ConceptBytes: The "Shiny New Object" Syndrome - Why Your Tech Strategy Needs a Reality Check
Have you ever been in a meeting where everyone's throwing around the latest tech buzzwords – "Web 3.0," "Metaverse," “real time, “AI”,” "Agentic AI" – promising to change the game for businesses, but no one can actually explain how they'll solve your business problems? You're not alone!
In today's tech-obsessed world, it's easy to get caught up in the hype cycle and lose sight of what truly matters.
We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run. - Roy Amara
New Name, Same Old Game?
We all love new things, right? So, when we hear a new tech term, it's easy to get carried away. But sometimes, these new terms are just old wine in a new bottle. Remember those "expert systems" from years ago? Now they're back with a fancy new name – "agentic AI". Sure, they've got some new tricks thanks to machine learning, but deep down, they're tackling the same problems.
Don't Jump on the Bandwagon Blindly
Using new technology without understanding it properly can be a big mistake. Many companies are rushing to use AI without a clear plan. This can waste money and time, and you might not get the results you hoped for.
It gets worse when different teams in a company aren't talking to each other.
This puts a lot of pressure on the engineering teams. They have to rush to build things without proper planning to meet commitment made without consulting with engineering, which can lead to problems, quality issues and delays.
The Chaos of Misalignment
When different teams aren't on the same page about technology, things can quickly spiral out of control:
- Wasted Time and Money: Imagine your sales team promises a client a feature powered by the latest AI, but your architects & engineers haven't even consulted & explored that technology. Suddenly, they're scrambling to learn and implement something new, potentially delaying other projects and blowing the budget.
- Missed Opportunities: While your team is busy chasing the latest trend, your competitors might be focusing on technologies that actually address customer needs and bring in real business value. You could miss out on key opportunities because you're distracted by the hype.
- Frustration and Burnout: Imagine being an engineer constantly told to drop everything and implement the "next big thing" without a clear plan or understanding of why. This leads to frustration, burnout, and a feeling that their expertise isn't valued.

Ultimately, misalignment creates a chaotic environment where everyone is pulling in different directions. This not only hinders innovation but can also damage morale and productivity. Teams draining their energy.
Think Before You Leap
To navigate the ever-evolving tech landscape, we must adopt a critical mindset and ask ourselves the following questions:
- Does this technology actually solve a problem we have?
- Will it really benefit our business and our customers?
- Are there any risks involved?
- Is this a long-term solution, or just a passing trend?
Rather than blindly chasing the latest buzzwords, we should focus on building a strong foundation of digital literacy and critical thinking. This will enable us to make informed decisions about technology adoption and avoid falling victim to marketing hype.
To avoid getting caught up in hype and making the most of new technologies, here's how we can work better together:
- Strategy First: Business and product teams should define the "WHAT" (what problems are we trying to solve for our customers?) and the "WHY" (why is this important for our business?). This sets a strategic direction for everyone.
- Empower Architects: Once the strategic direction is set, empower architects to create the technical strategy and vision. This ensures the technical solutions align with the overall business goals and provides a roadmap for the engineering team. Let Architects figure out the "HOW" (how to build the solutions) along with engineers. Trust their expertise and give them the space to find the best technical approach within the defined technical strategy.
- Set Clear Goals: Define clear goals and expectations for each project. Don't dictate the solution; let engineers use their skills to find the best way to achieve those goals.
- Focus on Value: Prioritize projects that deliver the most value to the business and your customers. Don't get distracted by shiny new things that don't solve real problems.
- Do Your Homework: Before jumping on any new technology bandwagon, do your research. Understand the benefits, risks, and costs involved.
By focusing on teamwork and smart decision-making, we can use technology to grow our businesses in a sustainable way. Let's not get fooled by fancy jargon – let's focus on what truly matters!
