturing Curiosity (Asking Questions)
One of the most striking aspects of teaching upcoming product designers was witnessing their curiosity and eagerness to explore new concepts. Encouraging this curiosity became a cornerstone of my teaching approach. I presented them with a wide range of resources to expand their horizons and inspire their imagination. By exposing them to diverse design techniques and encouraging them to ask questions, i facilitated their growth as holistic thinkers.
Embracing Mistakes and Iteration
The act of design is a process of continuous refinement and teaching aspiring designers taught me the importance of embracing mistakes mistakes and iteration. I encouraged my students to view mistakes as learning opportunities, thereby fostering a growth mindset that enabled them to improve. Through regular critiques and feedback sessions, we celebrated experimentation. This created a culture of continuous improvement.

Encouraging Collaboration
In the evolving landscape of design, collaboration have become increasingly crucial. Helen Keller said “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”. Recognizing this fact, i facilitated collaborative projects and encouraged cross disciplinary exploration. By working in diverse team comprising designers, marketers, engineers, lawyers, realtors, the students learned to leverage the power of collective intelligence. This prepared them for the collaborative nature of real -world design projects.
Final Thoughts
My experience teaching these designers proved to be a transformative journey for both my students and myself. Witnessing their growth and ethusiasm reaffirmed my belief and drive to shape the future of design. I look forward to guiding and inspiring next generation of designers, knowing that they have what it takes to define, build and create innovative solutions that will impact our world positively.
