Enter the Make It Temporary Architecture Contest by Autodesk

How do we build for the moment, and then unbuild responsibly?

Temporary structures continue to be relevant as cities navigate uncertainty and change - especially in light of major events like the Olympics and how they can be used to create adaptable infrastructure and minimize underutilized post-event infrastructure and environmental impact. Recent LA wildfires also underscore the urgency of temporary and adaptable infrastructure in offering a flexible solution for rapid deployment and relocation, if necessary, especially if designed for easy dismantling and reuse. Whether responding to climate emergencies or creating adaptable infrastructure for major events, the "Make It Temporary" contest calls on us to think about: how to build for the moment, and how to unbuild responsibly.

That’s why I’m thrilled to be on the Judges Panel for this design competition, calling on architecture students to envision temporary structures that serve an immediate need - then disappear with purpose. Think:

  • Emergency shelters for natural disasters
  • Portable science labs for research expeditions
  • Shade pavilions for heat relief

Share your design as a step-by-step Instructable, complete with your research, sketches, design process, site plans, models, and final renderings. There’s also a special judge’s prize for a stand-out physical architectural model.

I can't wait to see what you come up with!
