And the "So Passionate" plan was the cornerstone that paved the way. After an initial resume assessment, we laid the groundwork for change and crafted an optimized LinkedIn profile that breathed new life into her digital presence. The result? A triumphant leap into the consulting industry, where she’s exercising her passion on a daily basis for an industry leading company.
Elevate Your Resume: Stand Out from Hundreds of Applicants
Here's an unsettling fact: You may be going about the job hunt all wrong, and you may have been doing this your entire career. In fact, most people do. While it's common to focus your resume, LinkedIn profile, and other job-hunting materials on your day-to-day duties, the truth is that the emphasis should instead be on the actual impact that you’ve made while in your role.
For a typical publicly posted job opening today, you may be competing with over 250 other candidates depending on your market. If we're talking about a position at a top company in a major market, that number could be well over 500. And, if you're applying for a remote gig, the applicant pool could be even larger because you're competing with qualified people all over the region, the country and even the globe. How do you get your resume to stay out of the void and stand out from the crowd enough to get noticed?
The average resume is primarily task-oriented. In other words, it focuses on listing the applicant's duties and tasks at their previous or current job. Many resumes today are also forcibly short because candidates often fear going beyond one page, worrying that any resume over one page will be tossed aside. One of the best ways to make your resume stand out is to steer clear of a task-oriented mindset and focus more on what you’ve accomplished that sets you apart from others with the same role and similar responsibilities. Highlight your impact by listing concrete achievements, results you’ve attained, new programs you’ve initiated, successful projects you led or participated in, and so on. Now, not only does this highlight your actual skills and abilities, but it does this by showing recruiters how capable you are, not just telling them. Finally, don't sell yourself short literally by limiting your resume to one page. One-page resumes were the norm back when people were handing physical copies of their resumes to hiring managers. But now that most of the hiring is done digitally, there's no need to worry. In most circumstances, a two-page resume (or even three, if needed) is perfect because it gives you enough space to fully detail your qualifications without being so long that it overwhelms the recruiter.
In a world where job competition continues to intensify, it's essential to approach the job hunt with a fresh perspective. Shifting the emphasis from a task-oriented mindset to highlighting your big wins can be the game-changing strategy you've been searching for. The job market is dynamic, and strategies for success evolve over time. In the ever-changing landscape of professional recruitment, staying adaptable and informed is key. As you continue your career endeavors, stay tuned for more insights, tips, and guidance on navigating the world of job hunting.
