DR. IAN D. PEGGS “RETIRES”
Clients and Colleagues:
After 40+ years of geosynthetic materials performance consulting work Dr. Ian D. Peggs has made a strategic decision to close I-CORP INTERNATIONAL, Inc. for the foreseeable future and to retire. Dr. Peggs will continue his own R&D and technical support projects.
Dr. Peggs was awarded an honorary membership (one of only nine) in the International Geosynthetic Society at the 2018 Korean international conference in Seoul.
I-CORP and Dr. Peggs have worked for over 300 clients on geomembrane projects worldwide: east China to India, northern Canada to Australia, and Peru, zero ft to 14,800 ft!
His business philosophy has been to seek novel test methods, develop them for geosynthetics, and teach others how to use them. For instance, he started work on geoelectric liner integrity and leak location methods in about 1993 then, together with TRI, started an instruction/ certification course in 2004. He has done many failure investigations of whales and bottom liners of waste water plant ponds.
For his “disruptive” work on HDPE stress cracking one manufacturer called him “a loose cannon”, a description he relished!
He started geosynthetic work at Hanson Materials Engineering in Edmonton, Canada about 1983 and then formed a joint venture (Geosyntec) with Robert Wallace of EBA Engineering, also in Edmonton. Dr. Peggs moved to Florida in 1991 and was the 7th member of the Giroud/Fluet GeoServices consulting team, setting up the Geosyntec lab and investigating liner failures – mostly stress cracking. I-CORP followed in 1991, growing to 10 people, mostly CQA, then being reined back to two (Doug Hamilton) when Dr. Peggs was spending more time on administration work than materials performance. It has been I-CORP ever since. He also initiated www.geosynthetica.net, which was amazingly developed by his daughter-in-law Elizabeth.
The kinds of activities Dr. Peggs may still be involved with in “retirement” mode include the following:
· Remote field surveys controlled from the office
· Drone-assisted CQA
· Liner/pipe illustrated failure catalog. This has been tried before but no-one has made it work.
· Student mentoring
· Industry Resources
This “retirement” is the beginning of a new phase in my life. It has been a pleasure working with you all and your colleagues.
I wish you all a successful New Year.
Please keep me in the loop for all new developments so I can spread the word and remain current.

Ian Peggs Globally the industry thanks you for your dedication, time, persistence and technical insights, you are retiring from an industry that you helped mould and pioneer. On a personal note, everyone has learnt so much from you and believe various people will continue to do so for years to come, thank you Ian, hopefully the retirement will allow you some days off 😏. Enjoy the well deserved retirement.
Good luck with the next chapter of your life! Your contributions to this chapter are greatly appreciated.
Thanks for you immense contribution to our industry Ian. Personally, thanks for introducing me to electrical leak location surveys. I will always fondly remember how, at short notice over ten years ago, you agreed to come to SA to help us solve a mysterious leak. I wish you all the best.
I wish you the best Ian. Hope your retirement pursuits are fruitful and fulfilling for you. Take care and have a blessed life.
Congratulations Ian! I learned a lot from you on the few projects we ran into each other on.
