How do one become more innovative?

Would you rather be filling in spreadsheets with data every day or be exploring new and exciting ideas?

Innovation is a muscle that we are all naturally equipped with. It can be learned, encouraged, and incented. We just need to get in the habit of using it.

What is innovation?

In short, creativity plus work results in innovation. Therefore, being innovative allows you to harness your creativity.

Below are some ways to be more innovative. Who knows? It might just be the spark you need to think of your next big idea today.

Involve others – Innovation is not for geniuses working alone. It requires the involvement of others, bringing together diverse expertise and perspectives. You will need feedback about your innovation. Pick someone you feel comfortable working with and make yourselves accountable to each other.

Jot down any ideas and thoughts – Do not discount ideas that excite you but seem a little crazy. There are no thoughts of limitations based on age, experience, environment etc. Jot down everything that comes to you including random words, phrases, or scenarios. You might be able to link these thoughts together to paint a picture of what your subconscious is trying to tell you. No matter how absurd an idea may seem, do not let your inhibitions get to you. Always believe that a crazy idea could become reality.

Override your fears – You need not be fearless, but do not be afraid to make mistakes. Take failure as a part of the learning process and persevere. See mistakes as opportunities to perfect your innovation.

Go outside – Step out of your comfort zone and seek out new experiences. Sticking to things you are used to limits your thinking process and perception. Challenge your self-perception and be open to meet new people.

Be curious – The most innovative people in the world are also the most inquisitive. They ask many questions and are always looking for ways to improve things. Blumenthal encourages all his employees to approach the world with a “beginner’s mindset” and look for ways to give themselves fresh perspectives.
