Confused What to Share on LinkedIn
Lately you have been thinking, I did make a profile on LinkedIn but what to post on LinkedIn? LinkedIn is a professional network with 400+ million members (1) and growing at a good pace. LinkedIn can be used for a lot of purposes, as the power of networking is there. You can use LinkedIn to get the dream job you always wanted. Believe it or not, but I got my first job through LinkedIn. Later on after a few years, again I applied through LinkedIn and received a job offer. And both the job offers, I learnt a lot so LinkedIn does work if you are serious about getting a job through LinkedIn.
You need to be active in order to get the most out of LinkedIn. I have seen a lot of posts as well, including pictures, which make no sense or relation with the idea of professional networking. So I thought, why not share my thoughts on what can you share on LinkedIn? Before you do that, if you have an incomplete profile, or a cat picture instead of your own picture; I suggest changing that, as that will make you lose credibility.
A few things that I normally suggest sharing include
- Videos: They can be on your own website, YouTube, or Vimeo; but they should teach something, or be related to what you would like to share with people. I like music, but does that mean I share music on there? Well if you are in the Music industry, and want to discuss your thoughts about marketing of a particular music video, etc. and your network is only music industry professionals. So as far as you want to “add value” to your network, or have a question about.
- Quotations: Quotations can be a good source of motivation and inspiration for everyone, I personally read them a lot, but if you are using a photo from another source-cite them.
- Articles: I read an article, which was amazing; can be from CNN, Mashable, Tech Crunch, or any other big authority website. Feel free to share them across with your LinkedIn network by adding your thoughts and asking for thoughts from people. The idea is not only starting to make lots of post, but getting people interested in your posts. If you write your own blog, and believe that it will be great for the people on LinkedIn, share it across
- Events: Want to network with people with a direct meeting, share events that you will be attending.
- Jobs from your company: You work in a company, and the HR manager emailed the staff about the new opening that is available at your company. Generally, it is good practice to post the job to LinkedIn as it will give a higher reach and possibly more candidates to apply for the opening.
- Ask a question: You can post questions to engage people in your audience. The question needs to be engaging rather than asking “what did you eat in lunch?”. Remember we are posting on the World’s Largest Professional Network.
- Advice: Not everyone is highly experienced, there are over 40 million students and recent college graduates on LinkedIn (1). Share your experience and advice with them. The idea is to help.
