A career is the work or occupation a person does with opportunities for progress. It is the sequence of jobs that an individual has held throughout his or her working life. “Career Planning” therefore embraces a person’s entire life - the spiritual, social, educational, and vocational. It also includes the skills of a person employs in finding and keeping the job that is right for him or her. It’s been often said that the greatest enemy of action is the lack of a plan. So proper planning with a good amount of preparation will help you choose a right career.  

One should follow these guidelines while choosing a career :-

1.     Self-evaluation :-

Before you choose your right career, you must learn about your strengths and your interests. Your values, interests, soft skills and aptitudes, in combination with your personality type. It will be very beneficial to clearly understand what you are interested in.

2.     Research your options :-

Gathering concrete information from different sources will help take better decision towards your career planning.

3.     Interpersonal skills :-

This will help you to connect with people who have been there. It will help in getting insights into industry trends or learning about required training, internship or education for career success.

4.     Get experience :-

Experience is defined as the process of getting knowledge or skill from doing, seeing, or feeling things. Learning by doing is a valuable way to research possible career paths.

5.     Make decisions :-

Selecting a career involves obtaining appropriate information and being aware of the various factors that may influence your decision. A practical and proper decision will ultimately lead you towards a bright future.

These are few tips for successful career planning :-

  • Begin with your values.
  • Identify your interest and skills.
  • Identify your priorities.
  • Inculcate self-awareness.
  • Aim for gaining experience first, secondly for money.
  • Become 100% committed to your responsibilities.
  • Be willing to change and adapt i.e. be flexible.
