Inside Amazon’s MK30 drone safety testing process
Last December, we launched our new MK30 delivery drone for commercial service in the West Valley of Arizona’s Phoenix metro area. Because innovations require new ways of showcasing their safeguards and efficacy, as we created the MK30, we also created a way of testing the drone. It’s a process that requires a blend of creativity and rigor—and, in this case, running more than 5,000 test flights to identify and eliminate potential weaknesses before takeoff.
Along the way, our engineers re-created hazards like motor issues, computer glitches, and midair obstacles to push the drone to its limits. The team flew helicopters and planes into the drone’s path to test its detect-and-avoid capabilities. Real-world trials in Phoenix, which experiences more dust, also provided valuable learnings and led to precautionary upgrades. At Amazon, we continue to learn, study, and evolve our testing process to keep our drones safe in the skies.

CEO Andy Jassy shares 3 reasons he’s still at Amazon after 28 years
In Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s annual letter to shareholders, Jassy revealed that he once thought it “unfathomable” that his father worked at the same place for 45 years.
Jassy says when he first started working, he would tell his friends, “That would never be me.” But now, with almost 28 years and counting under his belt at Amazon, he has an answer to those asking why he’s still with the same company after nearly three decades:
I’m obviously a Superfan, but there are several compelling parts to working at Amazon. First, I’m not sure that any company prioritizes customers as relentlessly as we do. Lots of companies say they will; few follow through.
