Finding Your Perfect Balance of Diversity
How can you help keep Dr. King's dream alive?
By Kelley Cornish, Head of Diversity and Inclusion
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all. His activism not only sparked the conscience of a generation, but encouraged all people to live up to the potential of America by fighting for social justice through peaceful means. He found a balance between stating "what is" and "what could be" through his inspiring speeches and marches. His dream of a truly just society has left an imprint on our lives, and in many ways has shaped our society.
As we reflect on Dr. King's legacy, the progress made, and the journey ahead, I look at my own path and apply the same values and principles that he fought so hard to establish.
As the Head of Diversity and Inclusion at TD, I take great pride in working for a company that cares deeply about fostering a diverse and inclusive culture. With deliberate intent, I keep Dr. King's dream alive through my own work at TD and encourage others to do the same every chance I get. And as we create a workplace inclusive of all walks of life, finding the "perfect" balance of diversity in the corporate sector is a huge task.
While everyone should be focused on bringing their best to the work environment, the reality is that we all have challenges that can keep us from creating a perfect workplace. At TD, we understand the reality of day-to-day work, and our mission is to cultivate a service-oriented, barrier-free culture that attracts, invests in, and promotes all talent, reflecting the diverse communities we serve.
We aim to see people for who they are, and help them become whomever they want to be without judgment or preconceived ideas. We believe the true essence of diversity and inclusion is providing a safe and productive environment where every individual feels comfortable bringing their whole selves to work. We take pride in creating a culture that celebrates the unique talents and contributions of each individual. And we recognize that by fostering an atmosphere of belonging, our colleagues will feel motivated to perform to their highest potential and inspired to help us be the better bank.
TD Bank's commitment to diversity and inclusion is not only core to who we are; it’s critical to our business success. As the human bank, it's imperative that we seek ways to better understand and respect one another, and reflect the brilliant diversity of the communities we proudly serve. That's our vision for a perfect balance of diversity at TD!
So as we celebrate Dr. King, I ask you to find your perfect balance. How can you be an agent of change and do your part to carry on his legacy? It's important for all of us to keep his dream alive and encourage one another to continue the fight for equality and justice.
Well said Kelley!
