#FridayFails - Much Ado About Nothing

My alternative title for this week's story was "The Search Engine Optimization Approach to E-Mail Prospecting", but then I realize that this barely qualifies as a prospecting e-mail.

The example comes courtesy (as is often the case), of Dave Brock. Take a look

Subject: Consulting in Sales Execution | [company name] <<The good news is that Dave spends a lot of time worrying about sales execution. The bad news--these guys might be prospecting with someone who basically does the same thing (don't take that the wrong way Dave)--so its really offering competitive insights to Dave (not much to worry about, huh Dave) vs. value to their business.>>

Dear David Brock, <<Quite formal, this could be a cultural thing as the company is not U.S. based, so no real demerit points for this.>>

Greetings.

[companyname], has been providing consulting in Sales execution for niche real estate & high-value-tech product companies. <<Relevance to Dave?>>

Its involvement has been in the areas of Sales Organisation, Salesforce, Salesperson Success, Sales Design, Sales Operations, Sales Activities, Sales Planning, Sales Revenues, Sales Engagement, Sales Enablement & Sales Systems. <<Impersonal tone (company as the third person and just a bunch of SEO buzzwords>>

The assignments directly impact actual sales & its successful executionenhancing customer acquisition, sustaining revenue generation & energising salespersons. <<The bolding is theirs and this is just more stuff>>

This focussed approach in helping businesses to achieve their sales objectives, is executed across industry verticals. <<Still searching for what they are trying to communicate>>

Businesses of all sizes require to undertake sales with a detailed application of – Pricing, Positioning, Proposition, Opportunities, Engagement, Experience, Endorsements, Partnerships, Finalisation, Competition, Revenue Plan<<More buzzwords, bolded>>

The design of Sales success is in the details of executing it. Aligning Sales to shifting paradigms in the VUCA-environment is a big agenda for all companies. <<This feels like a different story>>

We connect with businesses of varied sizes with [idea they share via twitter] and through articles of interest to businesses-persons / sales professionals across sectors. <<relevance?>>

I will be happy to address your interest in this. Please let know your thoughts and will be great to connect with yourself, on the same. <<Where has Dave expressed any interest in this or what is it that Dave is supposed to be interested in?>>

Thanks and with regards – [contact info]

===End E-Mail

As I said, Dave doesn't have anything to worry about if a consulting firm in sales execution prospects in this manner. In fact, this isn't even prospecting. Its just ego-centric sharing of meaningless information without making any promise or ask.

Why even bother?

Nice idea, but not interested in the slippery slope to actually becoming a real.writer

LOL nothing like a good old Friday Fails article to cap off the week. These never fail to make me laugh, Hank. Have you ever considered consolidating all of your Friday Fails into an ebook of some sort? Title it “How to not write a cold email”.

What often baffles me is when a sales rep does their homework, in great length, to really identify and confirm relevancy and tie purpose/sample outcomes to specific goals/milestones etc - yet no response is received from the target person - fast forward a few days and a generic note is sent to the same person and they respond without any mention to the detailed (yet concise) note that was sent previously.

Hank, I wish I were smart enough to make this stuff up. Unfortunately, you and I have no end of real examples of tragic prospecting. In this case, he was trying to sell his services to us. We don't fit his target market niches, so why he sent this to me is curious. But even more curious, if he had done his homework, he would have realized that we provide similar services to our clients, so why is he trying to sell those services to me. It's amazing.......
