DockerCon Predictions 2018 (and results)

Update with results - I added the results inline. Overall a great event but there was something about the vibe that was just different this year. I think it's because of the gaining maturity of the market it doesn't have quite the "this is the future" feel of previous events.

----

OK so I’m at the airport about to head to DockerCon. I was thinking to myself - what is it going to be like this year? So I thought I would make a few predictions just for fun.

I’ve been going to DockerCon off and on for 4 years - in San Francisco, Barcelona, Netherlands, Seattle, and Austin (off the top of my head). Each year my favorite thing is seeing lots of friends in the ecosystem and catching up with people. I usually catch a talk or two and have a bunch of great meetings. I like to walk the floor and see demos from companies I’ve never heard of.

Here are my predictions:

  1. Lots of Kubernetes - The dreaded K word used to be downplayed at DockerCon but no more - they have fully embraced it!

Result: YES! Lots of Kubernetes from the community and on the keynote stage.

2. Ode to Solomon - this is the first DockerCon without Solomon and I have a feeling they will do something to honor him. Maybe he makes an appearance?

Result: Nope. Although he did send some nice tweets during and after!

3. Some sort of well intentioned but confusing announcement - Moby? Orca? Will they do it again?

Result: Not this time! All the announcements were clear.

4. At least 5 new container security solutions! There are never enough.

Result: I actually forgot to count :-(

5. Docker Enterprise focus - I am really hopeful we learn Docker’s new strategy to make money!

Result: Yes! Onboarding of a broader spectrum of users, the windows community, and focus on Docker Enterprise.

6. The Party will be Great! (but I will skip it)

Result: No comment.

7. EDIT 8:12AM: Forgot to mention SERVERLESS - and there will be lots of "DOCKERLESS" jokes too - none will be funny.

Result: Actually not so much.

Maybe you think these are obvious and lame predictions. I will check back on these at the end of the week (or as its happening!)

Come see me at the JFrog booth or the CNCF booth (Thursday 2-3PM) or just tweet at me. Selfies accepted!
