Hello middle management, meet AI...
This is a summary of my article published on Substack.
Middle management faces threats (paywall) from both Gen Z disinterest and AI automation of core functions.
As the next generation climbs the rungs of the corporate ladder, their career paths look markedly different from those of millennials and previous generations. Their perspectives on work-life balance, job security, and long-term career growth are reshaping workplace dynamics.
At the same time, AI is rapidly advancing, automating many of the traditional responsibilities of middle managers. The stereotypical “gatekeeping” and process-heavy functions of management are increasingly being replaced by intelligent systems.
Now if this managerial layer is to survive, there are two broad level evolution paths
1/ Equip managers with AI skills to enhance their capabilities,
2/ Create diverse, intergenerational teams that balance AI innovation with human oversight.
The future of management isn’t about resisting AI—it’s about integrating it while retaining the human elements to drive the change in the organisation fabric.

A treat to read, and so true! I feel Ai is such an integral part of my day to day life now, but the human oversight is still needed. Two specific recent observations I've had: - It's much easier to drop a 10mins voice note to Ai to give a brief and receive decent output than it is to brief the average middle management person (Ai "gets me" ) - Ai is great for brainstorming and inspiring me to go beyond the standard Having said that, still not something we can follow off a cliff any time soon.
